What to look out for in an Octavia.

    Looking at picking up a second hand Octavia.
    Budget is max 3k€.
    I've always known the 1.9 TDI to be a reliable work horse but I've seen there's a few 1.6 TDI.
    Are 1.6 TDI as reliable?

    Also what kind of issues are to look out for in these?

    Range of years I've seen on done deal , 05-10 models.

    No matter how reliable the 1.9 is now old and possibly hard to come by a good one.. but yes I'd also prefer a 1.9 compared to the newer 1.6..
    Your budget is very low otherwise you could go for a 2litre. They never gave the common faults like injectors etc in the 1.6

    From my own experience of the 1.6tdi in a polo I wouldn't go near one again. 2 injectors gave trouble, egr valve packed it in. Anti shudder valve gave some trouble but no biggie car still ran and idled fine. Most people in my circle who have owned something with the 1.6tdi has either had injectors or egr valves replaced.

    Have the VAG 1.6tdi in my Seat Leon and had to have injectors replaced

    after 70k km


    Having said that the specialist who repaired it said that there were two types of injectors on the VAG 1.6tdi and the bosch ones tended to last - not sure which are in the Skoda

    I was looking at Octavias of similar age about 2 years ago. I bought a 09 1.9 Octavia with elegance trim level.
    Spec wise: Skoda gave the Octavia a facelift in 2009 with different lights, bumpers, Bolero radio, steering wheel and few other things, you will notice the difference as the facelift models have Octavia written into the headlights. The basic Octavia dont have steering wheel controls, blue tooth or air con. For me i wanted a model that had bluetooth.
    Engine wise: I drove both the 1.9 and 1.6. The 1.9 to me has a more linear acceleration whereas the 1.6 you can feel the turbo kick.
    Around 2009/2010 is when DPF were introduced to most cars in Ireland. Most of the 1.6 engine have DPFs fitted whereas only some of the 1.9s have DPFs. I believe the location of the DPF and EGR valve on the 1.6 engine are at the back of the engine and not that easy for access working on. The 1.9 BXE engine can have a tendency to throw conrods but 50k Km in, mine is going good.
    There is a 2 litre 140bhp engine with a 6 speed gearbox similiar to the VRS models but but its a rare find in the standard models.
    Economy wise: im getting about 17km/l or 48 mpg.
    weaknesses: ive noticed with mine is the brake calipers and suspension components seem to be a little softer than the toyota avensis i had before.

    Bought a new Octavia 1.6tdi in 2011.
    Excluding the usual brake pads, oil and filter changes which I do myself, the total repair/maintenance cost in 10 years was/is 60 euros to Amazon for a replacement brake caliper, so I can't complain.

    I have a 2012 skoda 1.6tdi elegance for five years, never gave an ounce of trouble. Currently 230,000 KM and got the timing belt done at 210,000. Brand new two year NCT on it now.

    Friend has a 2011 1.6tdi elegance and never had an ounce of trouble either with it.

    There actually great cars and the 1.6TDI is actually nippy

    Both of us were changing our cars around the same time and another friend who is a Volkswagen/Skoda mechanic told us to go with these.

    Honestly great cars around these years.
