Depends on whether you are doing a market or limit order. It also depends on the stock/market I'd imagine (i.e. a lightly traded stock on a quiet market might take some time, but you should be avoiding these if you are new anyway). Assuming a big cap stock on a lively market:- on a market order, it is pretty instant, maybe a few seconds. On a limit order, you are obviously waiting until the limit is reached which could be seconds, minutes, hours, days or never!
