The English are a funny crowd when it comes to the "National Treasure" designation.

MM has achieved it in spades by being an octogenarian who presents as a naughty schoolgirl.

I bet that secretly she can't believe her luck.

IF you are semi famous in the uk you become a national treasure if you reach the age of 60 without being cancelled, MM basically gets interviewed because she is willing to say rude things about people she worked with years ago even if they are famous actors .she likes to be shocking and to use explicit language .A List actors tend to be polite and avoid criticising other actors as they may be working with them in the future .she,s probably never going to be offered a lead role in a movie or a drama so she has nothing to lose if she talks about how certain famous people she met are rude or boring.

Brendan furiously arse covering as usual “ there is no suggestion that this has happened in other organisations “…

I'm just struggling not to keep flinching every time the female political correspondent (Louise Burne) talk about the "political pardies…Solidaridy". Pretty common though. I genuinely struggle identifying the (younger) female political journalists apart from one another on radio.

Feel your pain bro, I’d advise you to stay away from the traffic reports too.

Some terrible stuff there, my friend.

Well ya, if he didn't and rte ended up getting in legal trouble people would be blasting him. What would you prefer?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,426 ✭✭✭Archduke Franz Ferdinand

well “ya” ld prefer if l didn’t have to listen to him at all on rte tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,494 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Anton savage is on newstalk if you want?

Brendan O'Connor gets 340k listeners according to the jnlrs, so he's doing something right I guess. He wouldn't be my choice either, but there you go...

The time slot and the hangover from the Marian days might help, Mr Dee.

I think O’Connor has settled into the role very well, and is an excellent broadcaster. He’s empathetic in one-on-one interviews, asks the right questions, and allows space for a substantive and revealing answer.
The paper review/panel isn’t quite as successful as under Marian F, but it’s still good.

I would disagree Bobson. The man is terrifed of another Rory O'Neill - Iona situation. He intrupts people speaking to make cavets about "both sides" or "other people not being here to defend themselves", etc. This is the exact opposite of allowing space for answers.

It ruins the flow of the show.

I also find the new Guest picks some meaningful songs segment a little odd. Why go to all the effort of having someone on the show, picking their songs and then only playing a short segment of each song.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,489 ✭✭✭Bobson Dugnutt

He does that because RTE has no money, people aren’t paying for public service broadcasting, and trips to the High Court are very very expensive. Can run into the hundreds of thousands. It’s unfortunate, but we have the libel laws we have.

I appreciate that is why he is doing it. But no one else does it. Show me an RTE presenter who interupts their guests as frequently as O'Connor. To point out "There are two sides" or "Well, you cannot say that. They are not here to defend themselves.". The show is borderline unlistenable at times.

The thing is, RTE never actually went to the High Court. They would always just settle. Had they gone to court and won. Some of the bodies claiming they had been defamed might be a little more reluctant to sue.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,300 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

I don't think Brendan is suited to the current affairs element of the show. He's good at entertainment and also personal interviews. Yes, RTE are too careful about avoiding a trip to court, but nobody over does the arse covering as much or as obviously as Brendan. I think Philip Boucher Hayes handled the panel discussions much better when filling in for this slot. The music interruptions really annoy me too (even Louis Walsh called him out on it!) but I always figured that was down to the producer or similar rather than Brendan.

Personally I'd rather listen to just about anyone than Anton Savage. I'd hate to see him working for RTE. His family has done enough damage.

The Callan's Kicks sketch nailed it -

    Referring to the Dublin riots-

Guest: 'Ah it was terrible Brendan, terrible…there was broken windows and…'

OC as BOC: 'Well we won't talk about that, there's no windows here to defend themselves'

As said above, PBH was in for a weekend not too long ago and it was a pleasure to listen to with none of the interrupting crap O'Connor does - and guess what, nobody got sued. Brendan seems to think his input to the conversations is way more valuable than any of his guests

€1560 per hour for that? - He has some agent to pull that stroke

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,775 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Ballsy is only following on from what went before him, even an easier gig in fact.

He only goes out in ‘open water’ for one hour on Sunday, the rest is all set up for him.

€1.5 large per hour for that is a fair auld wedge….but hey, it’s RTE .

The piece at the start of Saturdays show with Baz Ashmaway and Carl Mullen was quite good I thought. I wouldn't listen to either of them much in their own projects or whatever, but as a parent to 3 under 3, a lot of it resonated with me, and it was a good style of interview with all 3 asking questions

Jaysis Bobby Kerr. Is he still on air? I am sure he is a lovely man. But he has an ill suited voice for radio.

I think Brendan is good at the personal interviews

but yeh, the desert island discs bit but not actually playing all or most of the song - pointless.

Who is this talking about Charlie XCX?

    Sounds like her agent.

Total nonsense too. And made worse by the inflection on every sentence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

To be fair. It is not as if we can do much about how we look. You are born with a face and you are stuck with it. A few elocution lessons for Booby would be a solid investment.

It is more then half the job being a radio presenter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I must have missed this. What was the context? I wonder has she a gig lined up and the BOC show is laying on the Plamás in return for an interview.

If I remember correctly the Wim Butler from Arcade Fire got a lot of soft balls when Ballsey had him. This was around the time that Butler was being accused of sexual misconduct. Things got so heated at the time that their European Support act Feist quit the tour. Not that you would know any of that if you listened to the interview.

You can listen back and decide for yourself.

    https://www.rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22416994/

You remember incorrectly on the Win Butler interview.

That interview was broadcast a week before the allegations became public.

Incidentally almost two years later there have been no charges.

Popped in in the middle of the interview and it made little sense to me, although I am of an age!

Stand outs were being a brat, green and not showering for a few days.

Oh, and anti-Swift but not really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,637 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Oh I see, you were referring to Bobby Kerr.

I thought Booby was possibly a new nickname for BOC.

Fionnuala Jones, she’s on with Moncrieff on Newstalk a bit. She covers entertainment stuff.

    Think it was her anyway.

Who is the posh academic leftie pontificating on the show at the moment?

    Alan Barrett from ESRI.

Woman contributor (don't know her name) with excellent well-balanced points will not be asked back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,510 ✭✭✭Cole

Amazing stuff here. The 'woke, 'socially progressive', liberal academic is pushing the the far/hard right narrative (unintentionally?) and the 'middle aged white man' (Alan Barrett) is the only one calling out her. If other contributors were talking as she is, they'd be absolutely torn to shreds and explicitly called out as justifying some of the racist stuff that went on by the nutjobs in Coolock.

  • Registered Users Posts: 410 ✭✭strawdog

Ah I wouldn't agree with all she said but do like that she challenged the usual cosy d4 consensus that it's just some bad men stirring things up and not a genuine issue in the community. Its both of course but at least there was a bit more of a debate for once. I mean, Christ, Hanafin talking about how Blackrock is a beacon for us all to follow 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,510 ✭✭✭Cole

I agree with you there alright, but she only condemned the racism when pushed a bit. She was on PK during the week too…basically inferring that everyone involved in the protests are disenfranchised, victims etc. She also emphasised this morning that the immigrants (potentially) going to Coolock would be men…you know, the whole 'dangerous single men' narrative that's often put out there.

I could read it as being a poor communicator, but she does communicate ideas for a living.

It's the fact that only Alan Barrett called her out a bit, and everyone else was silent, that irritated me so much. She may have some valid points, but she never seems to be properly challenged and questioned…like others usually are if making some of the comments she does.

Katriona O'Sullivan was the 'academic leftie'. The 'posh' one was Alan Barrett - the only one questioning some of views (or perhaps the communication of her views).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,510 ✭✭✭Cole

Katriona O'Sullivan will be asked back ad nauseam. Apart from her (unbalanced imo) views on the protests, she's perfect for these kind of shows…backstory (genuinely impressive), an academic, everyone's a victim of the system etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭dublin49

I listened to most of the newspaper panel and was amazed the RTE bail out didnt get a decent grilling, appears this bailout is massively contentious and any self respecting similiar show would lead with this item rather than some woke non story about disrespecting a religious painting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,267 ✭✭✭Tow

I missed most of today, but I am not surprised the RTE bailout was not covered, or the fact that the bailout money was taken from the Social Welfare budget.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,494 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I have found boards to be hyperbolic and unreasonable about an awful lot. So when I read the comments above about the contributor I was rolling my eyes thinking more of the same.

Just listening back now. She's ridiculous. Her argument seems to be that the poor people in coolock are allowed protest because they are seeing people getting more than they have. But also says that the immigrants get less. And also said that the idea that the small cohort of right wing people being able to lead the community infantilises the community, but also said that the community is peaceful in protesting, so who is actually doing the protesting?

I don't get her fundamental point here. It seems to be based on leave Coolock alone I think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,510 ✭✭✭Cole

I think she's using the Coolock protests as an example of working class communities being ignored and left behind (probably has a very good point there), but the issue for me is that she also seems to completely ignore that some (not all) of the protesters are just plain old racists and/or 'scumbags' out to cause all kinds of trouble. She just ignores that because it gets in the way of her 'everyone's a victim' narrative. Slightly dangerous territory there.

The fact that the liberal types around her don't at least question her comments is what drives me mad. If a TD communicated similar points the way she does, there'd be a pile on in most media circles calling them apologists for racism, far right etc.

    She's also got a book to sell…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,905 ✭✭✭yosser hughes

Indeed, she has a book to sell and was also on Pat Kenny's radio show on Friday. She's all over the place on this and is very much signed up to the everyone is a victim and also seemed to talk about herself, a lot. She doesn't get held up to scrutiny by presenters because of her backstory.

    She's another Lynn Ruane basically.

She should be questioned more; because she's an utter bluffer; like so many in the sociology & psychology space.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,494 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

The guy on with her on the panel sort of pushed back, but BOC seemed to move the conversation on without it getting too detailed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,438 ✭✭✭plodder

But, part of the problem here is the perception that better off areas are not taking their share of these facilities. So, Hanafin was right to point that out (300 asylum seekers in Blackrock - with little or no objection apparently). It was probably the threatened legal action taken by Ballsbridge residents, against the plan to use a former guesthouse for asylum seekers, and which resulted in the state capitulating to them, which has created this impression. One valid point made by Katriona O'Sullivan though was that this information, where people are actually located, is basically impossible to obtain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,494 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Although if there was a public list of all housing for refugees then you'd just be giving the far right a list of places to protest.
