BMW automatic used car query

hello, buying a 6 year old used BMW car from a garage who is is giving me 3 months engine and gear box warranty.

Car had one owner with high miles on it 300K (kms).. went to see it and it looks okay but it was unclean and had small bits broken like radio button etc.. it seems garage man is bit busy or lazy that he didn't get to clean it.. even under the bonnet it was unclean..

garage guy is ready to fix these before the sale.. checked the car history report which is okay.

also the car computer shows the service history log.... what should i check before buying it ?

If the dealer couldn't be bothered in making the car presentable by at least cleaning it, for resale then it might give you an insight of what a 3 month engine and gearbox warranty is actually worth from them. 300k km on a 6 year old car is fairly hefty mileage and your really into unpredictable territory when it comes to reliability or how good that short warranty actually is when it comes to needing it.

thanks but 3 month warranty felt better than nothing when buying from private... it feels like car was used extensively and not kept clean but its 4/5 grand cheaper compared to similarly old cars due to high mileage...

Just personal experience but I always found newer cars with high mileage to be more reliable than older cars with low mileage. Resale can be difficult tho if you plan on doing high mileage yourself.

What garage is selling the car? And is it an in house warranty or 3rd party?

A warranty is only as good as the dealer standing over it. Some of them are not worth the paper they are written when it comes to some of the cowboys out there.

thanks .. we do very little mileage so think in next few years mileage will average out ..

first time buying from garage so not sure how the warranty works.. will check with him today

Is this BMW a diesel car? It's crazy to be buying a diesel car if your doing very little mileage.

yes, it is diesel but market only has diesel cars in automatic

I think you will be buying trouble. Your driving doesn't suit a diesel car and you will end up having problems with it related to that.

How much do you have to spend?

Realistically in the current used car market that is not going to get you anything decent in respect of your criteria. If you are ok with something a bit smaller then a Lexus IS300h petrol/hybrid is worth looking at.

OP you'd be wise to take the good advice you've gotten above to be honest. 300k is huge mileage on a 6yr old car. That car would have required oil changes twice a year with that mileage and I bet it hasn't, probably hadn't even had annual oil changes but only you can check that on the service history. Plenty of nicer cars about with that budget.
