I think anyone who commits one of these mass shootings should be executed. If anyone should be executed it's these guys, they killed a bunch of people and there is zero doubt as to their guilt. Can you imagine losing a friend or family member in one of these mass shootings? Doesn't bear thinking about.

Being executed is not really paying for his crimes.

Spending the rest of his life, 23 hours per day in a jail cell staring at the wall is.

I'd rather be alive in prison than executed. They can read books and work out or whatever in prison, or occasionally have a really good night's sleep or a relaxing shower provided they ain't getting raped. They get used to it and could probably have relatively decent moments here and there once they come to terms with the situation. Shoot them dead instead, and that rhymes too.

All the warning signs were there but were not addressed. He pulled the trigger but at the end of the day there are far more people out there who played a part in the lead up to this event.

I think life in prison is justified given the impressive number of kills. Executing him won’t prevent this from happening again. This wasn’t a cold blooded killer but a kid that has serious issues and totally lost control. It’a sad how frequently they fall through the cracks and how nothing is ever learned.

I don't agree with mass shootings, I can understand the killers mindsets of deep misanthropy but it isn't the right way of going about things. If you carry out an attack you are giving society the right to abuse you and demonise you, they have a free ticket to do. You also ruin your reputation and your family reputation for eternity.

In incel forums they glorify mass shootings but I think it is mainly just edgy online speak. There isn't much chance of them actually going out and doing it themselves. The most famous shooter is Elliot Rodger whose attack actually failed. He planned to kill loads of white women yet ended up stabbing a few Asian males. The reason is the sorority house he planned to shoot up was locked. Imagine that level of failed planning.

Every now and then one of those lads will get into a tear and actually start shooting fellas. Those incel forums are bad news, reading them too much won't do your own mind any good either.

Death penalty all day long.Im not a soft person but I've followed bits of the trial and the testimony from the families is gut wrenching.

14 year old girls with nothing but their bare hands to protect them against a weapon that will tear their insides to shreds. And most of those kids didnt die instantly.

His own public defenders have cried and the jury supposedly had a hard time watching the CCTV of the actual killings.

For the damage he has done,he should die.

    Typical pinko response.

I was reading recently about child killer John Wayne Gacy. A particularly monstrous manifestation of evil was that guy and certainly a person who deserved to be put to death, but it took 14 years on death row and many other guards and inmates wounded by him in attacks he carried out while in prison.

Now, evil is a subjective status. Are people truly evil, or are acts that are judged to be" evil" simply a demonstration of very serious mental illness and Cluster B personality disorders?

Personally, I don't care about that distinction. Any person who will indiscriminately take the lives of multiple innocents, irrespective of their motivation, should simply be ended.

Why would anyone want to pay millions to keep such a creature locked up for 30 or 40 years, with zero prospect of release. Of what value is that waste of oxygen?

The Parkland killer, as with all other mass shooters, once convicted, should be put against a wall and their lives ended by firing squad.

Such parallels offer no consolation to bereaved families, I'm sure, but the debate about lethal injections and the theatre of electric chairs are all left to one side when all you need is a yard wall, a blindfold and five marksmen with rifles.

Some people truly do not deserve to live.

I just don't believe in the death penalty so never. You have to hire a person to kill another person so what becomes of that person?

It is the same where people go on about prisons should be brutal and torture through action and inaction serves the person right. You need to hire sadomasochists to let a place run like that and then let these people walk around society.

Actually, the exact opposite would be the effect. They go to prison and they get fan mail, dedicated forums on incel enclaves, tribute posters/music/memes. They are, in effect, glorified until their release or you could just execute them and move on. Lots of kids do this to be ''seen'' because they're invisible before it. Make them invisible again by putting them in the ground, not propping them up on a pedestal.

It will leave the community of folks that love this crap nobody to correspond with, nobody to lovingly protest for and use as a symbol for their backwards incel mindset. I agree that to punish murder with murder may send the wrong message but the alternative will only make more shooters.

Nothing about this is ''impressive'' at all by the way.

Execution is not a power any country should have.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,491 ✭✭✭bb1234567

Personally if my family were killed in the attack I'd prefer he were just executed. Some posters spoke of him deserving punishment and sure enough yeh but there's no guarantee he will hate living in a prison (any more than he clearly hated living in normal society in order to do this), and also his suffering will bring no comfort to me personally in the face of the loss of my family. Knowing he's gone from the earth would allow me to move on and forget he existed. I think if he remained alive , my hatred for him would also. Also the thought of him outliving me and my daughter/son who he murdered would also disturb me for some reason.

No different to cancer, this lad needs to be cut out from society. It's not about punishment it's about eradication.

First they came for the socialists...

    I'm in two minds.

    Here's my rational mind.

    1. I'm not against the death penalty per se.
    2. I'm not in favour of executing people who are mentally ill.
    3. Is he mentally ill? If so, don't execute him. If he's not mentally ill, execute him.

    Here's my irrational/emotional mind.

    1. I'm not against the death penalty per se.
    2. If he killed any of my firends or family, I'd want the fcuker executed pronto.
    3. Who cares if he's mentally ill, he killed my family/friend, execute him.

I've you've got two minds you might be mentally ill.

Kill him because killing is wrong?

There's a timeline on a page made by the parents of one of his victims makes interesting reading, in terms of warning signs missed/ignored.

    https://www.schentrup.com/msd-tragedy-timeline

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,189 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Maybe he should die but I wouldn't kill him in cold blood myself and don't expect the society I live in to devise a system to do it on my behalf.

  • Registered Users Posts: 27,003 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

From that timeline this kid was seriously damaged and needed to be taken into full time care for everyones sake.

"It's not about punishment it's about eradication"

Killing the attacker doesnt really do anything to eradicate the problem. These people are not well, they are not logically thinking about the aftermath of their actions.

Life in jail where he will have a limited chance to harm anybody else should do it.

That goes both ways... Anyway even professional psychology involves a lot of vagueness, assumptions and inaccuracies.

He's still a threat to others within the prison system, and as the anti-capital punishment crowd are so fond of pointing out, other criminals might be innocent, therefore he's a risk to those possible innocents.

And if the lobbying/appeals processes work, and he returns to society? After tricking people into thinking he's "reformed"?

Nah. Execute him. Remove the chance completely for any further harm from someone like him.

It won't do anything to stop others from doing what he did.. but it will remove one nutjob from society. That's worth doing.

Are there people that DO agree with mass shootings? I would have thought not agreeing with them was the presumed baseline for any conversation on the topic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 27,003 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

that did stand out to me as a particularly bizarre way of phrasing that sentence...

anyone owning guns should be locked up in a looney bins still cant wrap my head around americans aloud to own guns should be banned immediately and if you try to hold on to them then its off to jail or the nuthouse with you

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,758 ✭✭✭✭BattleCorp

    🙄 🙄 🙄

So you'd lock up every farmer who has a shotgun and throw them into a looney bin eh? And every hunter, target shooter and Olympic athlete who takes part in any event using a gun?

Very logical approach and not at all a nonsensical thing to suggest.

It's wishful thinking to believe that Americans would allow their guns to be taken away from them. I know Americans who own upwards of 15-20 firearms, and they've stated they (and their families) would resist any attempt to take their rights away.. considering the range of associations and clubs for gun owners, any serious attempt to ban or remove those guns would likely result in major conflicts.

It's also worth remembering just how much of a military nation the US is... It's unrealistic to expect the US to completely or successfully ban firearm ownership. Not going to happen.
