Unbelievable. Really disagree with penalties as a way to decide GAA games but I thought the standard of place kicking was high. Delighted for Monaghan, thought they were marginally the better team. And absolutely thrilled for McManus. He is a special player.

I did but it's rare that amount of time is added in 10 minute period. Armagh had the week break coming into that game today and didn't make it count. If the boot was on the other foot I'm thinking Monaghan still would have won and would do so in normal time than needing a penalty shootout.

Sure if they had replays there would be accusations of the typical ‘grab all association’ - delayed fixtures - player burn out etc.

Would you prefer free taking instead of penalties?

The analysis lads on GAA were taking frees there at the end.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

If Mayo win it will be semi final against Monaghan?

Exactly saying hardluck McGeeney for another penalty shootout loss completely glosses over the dirt that Armagh tried on Galway last year etc.

Armagh no loss to the championship, great forwards not used properly. I will be really interested to see what Monaghan can do in the SF's.

Just a wee tweak needed to the penalty shoot out….if a player misses first time around, teams should have the option to rotate him out to protect him from what happened tonight. It’s an amateur sport.

Deffo. That was terrible for yer man. Poor f**ker.

Everyone should only take one untill everyone on the team including the keeper has had a go.

I think so, as kerry v mayo would be a repeat fixture so wouldn’t be allowed.

The potential SF draw and possible permutations is explained here

'The four Quarter-Final winners from this weekend's games will be drawn to two Semi-Finals - subject to avoidance of repeat pairings from the overall championship, where possible. The Semi-Finals are due to take place on Saturday, July 15th & Sunday, July 16th at Páirc an Chrócaigh.

    Possible Repeat Pairings.

Kerry v Cork, Kerry v Mayo, Cork v Mayo, Tyrone v Armagh, Tyrone v Monaghan, Armagh v Derry & Monaghan v Derry.'

·'If Kerry, Cork & Mayo win, a repeat pairing can’t be avoided, so all four teams would be drawn from the same bowl, 1st team out will play the 2nd team. The 3rd team will play the 4th team drawn.'

Peter Keane wasn’t unlucky, he was a bad manager who couldn’t set up a defensive system properly.

He didn’t know how to close out a game when a point and man up against Dublin- he started bringing on extra defenders and telling players to drop back.

He put in probably the worst managerial performance I can remember by a Kerry manager down in cork- Clifford spending a large chunk of the game in his own half- no attacking plan and picking 2 defensive wing forwards against an inferior team.

Tyrone in 21 was the same again- didn’t know how to set the team up defensively, didn’t know what to do once Clifford went off.

a poor manager all round who didn’t know how to win- nothing to do with luck.

And- as an aside, the players were mostly delighted to see the back of him

I actually would. It’s a skills used more in our game.

How you would go about it is up for debate big time obviously.

Frees from the 45 would be very tough on most sides.

Yes and Monaghan are a team that will cause Mayo serious problems. They do not play well against a blanket defence. If Mayo get past Dublin, I can see Monaghan V Kerry All Ireland Final.

Did they try free taking competitions years ago as an experiment but abandoned it?

    -

Edit - yeah they did 6 years ago they have freetaking competitions in hurling and football in the league to settle draws

    --

I am not sure how exciting it would be in hurling as it could go on forever - maybe sideline cuts would be better?

But in football I wouldn't have a problem with it, especially as it would force other players to take frees.

Just reading back over predictions. Fair play, you've been on target so far.

Well it was the correct amount to add the 4 after the 3 because the Armagh man was down for 4.

Ref got it spot on to give Monaghan one last go.

Both teams know that someone will be the one who misses. They pick the best penalty takers based on practice by all the squad. The Northern Sound commentators remarked how evident it was the both teams, and especially the keepers had done their penalty training and research.

With such a long history in soccer already, the pain for individual players is now recognised as just part of the territory. They do not live that long in the memory in most cases. The most unfortunate thing in the the modern world is that the player will probably get death threats from some internet users.

The avoidance of repeat pairings is nonsense once it gets to semi final stage. If Kerry and Mayo were pulled out of a bowl tomorrow so what? It's not like they met 7 days before the semi final.

Please everyone, write off Monaghan again for the semi’s, it’s working wonders! 😁

He was a Crossmaglen player, if you are going to issue him a death threat then you should make sure that your Internet account really is anonymous!

Interesting after the game Vinnie Corey said they didn't practice penalties he simply chose the five fellas he trusted the most to take them.

Anyone with a couple of spare juvenile tickets?

    No.

There's a draw for sure tomorrow after the Mayo/Dublin game. The only scenario that avoided the draw was Tyrone & Derry both winning, forcing the winners of Armagh/Monaghan and Dublin/Mayo to face each other (as both Tyrone and Derry had already played against whichever of Armagh and Monaghan made it through). That didn't pan out with Kerry's win so we'll have a draw for sure once the last two teams are known from Cork/Derry and Mayo/Dublin.

If Cork & Mayo win: Repeat pairings can't be avoided for Cork/Kerry/Mayo so it's a fully open draw.

If Cork & Dublin win: Kerry/Cork go one side of the draw (to avoid the repeat) drawn against one of Dublin/Monaghan on the other side.

If Derry & Mayo win: Kerry/Mayo go on one side of the draw (to avoid repeat) drawn against one of Derry/Monaghan (to avoid repeat) on the other side.

If Derry & Dublin win: Dublin/Kerry go on one side of the draw drawn against one of Derry/Monaghan (to avoid repeat) on the other side.

Did you ever hear the expression you make your own luck. McGeeney is not unlucky neither was Peter Keane

Place kicking was average. Goalies were tired. Demand on a Gas Goalie now is totally different to a soccer goalie. He up and down the pitch and needs flexibility training as well. Place kicking was solid but not spectacular.

Maybe free taking or 45s. Or just throw the ball in one last time and next score wins. Idk penalties is very soccer imo, doesn't sit right. The whinging about fouls and playing for frees and the standard of refereeing is already soccer enough imo. Don't need penalties on top of it.

No amateur player should be put in a position where he missed two out of his team’s nine penalties. It’s just moronic that they make the same 5 go again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,028 ✭✭✭doc_17

McGeeney isn’t that nice. Armagh players do a lot of diving these days. Also, late hits, dropping on players on the ground with their knees….McGeeney himself was a fine player but every time he got beat a man he’d foul him. He had a brilliant set of forwards there and what does he do? Play so defensively that he only scores 14 points in almost 100 mins of football. He’s holding them back. Keep him there.

Very predicable easy win for Kerry. A lot of pundits totally lost the run of themselves during the week building this up as a close game.

Tyrone should have been eliminated two weeks ago by a team that couldn't get out of division 3 in the league. It was talked about like Tyrone were imbued with some sort of inherent Kerry kryptonite, when they're just an average team in bad form now.
