Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Add a window to an existing property

    Hi All.


    Maybe this is a silly question, but if I wanted to knock a chunk out of an existing second story wall to put a window in place, do you think I need planning permission. Would this type of modifications raise structural support concerns?

    Depends on which wall. Back should be ok depending on distance to neighbouring properties otherwise planning required. A good builder will sort out the lintels unless it's fairly wide in which case you would need an engineer.

    When your standing at this wall, is it less than or greater than 11m from the boundary wall?

    Hi Gumbo.


    The window would be at a distance less than 11 m.



    I'd be hoping to place the window on the second floor of the left side of the house. The second floor is a converted attic, so the top of the side wall has a triangle shape as it aligns with the roof shape.
