Used car budget 8k

Am looking to buy a car that’s nit going to keep breaking down and costing me money every year in repairs annual mileage is about 5k looking for something with the cheaper car tax have been driving an a4 for the last ten years. Would an a3 be a good buy? Or can anyone reccomend anything that would be a good car for that budget please? Thanks

Almost everything is in newer tax regime now, it's in place 13 years. A3 reasonably reliable but if your priority is not breaking down and costing you money you'll get plenty of cars younger with lower mileage for your budget than an a3.
I'd suggest you might even get one of the Korean brands under manufacturers warranty for another year or so for that budget if you looked hard enough.
I'd prefer a3 myself as it's a nicer car but depends where your priorities lie

Your going to pay a premium for a hybrid so your 9-10k budget is going to get you either an older one or one with high enough mileage. So you might get better value in a conventional petrol car over a hybrid.

Thanks for this. Yeah I wouldn’t like the look of any of them. I’m prob going to just get an a3 petrol budget 10k or maybe an auris if they’re any good in that price range?

How do you know for sure it's a DL reg? It probably is but you cannot tell from the photos for sure. We also don't know where the OP lives.

Also the car is 7 years old so it's not excessively high for the year and this is the sort of mileage that is in the OP's price range for what they say they want.

A3 & Auris are good choices others include...Bmw 1 series (coupe is nice), quahqai +2, Prius, Yeti, VW Tiguan, golf, Sportage, ix35, volvo s60(r design), civic - all have reasonable reliability.

Renault Clio, captur, megane, honda jazz, civic, Toyota Yaris, auris or if size doesn't matter an Aygo, Audi A1, A3, Hyundai i20, i30, ford fiesta, focus

Any thoughts on Peugeot 308 2014 model. A dealer telling me they are great car for my budget and higher spec than a golf?

Peugeot always my favorite brand from outside the expensive Germans. I've had 3 of them.

I've never driven a 308 but I owned a 307 back in the 00s and liked it. It was more spacious than a golf back then anyway I'd say the 308 is a bit more too, although golf has grown too of course. I got a top spec new 307 for the price of more standard golf so I'd say that's what the salesman is getting at with you too.
You can get a golf with same spec as 308 but is going to be dearer new and a hell of a lot dearer used. I'd imagine you will get a 2014 308 for same price as you'll pay for a 2011/12 golf, would that seem right?

Lol. They are bound to say something like that if they happen to be stuck with one for sale.

Golfs command big money even the poorly specced ones but they are very popular and always sell on easily enough for top money again. The 308 probably is better equipped and cheaper to buy but they are a bit like the Opel Astra, they don't stand out as doing anything well and are not desirable by many as people have moved to buying crossovers instead now. Funny thing is that the Golf continues to sell well despite this trend too.

It really boils down to what you want, you will probably get more bang for your buck with the 308 but it would be alot harder to shift than a Golf when you are done with it. If your budget is 8k then obviously it will get you a newer 308 than a Golf. I'd look at the Renault Megane too.

Anything with a Toyota badge on it will be reliable.

Yea that’s what he was saying he said the golfs are a rip off. I’ve only ever driven Volkswagen or Audi. So I’ve no experience of these other cars. My head is fried now lol

Plenty of boy racers driving around in Golfs and A3s too. They don't bother too much with that model Civic. If you want something reliable with low running costs then it's going to be hard to better a Civic.

Careful listening to salesmen. In the last year I've had a bmw salesman telling me the new model A6 are causing lots of problems and I had an audi salesman tell me the bmw 5 is unreliable. I just nod and agree but don't take any of it in. It's lazy selling if all you can do is slate cars you don't have to sell. Golf are possibly one of the cheapest car to own because of the residual values being so good. But if 8k doesn't get you into one you like then it's off the table.

But they are not a rip off. Some people can't afford the one they want, but that's not what a rip off is.

Prices of golfs is crazy, they hold their value but to put that sort of money in is crazy to be honest, you then are down a few years compared to other models and you would get more toys usually too.

I'm not a fan of golf's but my fiance has one. I drove it once ever. I just don't like it. But I'd never advise anyone not to get one if they can afford it to be honest.
