Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Ive a feeling it will become a normal illness eventually - feel sick, take a test, if it's positive you isolate and take a pill to treat the illness. Booster vaccines available to those who want them, life goes on hopefully

    It will get to the level of the flu, with options for vaccination and treatment when you catch it. How long that will take, who knows but that looks to be the current trajectory.

    There will be longer term societal impacts such as mask wearing will become the norm if you are feeling ill. This happened in many Asian countries after they had various outbreaks in the early 2000's.

    I genuinely believe it's more of a question of when will we get bored of it?

    The illness itself is extremely mild and we could have easily removed all restrictions 10 months ago and things would be grand.

    But is the appetite there? Do government want to return to housing crisis? Do NPHET want the day jobs back? Do Garda and healthcare want nightlife back? Do office workers want to go back to the office? Do the media want to find stories to report on?

    If all the above had been taxed heavily to pay for this the attitude would be a lot different.

    Overpopulation is a biggie, but it's actually food production that has caused the majority of pandemic viruses. It's why when Europeans went to the Americas they brought a load of killer viruses with them, but brought none back(with the possible exception of syphilis). The various American civilisations didn't have pigs, cattle, ducks, chickens etc living on top of each other and people with wilderness nearby. If you wanted to build an "organic" killer virus lab on the cheap an East Asian wet market mixing wild and intensively farmed meat in a subtropical densely populated area would do the trick. Just leave to simmer...

    And somebody in the masking thread took the huge amount of cases as a sign that masks don't work.


    But this is alot of chippers and kitchens which are visible to the public. The management in my own company are still going on about distancing. The managers even sit in their shared office maskless because we still seem to be stuck on the 2020 advice of distancing. It should be about masks, the ffp2 kind and ventilation.
