I didn't need to, no. The Crime Prevention officer will more than likely want to come out and inspect your security if it's your first license application. But there's no need to attach any proof of purchase of your safe to your application.

Do I need to attach a letter from the person I’m getting the gun off to my firearms application.

If the firearm is in a guns dealers then he will give you a receipt for it, their details will be on that receipt.

Enter thier details into section -

    3.3 Source of Firearm (A)

If it's from a private source, then enter thier details into section -

    3.3 Source of Firearm (B)

Generally the only documents you need to inculde with your application are -
    • Passport Photo x 1
    • Land Permission or Letter from Gun Club / Proof of Range Membership
    • Competency Cert (if required)

    Paddy.

Most RFD's will give you two (2) pieces of paper, one is an actual purchase/deposit receipt for yourself.

The second is a sheet/note showing the firearm details, incl the RFD's address and Pulse number.

As previousely stated, purchase receipt is for yourself, just put the firearm details on your application form, I normally also attach a copy of this sheet.

On average how long does it take for a superintendent to issue you a licence after you hand in your application if it is granted?

I dropped one in one the 20th last month and the letter arrived today but dated the 19th. My FO seems to be on the ball though. I’d advise heading to the main station, I’ve heard a story or two about lads dropping it to their local station and ringing the FO a couple of months later and it hasn’t landed on their desk.

First they came for the socialists...

This is how fuked up this system can be.
Don't bother dropping it into the Dist HQ, unless that happens to be your local station
.They will SEND IT BACK OUT to the outlying station IE your local for your local designated FO to bring it back into the Dist HQ to let it land on the super's IN tray!
Happened to me, I forgot a signature on one application and I thought I'd save time and do everyone a favour to drop it into the dist HQ as I was passing, as that's all that was missing was the sig, and it had been inspected by my local FO and signed off on...
NOPE! The designated FO MUST bring it back as per "da rules and da procedures!" Back out it went and took another 14 days to be processed as the FO was on holidays as well during that time...

    Only in Ireland!!

Not sure what you mean, if it's granted you will be informed by letter usually within a week?
This grant letter is brought to a post office to pay and the license comes within a week or so.

How long it takes to get granted is a different matter with many variables ,

    Only in Ireland!!

"The only in Ireland" thing is something we all think and I'm guilty as much as anyone. But recently I've run into this:

I bought a rifle from a German dealer and as soon as I had the serial number I filled out my FCA1 form and dropped it into my local FO. 24 days later I got my grant letter, next day I took it to the post office and paid my €80.00, 6 days later my certificate arrived in the post. Applied for my import licence online that evening and received it 7 days later. 5 weeks and 3 days all in from nothing to import licence - can't complain about that at all.

Now the bit that shows it's not just "only in Ireland". The dealer I bought the rifle from is now having trouble with getting the export licence from the local German authorities. "The problem is actually the export papers because of the whole Brexit situation and if Ireland belongs to the EU or not."

"I don’t know where the confusion is coming from but we will sort this out with the local authorities. " "German bureaucracy is just what it is"

The authorities that he's dealing with there reckon he's exporting outside the EU because the UK left (Brexit). Seems the jobsworth he's dealing with has a problem understanding that the Republic Of Ireland and the UK are not actually in fact one and the same!

    Even better...

My local station is the District HQ. So inbetween two excellent individuals we were lumbered with a lad who was useless. Even the retired lad who was the previous FO heard how bad this lad was.
My woes centred around a substitution that not only dragged on for months but ran into my renewal time for said firearm. Meanwhile other renewals were popping up. Anyhow I was trying to do this tactfully but eventually rang the Skippers office and got through to his secretary. I asked her should I send it straight to her (the other individual kept insisting I handed the form to him... he asked me to resubmit ...... but was never there to collect it). Her answer was 'No point, as I'll (she) just bring it down the corridor and drop it in his pigeon hole'.

Now having said my piece that was the only time I've had issues with them. As I said the original lad and now the current lad are brilliant, no issues. My mate on the other hand, same district, different station is going through a painfully agonizing time just getting his application processed at local level.

It's not always a conspiracy as in our case the Super doesn't seem to have an issue it's some of the lower ranks that are dropping the ball.

    Paddy Mc Ginn,

You need to read the likes of this and a few other stickies

    http://10point9.ie/how-do-i-apply-for-a-firearms-licence/

Theres also good reference material found here at Garda.ie

    https://www.garda.ie/en/about-us/online-services/firearms-licensing/

If you intend to get into shooting as a pastime then I would advise you to inform yourself as to various laws, regulations and even etiquette etc that come into play wheather its to do with firearm ownership or the wildlife act as it can be very easy to run a foul of various bits of legislation. Remember the burden is on you not the other way around. Theres loads of info in the stickies in the various forums.

From the time that an application was handed in to getting the grant payment letter?
For me anywhere between 2 weeks and 7 months.

And that was including 5 interviews with the Superintendent, 3 interviews with the Chief Superintendent,
and several house inspections from the Crime prevention officer.

    I Have,The .Exact.Same.Problem At.The .Minute! With mine!
Mine is up in the Bochum Wattenscheid area, and its seems that the fool in chief there is taking his sweet damn time due to him never being in the office,or half of his staff being out with Covid,or whatever... So don't feel to bad about it.
Maybe in your case, someone could send Herr Flick an official map of the EU listing the countries therein to educate him?

However, there is also a nice thing in Germany that citizens can do its called a "Beamtenbeschwerde"[Complaint against a govt official] and it is a pretty heavy complaint and taken seriously by dept heads to have on your record. IOW getting one of these is a good reason for them to stop playing with their Bratwursts and get back to work.SCHNELL! So you might mention this to your dealer over.
Be very embarrassing for them that one of theirs cant google and find out whether the ROI is in the EU or not.

Cookie forgot to mention one other thing, Paddy...."Embrace The Suck!" [USMC expression I think]Alot of things in your Irish shooting career will literally suck, and there is nothing much you can do in many cases. So just accept such will happen and deal with it as best possible...Developing a wonderful sense of humour helps immensely.
