Cork Harbour bus crash - 2 fatalies (Bus driver & Priest) & 1 child injured

    There was some distressing news going around on the news wires today that there was a freak accident involving a Bus Eireann single deck bus on the 216 route in Cork. The Cork Examiner reported this evening that the deceased bus driver in his 50's had suffered from a medical trauma while he was at the steering wheel of the bus. He then crashed it into some parked cars at Cork Harbour causing one fatality. A priest from the diocese of Cork & Ross was hit by the bus & killed instantly.

    One child was also left injured in the accident.

    The priest killed in the accident has been named above as Fr Con Cronin. He went viral for doing a Fortnite floss dance at a communion ceremony in 2019.

    He also appeared on the RTÉ Documentary; The Confessors which was aired on RTÉ One from last year.

    The Bus Eireann driver who was killed in the accident at Cork Harbour today has not been officially named yet by the operator. However BÉ did release a statement today to say that the driver was "a long-standing and greatly valued employee" based at the Capwell depot in Cork city. He was driving a Mercedes Citaro bus before he was killed in the accident.

    Either way; this is a terrible tragedy for the people of Cork. It is very sad news for people in the community who live near the harbour.

    RIP to all who were killed. I hope the child goes well with recovering from the injuries.

    One of those freak accidents. Very hard for all involved.

    Rip to the 2 people who died. Hopefully the child will be ok

    Thankfully the child had very minor injuries as her dad pulled her away. But the trauma for them and the sacrisant must be numbing.


    Driver is said to be in their 50's, so quite young.


    Not exactly the right comment with two deaths, but it could have been a lot worse

    Irish Times have named the driver as and suggested that he may have had a heart attack that led to him being incapacitated and the subsequent accident.

    I never liked the words 'lost control' in these contexts, because it sounds like he didn't lose control, but his health prevented him from controlling the vehicle.

    Looks like the driver got a heart attack behind the wheel. Such a terrible accident that couldn’t have been prevented

    A terrible tragedy, RIP to both.

    My thoughts go out to all those involved (most have been a shock too to the passengers on board and nearby pedestrians) and to the family, colleagues and friends of them both.
