Cycle Routes from South Dublin

Hi all,

I'll soon be spending more time in Dublin having been away a long time. I think I'll be based in Blackrock so I'm looking for some advice or routes on how best to get out of the city into the Wicklow mountains. I am originally from the Northside and still have a lot of family there so I'd also appreciate some routes for that part of the world too. I do remember that Naomh Barrog cycle club used to have a load of Stava routes on their website but they don't seem to any more.

Also, if anyone has a good route to get me to the cycleable bit of the Royal Canal from any part of the city (avoiding the parts around Castleknock) I'd appreciate that too.

Finally, are there any cycle clubs based around South Dublin who run social spins for potential new memebers?

there'll be plenty who know better how to get into the mountains from blackrock, but i suspect up newtownpark avenue and past the business parks - and either swing left then (enniskerry road or ballyedmonduff road) heading south for the turnoff for the sally gap say; or head straight on, past lamb doyles and the back of marlay park, so you could then head in the direction of rockbrook and make a swing back towards glencullen, or head for the military road which would allow you head south for the sally gap from that direction, or bohernabreena if you continued a little further east?

The Royal Canal - best way is to go through the Phoenix Park to Ashtown Gate and cycle from there; there's a bit between Castleknock and Coolmine not yet cyclable in any real sense (the Deep Sinking), but after that you can head happily across the country. Or you can take your bike on the train to Coolmine and go from there.

You could also head south Deansgrange - N11 - Loughlinstown and then up to the scalp.

As for clubs with social spins - Bray Wheelers have a good few members that direction, spins depart the clubhouse (with parking). braywheelers@gmail.com
