So tax payers who are now struggling to get a builder won't be able to get one at all!

Or maybe the compulsory state building employees will just throw a lot of sickies, so they have enough time for all their nixers.

    Clever.

Ah yes, lets round up all the brick layers in the country and force them to work for a new state agency whether they want to or not.

Whats next. Maybe we should force landlords to continue as landlords whether they want to or not.

...... I guess anything is possible in a "crisis".

We cant just ignore individual freedoms. The Crisis is not a license to do anything to any group without a timescale and without considering all alternatives.

This isn't a solution; it's an extemporaneous speal that only a academic could dream up.

Where are the materials going to come from? Where is the money to fund this to come from? How can "ever tradesman and builder" be persuaded to do this? Where will the land come from?

Be wary of any sentence that begins thus: "The government needs to..."

I think I heard a bit of that on the radio. The first thought that immediately came to mind, in relation to the efficiency, was that the frequency with which public sector houses are frequently boarded up for 6+ months between tenants because they are so slow at "renovating" them in between.

Sounds like a great idea putting the same lads in charge of all the houses ......................

I predict that the public service will deliver 100 apartments within ten years at the low-low cost to the taxpayer of only about 3 million per unit. Oh, also the building inspector assigned was retiring, so the concrete used could possibly be full of sawdust, but fire will not be an issue as damp will cancel it out.

there is only one solution councils build long term rental social housing, which in turn takes the pressure of the private sector and reduces rent

    but that aint gonna happen

The solution is quite simple. The market requires investment from developers and private markets. This is never going to happen while draconian laws favouring tenants are left in place. Nor will developers flood the market whilst they are told they have to build a percentage for social housing.

Easiest solution do away with the ridiculous tenancy laws, Non payment of rent after 21 days gets a 21 day to comply notice. Failure to comply means eviction at 42 days notice landlords change locks and place possessions on front lawn. Overholds are forcibly removed. It is not the responsibility of landlords to accommodate them for their lifestyle choices.

Developers should be able to build without social housing allocations. In turn prices come down as more property becomes available and developers don't overcharge on properties to retrieve losses of having to sell to local authorities.

Government wanting houses for social houses build their own estates. Social housing should always have a stigma attached to it, motivation for people to improve their circumstances and improve their quality of life.

No person working should be supplemented or housed in social housing, live where you can afford and not where you aspire to.

That's how you fix a housing crisis.

So let me get this right.

Government want to hire all builders and drive prices sky high for tax payers.

Government want to use tax payers own money to screw them.

Government want to use taxpayers own money to bid against them on second hand houses, and new houses too.

The tax payers ass hole must be wider than the Shannon estuary at this point.

No, reread the post it was a rather daft suggestion from a lecturer in social science from Maynooth University, who is a commentator on the housing issue.
