Where to get iodine tablets in case there is a nuclear attack?

Hi all,

So let's get some things straight first in case I am bombarded by comments that say this. 1. A nuclear attack on Ireland even during the current concerning geopolitical situation is highly unlikely as it is not a NATO member and nowhere near the front lines currently 2. I am aware that iodine tablets (potassium iodine, KI) should never be taken unless there is an acute nuclear emergency 3. They will only ever so slightly increase your chances of surviving the fallout of a nuclear attack.

That said, I would definitely feel more at ease if I had some KI tablets here at home. Just in case, you know. Hopefully we will never have to use them.

I was wondering where I can get them in Ireland? Any online store that sells them and delivers to Ireland (dublin) would be great as well. Do run of the mill pharmacies have them?

I know that in the past, the government has sent them out here, about 20 years ago when I wasn't even living here still. But it's no use waiting for the government to send them out as doing so now would cause panic in the people or maybe some would take them without reason and then it would be poisonous. So hence I am willing to pay money to obtain my own but I have been searching across google and had difficulty finding it.

KI can be in the form of a pill or a supersaturated solution. The recommended daily dosage for an adult is 130 milligrams. If the thyroid absorbs all the iodine that it needs from the nonradioactive KI, then the radioactive iodine will not be absorbed and will be eliminated from the body mostly by way of the urine.

Because our airport's are used by the US military we would be a legitimate target. If a nuclear attack happens iodine is no good to ya as you will awaking to an inhospitable world.

I dont think these pills are meant to be consumed in case of nuclear disaster but rather they are some sort of natural supplement for whatever. It does not contain potassium iodine (KI)

Have both the iodine tablets and the bunker to go along with them, but neither will be of much use if we actually take a hit. We live within three clicks of an aging nuclear plant. The tablets are expected to help if there was an unusually high release at the power plant as a result of an accident and even then you are instructed only to take them on instructions from the government so either the timing is significant or there are serious consequences from taking them and they are a last resource.

To the best of my knowledge there are no nuclear power plants in Ireland at all. Maybe there's one relatively close by in Great Britain that I don't know.

Taking a sudden large dose of iodine is indeed really bad for your health, that is why they urge people not to take the pills as a ' precaution'. But that large dose of iodine is not even nearly as dangerous as getting radition poisoning of your thyroid which will most likely result in your death quite quickly. That is why these pills exist. The iodine from the pills take up the place of the radioactive iodine that can come from a nuclear plant or nuclear bomb strike.

I can understand that the Irish government doesnt want to send out these pills right now because a lot of .... not very smart people ..... are just immediately going to eat them and then they get iodine overdose for nothing.

Ireland is essentially "a waste of a nuke". I wouldn't worry about it. Also iodine tablets only somewhat protect your thyroid gland from nuclear damage, and nothing else.

I'd imagine the timing is important. The point of them is so that your body has enough and doesn't absorb the radioactive version floating around. If you took all 6 today, your body would probably just expel what it can't absorb for now and in a week be back to where it was

To be honest, in the event of a nuclear attack I'd probably rather go in the initial blast than maybe end up half-blind, suffering with radiation sickness and struggling to survive in a society breaking down among others who have no idea how to fend for or feed themselves without supermarkets and online shopping.

Not a future I'd want to be around for myself.

If only there was a website that you could put terms into and it would search the internet for you. That'd be deadly. I'd called it "The Website That Looks For Stuff For You". edit: just to be helpful to the op, if I remember correctly, a all-seaweed-diet would provide plenty of iodine. So, zombie apocolypse and the only bright side is you get to eat nothing but seaweed. Winner!

In case you didn't know, nuclear fallout really affects you when it gets inside your body, where it stays stuck and irradiate your sensitive parts from the inside. Most radiation coming from the outside will be stopped by clothes and the dead skin layer - that is, in the amounts expected from a fallout, not a direct hit. So basic hygiene and masks will actually go a long way in protecting you.
