Whining noise - 1.8 Petrol Avensis Valvematic

Hi,

A few days ago a whining noise started coming from engine of my car. Still seems to drive ok but do not like the sound of it at all. Anyone hazard a guess what it might be? Hopefully it is audible in linked video.

Fuel pump related perhaps. Alternatively check the air filter, have you had a look at that? Check the hoses to see if any around the air filter are loose.

Alternator maybe. You could eliminate some components by removing any belts one at a time. Not sure about your particular engine but the belts would typically drive the alternator, aircon pump, water pump, power steering, and a tensioner pulley.

Depends what the noise is, if it's constant I'd check belts as above. If it modulates then it could be a crack in your turbo hose.

I wouldn't be qualified to try removing belts myself. Just hoping to get an idea as won't get to the mechanic for another few days and hoping it's not something serious.

Yeah it goes up with the revs. When cruising at a higher gear it's not as audible. I don't think there is a turbo in these engines however.

Started Wednesday haven't driven it half hour continuous since only round town 5 to 15 mins slow driving. I will update when I do though.

Looks like you may have been right. Power steering went this evening then the radio cut out just as I pulled into the drive. Battery dead now so I presume it was the alternator or the belts driving it? Either way looks like I'll have to get the car towed now.

Sounds like the alternator so. Or you could be lucky and it's only the battery. Either way it should be possible to check with a voltmeter with the engine running.

I think the power steering on petrol Avensis's are electric which would be why yours went.

Yeah I would think with the sudden onset of the whining noise last week it's likely to be the alternator I think. Presuming not that cheap of fix. Battery is about 3 years old.
