There's no way we are signing an injury prone chilwell to cover an injury prone Shaw...

I've no issue signing berge as the Amrabat replacement and reckon we could still see Ugarte come in on loan. Berge had to be one of 2 cms bright in, he's not the answer on his own

    So what?

Their squads didn't need a third of the work ours did?

I don’t think people are necessarily stressing but more so hoping that things do get done sooner rather than later, for the best chance of a strong start, which we all want.

Saying that the three standout teams who were in a league of their own last season, haven’t made much movement isn’t going to appease that. Those teams don’t need much work, United needed/need a makeover heading into this season if they want to be back in the top 4.

I’m not going to get too stressed about it as obviously it’s not something we have control over as fans - all we can do is wait to see what happens.

Any Ugarte deal now needs to come from PSG's desperation to move him. Supposedly we valued him at 40m, I'd either offer a total maximum of 35m if PSG come skulking back to be rid or just leave them stuck with him. No more soft touch.

I'd take Berge over Amrabat who we know offers nothing.

    Indeed.

The team that finished 4th, the team that on paper we will need to overhaul to get CL football… have done this:

    https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/aston-villa/transfers/verein/405

    8 signings, 160+million spent.

Including Onana, who'd have been a great purchase for us (imo). Maatsen too, argubaly, given our LB issues (i don't think singing a LB is realistic tbh).

Liverpool need a good few players to push on as their squad is ageing, Arsenal need a proper striker and City need to replace Alvarez, look at Spurs and Newcastle too, nobody is doing mental business yet, we are being priced out of deals what do you expect INEOS to do? Pull transfers out of their arses? We've moved onto Berge so whats the panic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,792 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Regardless of transfers we're gonna start slow, most of our 1st team is only back now/injured so I hope you guys are ready for the usual first 5 game shite.

Seen on Reddit that psg are exploring signing Sancho. I hope we hardball them a bit

I’m aware. I said it before pre-season that it’s going to be disjointed at the start but at the same time, having the players in earlier allows them to gel with less games played than if they were to arrive in the last few days of the window. Zirkzee hasn’t played yet but he’s working with some of the players already and building relationships, that should stand to us at the start of the season for example.

That’s obviously best case scenario stuff and was always unlikely, especially with this new approach of not getting bent over on every deal in and out. So of course we know that there has to be a balance of paying the right amount even if it takes longer or moving on if needs be. I just hope that they do get the top choices on the list and not someone 5th down the line, if financially viable. Even if it means final days of the window movement.

I definitely don’t think the finger should be pointed at anyone until the window is closed.

Ratcliffe has said it wont be an over night fix, we aren't going to be challenging next season and probably the season after, PSR has us trying to sell first before we can sign anyone anyway.

I don't see how some posters think it's been a good summer so far on transfers. We still have plenty of deadwood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

But coming out of this summer with a squad that can't compete for the CL (or just missing the CL at the end of the season) will push any title aspirations further away. We need to be making top 4, we need to be making signings that can deliver top 4 - otherwise the ambitions or execution is all wrong.

We've Gotten rid of 2 permacrocks on huge money, donny we got a few quid for as well as a young fella and Greenwood with big sell on clauses. We'd all love to have signed another 2 or 3 guaranteed first teamers but we have a bloated squad of players on big bucks that are garnering little interest.

This in INEOS first summer in charge and they have already been more proactive in resetting the squad than the Glazers were in the last 10 years.

This is a marathon not a sprint but there are people in here already setting themselves up for the "I told you so" when we hit a bad run. It's tiresome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Then INEOS will have failed this summer and season. It is that simple. Top 4 has to be the aim, and not meeting it is failure. You can argue 5th place maybe. our an EL win. But anything less than CL qualification has to be deemed a failure.

You comment on Ratcliffe saying it won't be a quick fix. He also said making the CL is massively important.

You imply making top 4 is unrealistic. What do you think IS realistic?

Whatever about not overhauling City, Arsenal and Liverpool, at what point in the following list of clubs is it unrealistic to be aim to be better than - Villa, Newcastle, Spurs, Chelsea. And then… why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,792 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I think a lot of fans (myself to a degree) are just used to being let down. I've always said I'll judge INEOS the day after the window closes. I fully expect a rocky season with hopefully some improvements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

What's slightly concerning about Berge is that, up to now, he hasnt been on anyone's radar. Now I get that INEOS might have been considering it and keeping it under wraps but for it now to just suddenly come up appears that INEOS had thought the Ugarte signing was an inevitability but PSG are now playing hardball and we're trying to find alternatives at short notice. The Window started well and we may well see lots of movement before the end of the transfer window but its stagnated horribly at the moment. Considering our needs, if this is really INEOS's strategy, its a high risk one. Players need time to bed in once they join a new club. Fulham is less than 2 weeks away. Oh well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,792 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Realistic is 5th or 6th with challenging for Europa, of course Ratcliffe said Champions League is important, every club wants to be there but City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Villa are better than us right now and we don't have the money unless we sell and clubs know this so are offering peanuts.

I want us challenging for the title but I'm patient and not deluded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

TBH, I just can see justification for saying Villa are that much better than us, going into the summer.

That Villa have improved as (imo) they have, especially with Onana, and gotten further from us is just a failure of United (and good work from Villa). For you to consider finishing above Villa as unrealistic, should be a damning indictment of the work United have done, or what you consider possible in the next 3 weeks.

That United couldn't look at Martinez, Konsa, Torres, Diego, Moreno, Kamara, Luiz, Ramsey, Diaby, Watkins, McGinn as a team that we could look to come out of the summer better than… like, c'mon. Good side, well managed, not unbeatable.

What are you on about, the players mentioned are all good players including a World Cup winner! I'm sick of doing this with you all the time Mitch, I've defended you loads but you just love a whinge! Nothing is ever good enough for you, you always find a negative to anything the club does seriously it's old and boring at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,902 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Granted its a marathon not a sprint but that doesnt mean you have to show up to the start line in slippers and pajamas. We arent ready for the season to start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Defended me loads? you're the first to put my comments down to just whinging or an agenda. Every time.

Like this time for example. I say 4th has to be the aim. You say it is unrealistic. I ask why and the answer is it is unrealistic to think we could finish ahead of Aston Villa, and then I am not allowed to argue that?

    Yes they are good players.

So are: Onana, Dalot, Martinez, Mainoo, Garnacho, Rashford, Bruno, Hojlund, Zirkzee, Yoro. There is a world cup winner in there too!

' the player mentioned are all good players' Ok, yeah. As i said: 'Good players, well manager. not unbeatable'. but this merits 'What are you on about". FFS.

I'm sick of your holier than thou attitude tbh.

It was a disaster not making top 4 last season with the money spent to improve a squad that finished 3rd.

To have expectations below that this season is a sham.

But probably realistic. It is what it is I guess...

Whenever I see "World Cup Winner" cited as an achievement/indicator of success I'm reminded of the legendary #Pogback era.

That's me defending you last week, I have apologised to you before when I got you wrong about the Womens team, I've mentioned that you have good insight into the youth teams and have agreed with you many other times but funny how you only remember my negative posts……

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,182 ✭✭✭NITRO95

To get us back on track, I'm not saying he's the answer to all of our problems but I'd like to see us in for Matt O'Reilly. He'd cost less than £20m and IMO he's a guy I can see at a top 4 team 2 years from now. Offer Celtic Collyer on loan for the season to fill the void on their end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,792 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

In other news Bayern have agreed a 25+5 deal for Tah but need to sell De Ligt to finance it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,792 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I've actually flip flopped on this so many times, I watched him a lot last season and he looks a good player but so did Eduoard who hasn't done great at Palace, the SPL can be so hit or miss.

This makes no sense what so ever. One persons opinion is not a "damning indictment of the work United have done". I'm quite happy with the summer so far. Utd have signed one of the most exciting young players in the world, as well as last seasons young player of the year from Serie A. They've show already that they won't be forced to pay crazy transfer fees and a willingness to walk away from deals. They've also show more creativity doing deals than the Glazers/Woodward/Arnold ever did (eg. Greenwood sell on clause, re-negotiating release clauses). So because I'm impressed with the change in Utds transfer operations compared to the Glazer years, using your logic, wouldn't my positive assessment then be a strong endorsement of the work United have done?
