Laying new yard - consideration for future electric vehicles

Hi,

We are putting down a yard in parents new build house and I was going to put in an underground duct from garage (where the power enters the property) out to the yard wall in front of where the cars park for when in future that electric cars are mandated. The intent of this is to ensure that we don't have to dig up the yard in order to put a charging cable across or have cables trailing across the yard to the vehicles.

It is not a big job at this stage to do. Is this all that would be required at this stage - was looking at a 4" duct - can't see the cabling being an issue in it.

A 4" will make life much easier when pulling cables - put a rope in it now though, will make pulling a new cable much easier.

It would be a 6mm2 armoured going to a charge point, (maybe 10mm2 if the run is very long)

Run at least two etnernet cables also alongside rope, cheap so no problem laying them now, or else you can pull via rope later.

Beware of bend on 6mm cable if choosing armoured

This will all be years down the line, so hopefully just putting in the duct will be sufficient at this point - its cheaper and easer to do it now rather than dig up the ground again. Although by that stage wireless charging will probably be all the rage anyway!

Thanks - at least I know I'm on the right track putting in 4" smooth walled drainage pipe as a duct. That should prevent water accumulating in it too.

How are these typically wired in the house - can they be connected via spur from an existing socket or do they require their own circuit from the consumer unit?

Use the slow angle bend esb service duct where it exits to ensure future proofing.

I'm laying new frontway next week, have SWA ethernet and SWA 6sq ready to lay myself, also got a box steel pedestal to move charge point as we're currently doing Tetris given we've two EVs, will post pics

Thanks - we're just future proofing, so nothing to put into the ducting yet. What diameter is your ducting?

No ducting, all cable Steel Armoured so no ducting required

The car will pull 32a from the house.

Would you not be better print it in ducting in case you want to change or alter things if it gets damaged? What sizes cables are going in again?

I already have a charge point so moving it to a more centred position as we are a two EV house, won't be moving ever again.

As the cables are SWA there will be no damage, 6sq SWA for power and buriable CAT6 for comms

I put in 50mm inner diameter ducting. Should hopefully be enough.

There's regulations for burying electrical cable and I don't think your idea meets them. If doing it do it right, especially since you want to avoid digging up the yard.

What charger do you have? Looks like a pretty elaborate stand

Both of mine are currently attached to the wall in the side passage, it works but the cable is a slight stretch going to the far space

We've rarely had to charge both EVs at the same time anyway but it's nice to have the capability if needed

If I'm every getting the driveway dug up then I'll definitely be putting in ducting to bring the chargers out to the sides of the driveway

Nice, I've a Zappi v2 as well. Agree that it you're going to put it on a stand then might as well make it look decent, since the charger is a bit of a chunky one anyway

Armoured or not, I think it foolish not to duct if doing a concrete yard.

You never know what can happen. If someone was to go in breaking concrete for some reason and destroyed your cable, you are fecked.
