Just witnessed the formation of a tornado at 1630 today, around Annaghdown, Co. Galway.

Small white whispy tendril first, then dark grey twisted tube grew and extended down, no clue of distance. Dissipated after approx. 5mins. Couldn't believe our eyes.

Is there any stats on tornadoes here?

There is a photo of a funnel cloud over on the Thunderstorms thread - posted by someone from near the Corrib Lake.

I saw very similar to the above pic out by carnmore last year, very wispy and didn't last long but definitely a funnel. was driving at the time, disgusted as I couldn't take a photo.

Quite common, Ireland has a high number of funnel clouds for our landmass size.

BTW, they are funnel clouds until they touch the ground. Then they're tornadoes.

The UK has more tornadoes per sq. km than any other country in the world.
