I think Martinez would be LB for Arsenal, which is where Arteta wanted him for.

Can't sell out home games but I think a bigger red flag has to be the trips to Wembley last season that they couldn't sell out.
Like there is no way Man Utd, Liverpool or even some smaller clubs get to Wembley and can't sell it out. If one fan can't make it there is another to take their place.

City used all the excuses about travel time, cost on fans and so on but they fail to grasp that simple fact about big clubs. There is always someone looking for a ticket to a cup semi for a big club.

Then we are meant to accept that City are getting fair market sponsorship deals and pulling in more money than Real Madrid. From who are they pulling this money in from? Who are they selling their products to? Who are sponsors paying to get their products advertised to?

It doesn't make a lick of sense

Phil Foden has had a great season this season. Probably will get nominated for POTY levels.

But him playing in his 7th PL season, and turning 24 this month, and still getting nominated for YPOTY is a bit much.

They should probably put some sort of experience qualifier into it.

Haaland, Foden and Saka all competing for the same award as Udogie, Mainoo and Palmer is bizarre.

Saka, Saliba, Halaand and Isak are as bad.

I say it every year, drop the age to anyone who is 21 or under at the start of the season and that's the cut off. Or 23 and under but you can't have played more than 25 games for a first team in any league.

The Premier League's award is just a marketing tool, it was spawned because the PFA decided to cap the age of players elligible for the Young Player of the Year at 21 years and coincidentally the better U21 players were not playing in the Premier League.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,826 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Model it after the American Leagues "Rookie of the Year".

Under 21 and hasn't started more than 10 League games the previous season.

Yeah there definitely needs to be some criteria for YPOTY beyond just the player's age.

Of the players nominated I'd only really consider Mainoo, Palmer, and Udogie to fit the category.

EDIT: If Foden wins it'll be his third YPOTY! And he won his first in 2021 it just doesn't make sense!

All these awards are pointless anyway. Nothing to get worked up about. The golden glove being the most pointless.

The idea that Rice, as great as he is, is up for POTY and Rodri isn't, is categorically mental.

I see Manager of the Season has been turned partly into a poll. Emery is gettin f*cked here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,972 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Palmer has the YPOTY sown up you'd imagine. He's had a great season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,900 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

But Emery will have the moral win, and that's the real win!

FWIW, I think Emery should get it. The Top 3 managers are performing as expected, Emery overachieved as did Iriola and they should be placed higher.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,892 ✭✭✭✭CSF

The only 2 managers likely to properly overachieve (honourable mention to Gary O’Neill). Obviously I think Arteta in particular has done some good work this year.

However, it’s looking increasingly likely that he will have added Rice, Havertz, Raya and Timber (yes I know) to fill the areas that they fell short in last year, had a ridiculously injury free season for almost all of their most important players, and still fallen short in all 4 competitions.

If you’re going there this year, you may aswell rename the thing to ‘which manager from the big 6 we think has done best this year’

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,900 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

I would say that Ange has ever so slightly over-achieved given his inexperience in the league and because I had Spurs down to finish 6th, when they will probably finish 5th!

Howe probably performing as was expected.

Poch & ETH both been massive fails.

Moyes is either meeting expectations or is underperforming depending on who you speak to. I'd lean towards the latter.

Just to qualify "Arsenal - "fallen short in all 4 competitions"", this is actually how early their quadruple ended, others added for dramatic effect :)

Manchester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa 27Sep2023, Arsenal, Manchester United 01Nov2023,

Newcastle United 13Dec2023, West Ham United 20Dec2023, Liverpool 17Mar2024.

Rodri is the best player in the league.

it should be 'rookie of the season', or something like that, and it should be Palmer's all day long.

manager of the season is Arteta if he wins the League, and Emery if not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,130 ✭✭✭jacool

I still think the league is up for grabs, but clearly most don't due to the relentlessness of Man City at this time of year. Those dates look funny to me because every year people focus on a "Liverpool quadruple meltdown" when in fact 8 clubs had a chance for 4 trophies this season. Poor old Bayer Leverkusen only got to go for a treble!!

What an utterly bizarre way to look at a season

I am coming around to the idea that the deep sitting midfielder at a successful club always gets to look fantastic, and perhaps more than merited.

Makelele was a gamechanger. Carrick was the most underrated player ever according to many. Busquets was a legend. Fernandinho was the real superstar for Man City. Except actually, now its Rodri who is the real superstar for City.

Is Rodri really the best player in the league? Or is he just the latest in a long line of players that get to look great sitting behind the best attackers in the league?

And yes, I know not everybody can play that role, and the job still needs to be done. I just find the high praise for Rodri to be somewhat familiar.

the young player of the year needs to be changed to breakout star or something.

foden, saka, haaland certainly should be no where near it. few other debatable also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,972 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

I just looked it up but Isak made his first team debut in February 2016 in Sweden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,210 ✭✭✭✭rob316

The manager who wins 4 league titles in a row will get it, but purely on over achieving it has to be emery.

Rodri should be POTY, city can not function without him, Foden close second. Palmer undoubtedly YPOTY

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,826 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Branthwaite, Garnacho, Palmer, Mainoo, Udogie, Aït-Nouri, Joao Pedro and Mengi would be far more sensible nominees for young player.

I nearly put in Quansah and Wharton but they've really not played much as I thought.

Watch Rodri for a full game, he's a phenomenal footballer.

I think you've found a trend but made the wrong conclusion. Great teams don't make great holding midfielders - you don't get to the top without one.

Kids would be a huge part of it. Kids like teams that win things. City are winning and they've got superstars.

There is no chance in hell that City are bigger than Real Madrid. Just them cooking the books as usual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,005 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Have you a link to where it says they are bigger than Real Madrid?

If you are talking about Forbes the last time I read it Real were the top soccer team, United second, Barcelona third

I think Liverpool were fourth and City had passed Bayern for fifth.

After winning manager of the month for the first 3 months I’d say he’s been found out. You can’t expect to run the legs off your players game in game out through a full season. They had no European football, they had no domestic cup runs, Man United a basket case, Chelsea very much a work in progress that only started finding a bit of consistent form recently. They lost out on 4th and a CL spot to a fairly average workmanlike Villa side who have also collapsed. It was a great opportunity for Ange to get Spurs in the CL, they blew it
