I wrote 49ers fans, but meant American Football fans.

But you can have a 12 team playoff with either a 16 or 17 game season, and can also have a 14 team play-off after 16 or 17 games. Totally independent things. (e.g., last season was just 16 games with 14 teams in play-offs).

I doubt they'll move back from 17 games now - the owners will quickly get used to the extra money that is coming from an extra home game every second year, and the lower tier players probably appreciate the extra money also. And I suspect the TV companies really like the extra matchups as they are 'novel' matchups which previously only took place once every 4 years.

14 team play-off might be more vulnerable, though I guess eventually a good team will get the #7 seed and progress to SB and that might cement it.

Funny, it was my first thought as well as to how often this would correspond with Conference Championship Sunday. But unfortunately as you say the answer seems to be 'never'. At least we can stay up and enjoy the Pro-Bowl !!

They could still have 18 weeks and each team playing 16 games with 2 bye weeks, not as many games each week but much better for players and networks get just as many gameweeks. Also more balanced with 8 home/8 Road games.

They won't do this though because it makes too much sense.

I'd have thought (possibly wrongly) that the 17th game would be supported by the majority of the players. Obviously not the high-profile ones admittedly. But for the low-tier players who earn $150K a game it seems to be a no-brainer, and these players outnumber the $40M players.

It's even better for the players a level below that, practise squad and free-agency flotsam - it gives them an extra chance of stepping up to be a starter or get some minutes.

As for the networks being as happy with 16 games spread over 18 weeks, I think you are wrong there. The 17th game leads to some very sexy match-ups which otherwise wouldn't happen. Looking at next season there's potential SB rematches like Bills@Rams, Chiefs@Bucs and Titans@Packers. Even if they aren't SB re-matches these games look very likely for late game Sunday slots.

Not a chance they go back to 16 games, the number of games is going up again if anything. The majority of fans want more games, the majority of players want more games, everyone in TV want more games - as it means they can get more viewers and more ad money.

As for playoffs, again I can only see the number going up so everyone plays in the first round of the playoffs. Byes tilt things far, far too much towards the number 1 seeds and it quite frequently just rewards teams just being in a weak division. The number 1 seed being guaranteed home games and playing the lowest seeds for the rest of the playoffs is more than enough incentive (as we already see in the NFL for the other spots and in basically every other sport).

Yeah it probably doesn't matter much to the NFL that the wild card games were so one sided, people are going to tune in for them anyway. Any NFL game is insanely profitable so they'll only ever do more

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,613 ✭✭✭Shedite27

Yeah the extra games were crap but they weremoney for nothing for the NFL. The Chiefs and Bucs were the two games that would have had byes otherwise, so whatever extra TV and ticket revenue they got from those games would have been zero otherwise.

Yea there's no way the NFL are getting rid of any extra game - either in the playoffs or regular season. It's money for jam. There'll sooner be more games than less.

Anyone got any experience of organizing game tickets for a group? Planning to go to a Saints home game in Oct/Nov 2022.

Cannot do much until schedule is released but would like to start doing some research in advance (Saints generally get close to capacity for home games, it may be difficult)

Flores has put in some chaos into the NFL. 3 main allegations I can see.

Ross tried to get him to interfere with a qb from a different team. Presumably Watson, which would contrary to the stories the Dolphins have put out since Flores departure.

Ross offered him money to tank. They had an obvious tank season and Flores won a few games with them. This would have massive waves in the betting businesses who represent a lot of cash.

Finally that the Giants job had been decided on before his interview showing that were not following the Rooney rule. This had some texts from Belichek congratulating Flores, presumably someone mentioned Brian to him and he got mixed up? I have not seen evidence for the other 2 yet but we will see were this goes.

Cant really see this going anywhere.

The first 2 allegations will probably come down to Flores word against Ross, unless either a 3rd party comes forward to back up Flores or Flores has some written proof (which is probably unlikely)

As for the text message, Belicheck will just claim that he texted Flores by mistake.

Belichek will have to say what he meant to text. It was obviously a mistake but Bill had to be mistaken that the job had been decided on for it not to be an issue.

It seems a crazy idea to sue mfl ownership given his career if he's not been given some assurance that he has a case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,942 ✭✭✭el Fenomeno

You have to give massive kudos to Flores for turning down both the chance to recruit Tom Brady, and to be rewarded financially for securing the first overall draft pick.

You'd like to think all coaches would do the same, but it's very unlikely. His morals seem concrete.

The Washington Football Team are no more.

Washington Commanders have begun their inevitable reign of failure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,112 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Sounds like an XFL team now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

Like most of brand updates, random internet posters did a better job for free than these marketing agencies did with this.

Terrible name, far worse than the suggestions floating around in 2020, but infinity better than American commentators referring to them as "the Football Team" in the same way they'd say the Seahawks or the Patriots etc. Happy that era is over!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,733 ✭✭✭MileHighGuy

I have to say, I quite liked the Football Team, but that was never going to sell merchandise.

Yes, the Washington Commanders has a terrible ring to it. Quite USFLish.

Happy 4th anniversary of the Eagles winning the super bowl. What a night as an eagles fan. It’s one I will never forget.
