Can’t say more than get a Microsoft controller for a Microsoft OS.

Antitrust? Eh probably not. But it just works the best with minimum fuss

Another vote for the Xbox controller. Easily the best one i've ever had, though my One pad has been having drift issues lately. Need to take it apart to try and fix it.

Been using a 360 wired controller for years now and still going strong.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

Didnt like the feel of the One, prefer PS controllers but no official driver for a long time pushed me to the 360s and for simple plug and play, they just work. Wireless ones for couch gaming.

I believe there is an official PS driver now for windows and dont have to use that adware app that mostly worked.

An old friend gave me his old 360 controller in 2013. Still going. Highly recommended.

We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

Excellent thanks lads I reckon I’ll be able to get a 360 controller for next to nothing if I ask around a few mates.

Just spent the last 40 mins trying to get my PC to recognise an xbox one controller, won't work no matter what I try.

I had a similar issue a few months ago, it was actually the Xbox wireless adapter missing the driver.
    Google "8884e7cc-6130-4803-9fc4-6b542f0f2b4e_1080d7146d5022210f192a3897e22f7c7f25caf6.cab"
Download the .cab. There is an offical MS download listed on a reddit post.

Using 7-Zip, right click and extract .cab to folder, 7-Zip might give a error, ignore it.
In the folder right-click on mt7612us_RL.inf and select install.
Restart just to be sure it works.

Kinda crazy that MS doesn't supply some kind of installer for issues like this.

Also, try plugging it into the pc and downloading any updates. Had 360 controllers for years without a hitch but god are the bluetooth controllers a pain.

Are you sure you’ve got one that supports Bluetooth? I believe the earlier versions didn’t.

That's probably it. Worst case just plug it in with a usb micro cable.

Tried with the cable and bluetooth! I have now sourced an xbox 360 controller and associated cable which will hopefully work better.

They normally have a Spring Clean event or something in the latter part of May, I think?

Massive can of worms, But I just want a simple gaming PC.

Mainly play Forza, GTA and Farming Simulator.
Ideally something with half decent graphics and something I can download a few mods onto for GTA. Will venture online aswel.

Don't want to spend stupid money but considering a PS5 or xBox will be €500ish. Would a €1k budget get me a decent PC?

Assume the games are bought from steam? Is virus software needed if everything is downloaded from steam/safe websites?

And I assume I can hook my xbox controller up to it and run it on a standard TV?

Yeah, it's a massive, if not infinitely sized can of worms right now.

Normally, the advise would be to build your own, but the insane prices for GPUs, if one can be found, and elevated prices on other parts, means that buying a pre-build is probably the more feasible option.

All PC video cards have display port and HDMI outputs, so connecting to a TV shouldn't be an issue.

And most XBox controllers should work fine, with some variation depending on whether a bluetooth adapter is needed.

You have a wide choice of stores to buy from, there's no need to restrict yourself to Steam. And plenty of free games from most stores, along with F2P titles.

€1000 is a bit border line, without compromising on some aspect of it. Squeezing that up to €1200 to €1300 would help ensure a balanced machine.

Bad time to be looking for graphics card at a decent normal price.

A Xbox controller will do fine I use one myself and have done so for years.

I use a Tv for gaming also but a 24" monitor for general browsing and just switch over when gaming.

Yep steam is safe to use. I actually do not have any anti virus software for years and I do be on all sorts of websites so you should be fine on that front.

I just use Windows Defender that is built in to Window 10. If you were building yourself and you were able to get a GPU at RRP then €1,000 would be fine. The GPU is the real problem. Your chances of getting one are incredibly low. Getting one at RRP at not stupid money is even lower. Pre-built is probably the best way to go now but your money won't go as far.

    Is something like this
    https://m.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/8861980/Trail/searchtext%3EGaming+pc.htm

Really €400 odd less in terms of specs over this?

    https://www.soundstore.ie/asus-rog-i5-10400-8gb-256gb-ssd-1tb-g15ckuk004t.html

From my naivety it looks to be the same processor, Cheaper one has more storage and more ram. I know the graphics card is a step below..... Im surely missing something obvious?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭Homelander

The GTX1660 Super is much faster than the GTX1650.

This is about as good value as you get for a pre-built at this point.

i5-10400, 16GB Ram, GTX1660 Super, 1TB Nvme M2 hard drive. Decent case and power supply. €1162

I would act fast, it's really hard to get pre-builts these days for half decent prices due to the shortages.

A 1660 super is about 60% faster than a 1650,so it's a significant difference, but that doesn't come close to justifying the price difference.

Both machines have less than 16GB RAM, which should be a target to reach.

How do you feel about religion? Do you think one of the many gods may give you one if you pray/sacrifice something?

Horizons was brilliant but unfortunately I played it pre patches/3080

There is a general okish plot but hidden in the "findables" is a really really good back story reasons/eventualities etc

Excellent game but I really liked the story and I rarely get arsed about it.

From steam and places like GOG etc you won't need virus suites. And this may be my unpopular opinion that others may challenge here but it's my advice that you never need anti-virus solutions that run 24/7 on a home desktop computer if you practice basic Internet hygiene like not opening strange email attachments/links, using and ad blocker etc.

24/7 commercial anti-virus suites are for business environments.

Windows and steam have full support for all the major console controllers. Steam big picture will allow you to customise for things like turbo too but the menus for that can be a bit iffy.

Any HDTV will work with a any modern GPU. Unless you're wanting to reach high Hz or 4K you probably don't need to think about the HDMI cable version either.

Fair enough, Starting to make sense now as this is all new to me.

This seems to meet all the criteria?

    16GB Ram
    GTX 1660 Super Graphics
    1TB SSD

What are Medion like as a brand?

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

I would personally go here and get the one for 1162eu.

    3600
    16gb ram
    1tb ssd
    1660 super

It's prebuilt, but it's prebuilt out of normal pc parts, so you will be able to upgrade stuff down the line and you will at least know what parts inside. Again, it's not ideal, but in my opinion, it's the lesser evil at this day and age.

Edit: sorry, like and idiot, I forgot to put link in.

The quest to use an xbox controller on pc continues. Tried it with a cable but apparently what I need is actually a wireless receiver because the cable is just for charging? This is great.
