If a transmission is noisy and whining due to worn bearings will the problem become progressively worse but not affect the actual driving or could the box just suddenly "blow up" and fail completely?

It may eventually lock up which is dangerous

An oil change might quieten it for a while.

I had bearings fail before and when they did I pulled over because of grinding noise like a under tray was rubbing off tyre . Then car would not come out of gear.
