    Okay, lets do this! :D

    The rules:

    1. No covers, originals only
    2. The song is to be released anytime before the year 2000
    3. You may nominate as many songs as you like

We will leave things at the nomination stage for a while, get plenty of songs in. :)

When a Child is Born - number 1 when I was born :D

    A Winter's Tale - I've a soft spot for this one

Last Christmas - I wouldn't have given George's heart away

The Little Drummer Boy (Bowie and Bing Crosby) - I love this!!

Driving Home for Christmas - story of my life!!

That's my first batch, more to follow I'm sure!

Its the most wonderful time of the year - Andy Williams

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas - Bing Crosby ( I know technically Perry Como released his version first but this is the best selling version so thought it was the best option to choose)

Fairytale of New York - The Pogues & Kirsty McColl

Do they know its Christmas - Band Aid (1984)

Step Into Christmas - Elton John

I believe in Father Christmas - Greg Lake

The power of love - Frankie goes to hollywood

    Last Christmas - Wham

Walking in the Air (from the Snowman)

    * Interestingly, the rules exclude Only You by the Flying Pickets !

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

Rocking Around the Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee

    * I guess I have to nominate the original as the rules mean I can't nominate Kim Wilde and I'm quite upset about that

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

A Spaceman Came Travelling - Chris de Burgh

Stop the Cavalery - Jona Lewie

And my all time favourite - Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy - David Bowie & Bing Crosbie

With you there, much prefer the Kim Wilde version.

    A few more...

Little drummer boy/peace on earth - David Bowie & Bing Crosby

    Merry Christmas everybody - Slade

Driving home for christmas - Chris Rea

    White Christmas - Bing Crosby

Have yourself a merry little christmas - Judy Garland

Alone for Christmas - Darlene Love.

I'll Be Home for Christmas - Bing Crosby

A rather poignant song given that it was written in 1943 to honor soldiers overseas who longed to be home at Christmas time.

We could nearly have a side contest for best cover version of a christmas classic!
For the 1940s & 1950s standards whose originals have dated a bit in terms of the music.

Ultimate favourite pre 2000 Christmas song would have to be Darlene Love's Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home).
Nominations also for Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry, Last Christmas by Wham, Mary's Boy Child by Boney M, Lonely this Christmas by Mud, Band Aid Do they know it's Christmas?, War is Over by John Lennon, Step into Christmas by Elton John. Love a bit of Macca Wonderful Christmas time also. Peter Auty original Walking in the Air from The Snowman.
And if it counts as a Christmas songs then also Stay Another Day by East 17.

I assume you mean amazing choir. :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 164 ✭✭A cup of te

I'm definitely tuneless, Posy, but it doesn't stop me :-P I always wanted to be in a choir especially singing Christmas songs! Is it my imagination or did a bunch of you elves meet up before one year? (albeit not to sing) I'm thinking flash mob of boards.ie elves in a big park or a wide open space or something so we wouldn't be spreading aerosols and belt out a few carols! Edit: sorry for derailing thread. I'll stop now :-P

Sadly we have never had a forum meet-up!

I would also love to join a choir- I'm waiting until I retire and have more time to dedicate to it. :pac:

Agree. Would be nice to meet some of the people we've been chatting to all these years.

Well, I would definitely be up for meeting if it's a possibility come Christmas time! I don't have too many people in my physical world who share my love of all things Christmas :-)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

Definitely like to meet you nice folk in the flesh. Christmas jumpers on, a nice pub with a roaring fire, Christmas songs on in the background, a few mulled wines :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,033 ✭✭✭✭DvB

Anyway, can we get this thread back on track for pre 2000 christmas song nominations... its been derailed a tad;)

Most def counts... its not in the least anything to do with christmas but we've discussed it here previously & its generally accepted now as a christmas tune.
