This reminds me of the thread you started last year (or the year before) for your top 5 and to provide an explanation for each, that was a cracker of a thread, must go back & try and find it for a re-read (oh for old boards where that would have been easy!)

Was thinking that when I replied yesterday. We have had some great threads over the last couple of years to add to the all time classics like Christmas Eve traditions.

The movies one was brilliant, some great banter and just a shame the best movie didn't win (hint it was on last night!!).

It's not Fairy tale of New York and nothing to do with the 'controversial' lyrics. The song makes sense in the context of simpler times when perhaps the world was less cynical but we've had 30 years of the unidyllic Christmas in our culture, films, music etc. all deal with the idea that yeah I'm meant to be happy but it's just another day. I loved this song and still do like it at the odd time but whenever it's brought up people talk about how it's a realistic portrayal of Christmas and how for a lot of people Christmas is a sad time. I don't know what people thought 40 years ago but certainly today we're a lot more jaded and cynical. The song is not a breath of fresh air, if anything we need more simple basic happy Christmas songs which just create a sense of magic and wonder. Sometimes we need escapism but all FONY does is romanticize hardship. I recommend Bieber's 2012 Christmas album. He has a great little tune with Boyz 2 Men.
