More potential for thunderstorm activity tomorrow as the upper trough becomes more negatively tilted, soundings showing pockets of up around 300 to 400 J/kg possible more in the Western half of the country but will they mature as they move inland towards the East again where sunshine levels should improve into the afternoon . Hail showers possible again tomorrow. Heavy showers along coastal counties.

Brief thunderstorm rolled over South Kilkenny and Waterford earlier. The lightning was more north but I got a good view of it from Tramore

We will see if thunderstorms form tonight along Atlantic coasts and if they move inland a bit. Maybe in the NW this afternoon a chance for a few isolated storms moving inland. Also the NW might produce the most lightning tonight if it martializes but could get some activity down along Western coasts. Looks like some heavy showers moving in off the coasts later this evening and overnight, possibly a chance of some hail mixed in as well. Nice cool upper pool moving over the warm sea and Orographic lift might aid some of the convection to become electrified in off toe coasts. Tomorrow better chance overland for isolated storms, plenty of low shear and a decent amount of deep layer shear available giving good lapse rates. Some very heavy showers look possible tomorrow, more so the Western half of the country.

Some high rainfall projections along coastal regions leading into Sunday.

    Day 1 Convective Outlook

    VALID 06:00 UTC Sat 02 Oct 2021 - 05:59 UTC Sun 03 Oct 2021

    ISSUED 07:26 UTC Sat 02 Oct 2021

    ISSUED BY: Dan

Large, initially positively-tilted, upper trough covers the UK and Ireland on Saturday, its axis to the west over the Atlantic. Through the forecast period the trough will become increasingly negatively-tilted, while its centre remains anchored broadly to the northwest of Scotland. On its forward side, a strong jet will drive a deepening surface low northeastwards from the English Channel across England and to the North Sea, to become centred near Shetland by 06z Sunday. A notably high Theta-W airmass will be associated with this low, as subtropical air is advected northwards on its eastern flank. Widespread rain will spread northeastwards across many parts of Britain - however, forecast profiles reveal a mid-level warm bulge (around 700-750mb) that may encourage embedded elevated convection to occur. As such, some sporadic lightning and very heavy rain will be possible in a SW-NE zone from the Channel Islands and English Channel across Cen S / SE England by late afternoon and towards East Anglia during the evening. The convective potential is highly sensitive to the exact thermodynamic profile, which varies amongst model guidance, and not least complicated by rather saturated profiles. Therefore confidence is low as to whether much lightning will occur, despite some very heavy rain in places. Dry air wrapping around the deep low over the North Sea could result in an uptick in lightning activity close to Orkney/Shetland late in the night.

Elsewhere, the focus for lightning will be primarily related to sea-driven convection, fuelled by warm SSTs as showers move inland. Exposed western coasts are most prone to a few isolated lightning strikes, although exactly where these may occur is very uncertain and the risk in any one location is considered rather low. Perhaps a slightly better environment in western Ireland during the night hours (where a low-end SLGT has been issued), and towards dawn over Cumbria.

Even with all the clouds and power showers around this last week, it has been extremely sunny. Showers don't last long and any clouds blocking the sun blow away quickly.

    New Moon

Great cloudscapes and sunny spells with quick moving heavy showers here in Kerry but only a couple of sferics across the country showing up in the early hours. Not enough instability to get things fired up it would seem. Didn't see any reports of hail either . Hard to get a bit of lightning this year!

Thunder warnings removed earlier in the day, replaced by rain warnings with just a "risk of thunderstorms"

Radar returns look unexceptional. Convective weather seem to think the odd lightning strike is possible over the entire British Isles, but hopes don't appear to be high.

I've never quite understood the use of the term "thundery rain" in this country. Met Éireann above mentioned "thundery rain with possible lightning". If there's thunder then there's always lightning. Not sure when we can get thunder without lightning, unless they're purely talking about CG strikes and differentiating between elevated and lower convection. But sometimes they seem to use thundery to just mean "heavy", which is nonsense.

We got no thunder and no high winds as forecast in Galway bit windy but nothing like I expected

Quite a bit of thunder and lightning in Kerry tonight. Heard a lot of thunder earlier and the lads coming home in the car saw 6 huge flashes. Big blustery wintry showers of hail and sleet, don't have wind readings atm but Ballybunion Buoy was gusting up to 60 kts short time ago probably gusting up around 40 kts here at times, had to drop the basketball stand and secure a few items. Mountains bound to have a white cap on them in the morning.
