City council introduces new rules on signs in public areas.

Galway City Council has introduced new rules for putting up temporary signs in the city for the summer.

In order to put up temporary signs in public areas promoting charity, sporting and cultural events, a permit will now be required.

The application for a permit must be made a minimum of four weeks in advance of the event taking place.

Derek Healy from the city council said “The aim of this policy is to support good, creative and necessary signage in appropriate locations.”

“It is also to ensure that the overall presentation of the city and the image which it portrays to residents, visitors and potential investors is not negatively affected by inappropriate and unauthorised signage”.

Signs may also not be put up in within specified city centre areas, on any lighting or ESB poles, and may not block any road signage or traffic lights.

Event will be restricted to putting up a maximum of 50 signs, which must be removed immediately afterwards.

These rules also apply to signage being put up on private property which are visible from a public place.

It's been happening for a number of years in Roscommon. Groups etc pay a refundable bond of €120 I think and get to leave their signs up for a specific time. No. of signs, locations, dates etc are all applied for.

You get your money back when everything is removed as verified by council environment staff. It's a good system afaic.

I hate those election posters as much as you. Did a bit of digging the last election and it turns out that there's actually a lot of rules regarding this.

There's no limit on numbers though is there? Just height above ground (they often slip down though) and strict rules when they can start going up and about removal after the election. You'll often see the same sign repeated on every lamp post on the road. An agreed limit on signs would be welcome - allow new faces some exposure while limiting the party machines from covering the city. Anyway, the turkeys are unlikely to vote for Christmas.

FYI, if you are giving direction as a mod, on the new boards, you need to make it clear as on the desktop version you look like a normal user as user groups are only listed for the first user on a thread
