12 teams I'd have thought was a good number for a 22 round Home + Away series, maybe they didn't want to go down that road because of all the travel

The format is pretty close to the old Pro14 format in that:

The competition structure for Super Rugby Pacific is as follows:

    • 12 teams (alphabetical order) with Blues, Brumbies, Chiefs, Crusaders, Fijian Drua, Highlanders, Hurricanes, Melbourne Rebels, Moana Pasifika, NSW Waratahs, Queensland Reds, Western Force
    • 18-week competition window from 18 Feb to 18 June 2022 and 24 February to 24 June 2023
    • 91 matches in total
    • Teams will play 14 regular season matches with each team to host seven matches
    • Teams will play 8 teams once and 3 teams twice with a focus on derby matches
    • One competition table with teams ranked 1 to 12 based on competition points
    • Three-week playoff format involving the top eight teams on the overall competition table with quarters, semis and final as follows:
    • Final – top-ranked semi-final winner hosts the other semi-final winner
    • Semi-Finals – top-ranked quarter-final winner hosts against lowest-ranked quarter-final winner & 2nd highest ranked quarterfinal winner hosts 3rd highest ranked winner
    • Quarterfinals – 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 with the top-ranked team hosting

The derby game set ups are interesting for Fiji Drua and Moana Pacifica

for example Moana play Chiefs, Blue and Crusades twice (ouch)

while Drua play Waratahs, Brumbies and Rebels twice

Blues play, moana, highlanders and chiefs twice... which is probably the easiest draw they could have gotten

so while not exactly meritocratic, id imagine these derbies will be spread around in the coming years so over time they will balance out.

oh, and the only way to view this legally in ireland / UK is on Amazon prime :D

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,497 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

    When was that announced?

The Sanzaar website has no U.K./Irish broadcaster listed, last year we got a last minute deal with RugbyPass for the NZ/Trans-Tasman legs with the Australian games on World Rugby’s website. Clearly that was a one off arrangement, but I would have thought that with the Rugby Championship gone back to Sky this would have went there too.

That's good, hopefully prime keep the no-commentator option, watching the Autumn internationals last year was heavenly

subject to change of course, but currently amazon prime is the broadcaster for ireland / UK

im not sure if rugby pass will be included as a streaming option, given that prime is a streaming service itself, and id imagine would have exclusivity

I think that’s coming from here?

    https://www.rugby.com.au/watch

Possible a gun may have been jumped by Rugby AU as there’s been no official announcement as of yet although it seems Sky don’t have the rights. Good spot if true though.

    SUPER RUGBY MOVES TO QUEENSTOWN

The six New Zealand based Super Rugby Clubs, working with New Zealand Rugby and New Zealand Rugby Players Association have agreed to move into a Queenstown bubble from Tuesday 8 February. We believe this is the most practical way to operate given the high infection risk posed by COVID/ Omicron and in the current public health settings.

This bubble set-up will also allow us to go some way to fulfilling our obligations to broadcast, commercial and other partners, and allow fans to enjoy Super Rugby Pacific 2022.

It is expected that this bubble will last until the completion of round 3 at which time teams will return to their home cities and venues for the remainder of the competition.

Looks like it’s not Amazon after all, seems to be a similar deal to last year but streaming on a dedicated Sanzaar player rather than on RugbyPass. Seems to be priced at £50 Sterling.

I wonder are the matches stored on their to watch later? 50 quid isnt bad but the time zone really limits watching

40 : 10 to the Tahs. Not a great look. People constantly bitch about the massive mismatches in the URC but its in every league

Quite a typical first game of season there with both sides very rusty. Lots of errors and poor discipline but not a terrible game overall.

Not a whole lot between either team but Chiefs were clinical with the opportunities they had while Highlanders, like much of last season, had no composure in the 22 and threw away numerous chances. Can't judge too much off one game but I worry they'll struggle this season especially with Nareki missing and some big players gone.

Loved the backdrop to the stadium
