Michael Blake names his team. They should have a chance of a medal.

Is there any guide/magazine being produced providing an overview of the upcoming Olympics?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 523 ✭✭✭Happyhouse22

    getting close now!

    Any predictions?

Think Ireland can get to four gold medals for the first time ever

The numbers should be higher than the 2020 Olympics where Ireland took 2 gold medals. Four is very much a possibility this time.

Wiffen definitely has a chance of two.

The mens lightweight pair are big favourites to defend their title.

Harrington could defend her title . Maybe one the other boxers could sneak a gold, Aoife O’Rourke?

    Rhys McClenaghan could win.

Adeleke probably can’t win gold but could medal, could the 4x400 mixed sneak a bronze?

Golf and Show jumping all on the day but we have potential for a few medals there (and why not gold)

Men’s rugby sevens have a chance but would be a surprise really.

    Any other chances?

There's a good documentary series on RTE at the moment about some of the competitors in the lead up to the Olympics. Three episodes so far. They should be on the player.

All gets underway tomorrow with football and Rugby sevens. Ireland in action v south Africa (3.30) and Japan (20.00) in the men's sevens. Outside shout for a medal there and we will know if that's still a possibility this time tomorrow night

Hopefully the rugby team can get Ireland off to a good start today!

Good win for mens 7s. 10-5 south Africans got score with last play of game but our 2nd score 2 minutes from end had sealed win for us. Great start

Fantastic start.Japan up next at 8

Great start, but a bit of a stinker of a tournament draw unfortunately as seems to be the norm for Irish teams.

Should hopefully take care of Japan later, but we'll almost certainly need to beat one of New Zealand or the winners of France v Fiji, arguably the three medal favourites, to avoid being already knocked out of the medal matches before the opening ceremony even takes place.

Crazy carry on in the soccer Argentina equalise 15 mins into injury time v morocco.

Over an HOUR later var disallows the goal and they all have to come back on the field and play for another 3 mins. Full time 2-1 to Morocco

Just saw this, possibly one of the maddest things I've seen in a football match.

As a more general point, the crowd trouble with the Moroccan supporters probably shows why football shouldn't really be part of the Olympics. Particularly this nonsense Under 23 football tournament they play on the men's side.

If we lose/draw/win v NZ are we still playing either fra/fiji

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,056 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Can someone explain why all the Irish PLAYING gear seems to be McKvr and all their LEISURE wear seems to be Adidas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,282 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Lose or draw and and it's against the winner of France v Fiji.

Win v NZ and we play the eighth ranked team. Which sounds good but is likely to be a rematch with South Africa. So better, but still not great. We got a poor tournament draw again.

Will the 8th ranked team not be USA? They picked up 2 pts v Fra

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,282 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

As a result of that extra point they're more likely to be the 7th ranked team now.

Missed chance for Ireland there, should have scored again at 12-7 up and end up losing 14-12

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,282 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Awful. Will need to produce an all time sevens shock now against Fiji to progress to the medal matches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,802 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Major shock as SA knock out NZ in the QF

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,802 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Close but no cigar v Fiji lose 19-15

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,434 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Will we have one. The parade is a boat up the Seine.

Play it safe and give it to Wiffen

The draw for Irish boxers at the games

The boxing draw is a bit of a mixed bag I think, plenty of byes in there, meaning that seven of our 10 boxers will only need to win two fights to guarantee a medal. But the trade-off with the reduced sized fields is that there are very few handy draws going, nearly every boxer is a continental champion or a world medalist. On first viewing Clancy, Lehane and the Walsh siblings look to have particularly tough paths to win medals this time around.
