What’s with that picture? They make it seem like the cork-Limerick road isn’t going ahead

    Idiots, that’s what’s up.

For anyone who hasn’t read the threads so far, a reminder:

    1. N24 and N20 are both proceeding through the option selection process, and both will be built unless some dramatic collapse in government funding happens.
    2. The N24 and N20 projects are entirely independent of each other. Building or not building one of them has no effect on the other going ahead.
    3. N24 will most likely be built as a 2+2 dual carriageway, not a motorway.
    5. N20 will most likely be built as a motorway standard road.

I’d say the M20 will get done this time, hardly start from scratch a third (?) time. Anyway, that’s for the other thread.

It’s not an official picture from the project website as credited on the news article. Lazy journalism as usual.

On Chrome their consultation room is a black screen with some icons on it, it works better with Edge.
Hover over the bottom-left book and click Brochure English. Then scroll to the second last page to see the options map.
The Pink route is an online upgrade which probably won't be chosen as these usually aren't. The Green Route runs south of the existing road, the yellow to the north, while the Blue route is a combination. Starting from Limerick Junction, it runs along the existing route for a while before swinging to the south then crossing over to pass north of Tipperary town. Then it runs to the north of the existing route to the end at Cahir.

There is 2 link options as well and a few other options for linking different routes . The green option goes online at cordangan to west of bansha and veers west and south of bansha . A park and ride facility at Limerick junction

Do you think this project will also recommend upgrades to rail services and cycling facilities like the M20? I hope that becomes standard

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,012 ✭✭✭Paddico

I dont think thats what will happen with the M20. A faster rail line via limerick junction seems to be the preferred option

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,699 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

I think the poster would consider a faster rail line via LJ under the heading of "upgrades to rail services". I'm sure some level of public transport improvement will have to be considered, in this case it might be determined that the case for rail isn't strong enough and buses on the upgraded road is good enough. Cycling provision will almost certainly be considered, I think it is a standard part of the 2+2 road design now.

This looks fantastic. I hadn’t realised it went as far west as Brooks Bridge.

One thing, if this is to be 2+2 west of Tipp Town the route around Ballykisteen looks interesting to say the least

The part around the Limerick junction is causing a lot of local debate. It will be interesting to see what they do around there

  • Registered Users Posts: 315 ✭✭steeler j

Reports say it isn't going to be a motorway ( just like everyone here already knew ) . Single or dual carriageway or a possibility of a mixture of both

  • Registered Users Posts: 447 ✭✭Limerick74

Given today’s announcement, can we now all agree that the N24 & N20 are separate projects and both are needed on their own merits?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 4,951 Mod ✭✭✭✭spacetweek

Yep, happy with that, ticks a lot of boxes:

    • Starts at Jct 10 on M8 so the N24 will flow through and not require motorists to use the M8 for part of the journey. This would have been planned all along when the M8 was built.
    • Junction and link provided for Bansha.
    • Local link roads included for Tipp Town which should enable more compact development to occur.
    • Wide part of existing N24 northwest of Tipp Town reused for new alignment.
    • Despite the name it continues well past LJ nearly as far as Ballyluddy.

Is there any plan to upgrade the section from Oola to Limerick city? It seems strange to omit this as it's probably the busiest section of the N24.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 14,341 Mod ✭✭✭✭marno21

There isn’t. Given that the other 90km of the N24 is on the list it is rather surprising that it was omitted.

Perhaps with a different party in power it may commence planning and design after the next NDP review.

The Limerick end is very busy, but it's also safe, with good sightlines, and a consistent cross-section - most of it is wide single carriageway with few entrances, and the bit that’s narrow (Pallasgreen to Richmond) is very straight. Quite a bit may even be amenable to an online upgrade in future.

Both of the N24 projects were primarily aimed at addressing the very poor safety record of this road. I suspect that the choice of 2+2 was also for safety reasons, given the high amount of medium-distance agricultural and freight traffic in this part of the country.
