As the title states, which of our political party's would be most like the Republican party in America, or somewhat similar to it.

None of them at all - thankfully.

I agree. None of them are remotely like the US Republican party, either in terms of organisation, values or policy positions. Things are bad, but they're not that bad.

Oh I remember reading an article about some of the Young Fine Gael members going to some Republican conference in America, so presumed maybe they were on the same level to an extent.

Ireland's political and ideological spectrum simply doesn't overlap to the extent you can reasonably compare the GOP with a party here. Nor should we: the greatest poison to our politics would be importing the policies or cultural priorities of America into our country; we should define our future by our needs, problems and issues, not America's.

At a stretch, you could possibly point at Renua or the National Party as having similar cultural or social perspectives as the GOP - but neither party are even remotely relevant here, while they would be parties trying to adopt American constructs for local use. With zero success, as we often see. At best, they exist for the purposes of online mockery.

They are Irish Republicans not US Republicans- big difference

Unfortunately none of them seem to match to the traditional social values as well as business friendly policies that align with the Republican pary in the US. Inspite of the numerous MSM opinion pieces and the ni'gh lockstep approbration of the progressive fixated members of boards, their polices have a broad range of support in that country as well as hosting a wider range of diverse opinions ( from social conservate to Elon Musk level libertarinism) than the establishment Irish political parties. A good resource to learn more about them is their Reddit forum: r/Conservative/ .

Don't forget the Qanon, anti-vaxx and pro-insurrection wings of the party in your "diverse opinions".

They didn't even bother producing a policy platform at the last presidential election. It's a party now fueled primarily by identity politics and grievances.

I know this is probably restricted to ROI but the DUP are a mirror image of the GOP.

FF and FG are Irish Republicans too.

The context is different but they have things in common with the Republican Party that make them 'most like' it.

Sinn Fein. Hyper nationalists. Populist. Opposes everything the other side do regardless of the policy. Promises their working class voters the impossible and blames their opponents when it can't be delivered.

And of course both like their guns.

Ah lads. Trying to conflate a left wing party like Sinn Fein and a hard-right party like the American Republican party just isn't credible.

Yes some of the YFG members are very extreme in their views. Some that I have met are extreme pro-lifers and homophobic. Why they would join a party who legalised abortion and same sex marriage and has a gay leader is beyond me. Killian Foley Walsh was the president of YFG when he went to that congress. He had to resign shortly after if I remember rightly. There are definitely a sizeable cohort of individuals within YFG that would be comparable to the republican party.

In my opinion shooting and blowing up members of another nationality based on them not being the same nationality as you pretty much pushes you into the hyper nationalistic category.

    There really, really wouldn't.

The Tories, maybe. But not the Republican Party.

I know a State Senator in a certain southern State quite well, through a family connection and I can say from what I've seen up close, at events, from conversations, there isn't a sinner in Irish politics, let alone Young Fine Gael, that could even touch the conservative, evangelical and blinkered ultra-nationalistic views of the Republican organisation.

The only answer, to which of our parties is most like the Republican Party of America, would be one of the those tiny crank outfits that have never been elected to so much as a Council seat, never mind the Dáil, like the Christian Solidarity Party. I doubt even Renua could be compared to the GOP, though probably in ways it could.

They are supported by the likes of the KKK, religious bigots, gun nuts, the ignorant and those who profit from them.

They have literally nothing a sane rational person would want to emulate in this country or any other in terms of social or financial/business policies.

Not as crazy as the headline would make you believe.

More than 20 other states allow concealed weapons in public without a permit, according to Stateline, an initiative of the Pew Charitable Trusts.

To obtain a weapons license, residents must submit an application and fee and undergo fingerprinting in addition to a background check. Convicted felons and people who have been hospitalized for mental health problems or received treatment for drugs or alcohol in the years preceding the application aren't eligible.

Republicans, though, said people would still have to pass a federal background check to buy a gun. The permits would still exist, as well, because they allow people to carry guns outside Georgia under interstate agreements.

“This bill does not change who can carry or where you can carry," said Rep. Heath Clark, Republican from Warner Robins. "It simply says that if you meet all of the qualifications that the state has laid out to be able to carry a firearm in this state, that you can carry that firearm without having to ask permission and pay what is essentially a tax.”

None of the above which is a cherry pick of the full article, where you left out parts such as

But Democrats, warning of public opinion polls citing opposition, vowed to make Republicans pay for the move.

“We’ve all witnessed the pressures that the majority party is under, the pressure to cater to far-right activists that are so disconnected from reality that they cannot be reasoned with,”

is anything a sane or rational person would want in their country in terms of firearms or political policy from a party, but it is standard fare from the republican party.

Thanks to the FPTP system both parties in the USA (and England ) are amalgamations of groups that would otherwise be separate parties. And like England the trend is for the extreme groups to take them away from the centre.

There used to be an overlap between the two main groups and it was easy to see the middle ground being able to look to either. Now there's a huge gap between them and the middle ground like in England only have a negative choice of the least worst option.

On many social issues all of our main parties are further away from the Republicans than the Democrats are. Healthcare, welfare, justice, policing, foreign policy, foreign aid, public transport, fuel costs, languages other than English, religion, defence, guns, prison rehabilitation, hunting. Pick a topic and it's fairly likely we don't fall between those parties.
