2022 Paddy Power Gold Cup Trends

    10 November 2022//by Andy Newton

Run over 2m 4 ½ furlongs the Paddy Power Gold Cup is the feature contest at the three-day Cheltenham Open Meeting, held each year in the middle of November (11th-13th Nov 2022).

The ‘Pond House’ Pipe stable are the leading yard with nine wins in the race, with Celestial Gold, Our Vic and Great Endeavour, who won the contest in 2011, their most-recent winners.

In 2017, the Paddy Power Gold Cup was won by the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Splash Of Ginge – a win that gave the yard their third success in the race since 2008 and their four overall.

In 2020, we saw the Evan Williams-trained Coole Cody and could be back for more in 2022, while 12 months ago it was the Sue Smith-trained Midnight Shadow that won the race.

We take a look at the 2022 Paddy Power Gold Cup renewal from a stats angle – this year run on Saturday 12th November.

Recent Paddy Power Gold Cup Winners

    2021 – Midnight Shadow (9/1)

    2020 - Coole Cody (10/1)

    2019 - Happy Diva (14/1)

    2018 - Baron Alco (8/1)

    2017 - Splash Of Ginge (25/1)

    2016 - Taquin Du Seuill (8/1)

    2015 – Annacotty (12/1)

    2014 – Caid Du Berlais (10/1)

    2013 – Johns Spirit (7/1)

    2012 – Al Ferof (8/1)

    2011 – Great Endeavour (8/1)

    2010 – Little Josh (20/1)

    2009 – Tranquil Sea (11/2 fav)

    2008 – Imperial Commander (13/2)

    2007 – L’Antartique (13/2)

    2006 – Exotic Dancer (16/1)

    2005 – Our Vic (9/2 fav)

    2004 – Celestial Gold (12/1)

    2003 – Fondmort (3/1 fav)

    2002 – Cyfor Malta (16/1)

Paddy Power Gold Cup Betting Trends

20/20 – Had run at Cheltenham before

19/20 – Had won over at least 2m4f over fences before

    19/20 – Won by a UK-based trainer

16/20 – Returned 14/1 or shorter in the betting

    14/20 – Carried 11st or less

14/20 – Had won at Cheltenham before

14/20 – Finished in the top 4 last time out

    12/20 – Aged 6 or 7 years-old

12/20 – Had won just 2 or 3 times over fences before

    11/20 – Trained by Pipe (3), Jonjo O’Neill (3), Nicholls (2) or Twiston-Davies (3)

    10/20 – Placed favourites

9/20 – Won by a horse in the first 3 in the betting

    9/20 – Aged 7 years-old

8/20 – Won this on their seasonal reappearance

5/20 – Won their last race

5/20 – Ran at Cheltenham last time out

4/20 – Trained by the Pipe stable

    3/20 – Winning favourites

    3/20 – Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies

    3/20 – Trained by Jonjo O’Neill

3/20 – Ran at Carlisle last time out

    2/20 – Ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies

    1/20 – Irish-trained winners

The last winner aged in double-figures was in 1975

Paul Nicholls has saddled 11 placed horses (two winners, Al Ferof & Caid Du Berlais) from his last 43 runners

The average winning SP in the last 20 years is 10.5/1

    Above from GEEGEEZ.CO.UK

so the Irish are 1/20, not really getting excited about any at the front of the betting so I will take a chance on the Alan King horse

looked at that Galahad Threepwood myself last night (one of the very few i looked at), but couldn't make a case for him 'on the clock' hahahah 😃 (not always the best way of finding a winner tbs)

think he has a few lengths to find myself, but what do i know 😋

beyond that, race looked too hard to solve

he seems to be gone into single figures with most the books anyhow ,, good luck with him del 🙂 ☺️

    Mussleburgh 3.35 LASTOFTHECOSMICS 2pts e/w 20/1 powers 4 places

    Ok the negatives first

    1. I couldn't pick me nose at the moment
    2. only one win from 15 over hurdles but has placed 6 times
    3. 194 DSL

    Now some pluses

1 form at the course over hurdles 4463 when rated 93 to 96 runs off 87 today

2 todays jockey seems to be his regular rider these days

3 trainer has a 33% place strike rate at course in class 5 handicap hurdle with a poor win ratio 2/39 however horse seems to like the hurdle course here 20/1 seems fair for 4 places.

    Wolverhampton 8.30 POSITIVE FORCE 1pt e/w 50/1 skybet 4 places

50s looks generous considering 4 places up for grabs obviously something a miss with the horse being dumped out of Kevin Ryans yard after only 7 races however some of the winners he raced against when trained by Ryan are rated a few pound higher than this field.

the sires stats are terrible however the trainer books Tom Eaves who has form figures 245 the only time he has ridden the horse.

As I say 50s might be a little too big considering 4 places avaiable
