    Hi!

    Long a$$ thread title.

We badly need a 2nd vehicle for my fiance when I'm not around, and we've bought a house near the ocean so we've been kayaking and surfing a lot more and we are gonna ruin the new car putting kayaks and surf boards on the roof constantly.

So I need something will fit a cheap roof rack, thinking something fairly popular, that has good room for a dog or 2 inside, cheap to tax so looking for under 1.4, but reliable too, budget of up to 4k.

I'm leaning towards a small to medium size van as I'd love to have the option of throwing a mattress in the bag if we ever wanted to tour around, open to any suggestions!

I think you need to decide first if you want a car or a van :)

If you decided to go for a car then an estate is naturally going to be your best bet. You can't go wrong with an Octavia. Biggest in the class and they sold well so you should have a few options.

The 1.4 max engine makes little choice
Id say these fit a mattress in the back with seats folded. And still loads of room in the back with 7 seats up. Also a sunken space in the boot

Not pretty do are they. Even the dash is so bland and I have heard of airbags not going off in them in a crash.

A Skoda Octavia estate or a Superb are so much nicer.
A Citroen C5 estate is another fine estate and should not be too expensive or to hard to find one. Just make sure all the paper work is correct and there and it's a fine big car.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Any opinions on an Opel Combo?

Any commercial vehicle you choose will have implications for insurance, you’re much better off getting a car version of a van.

    Opel Combo Life
    Ford Tourneo Connect
    Citroen Berlingo Multispace
    Peugeot Partner Tepee
    Renault Kangoo Kar
    VW Caddy Life
    VW Caravelle

These can all be taxed and insured as a car.
