That's been the plan for decades... Nothing new about that.

Good to see it being repaired. Hopefully they widen the footpath and incorporate a dedicated cycle path. I mean it would be shocking if they're not doing that but it also wouldn't shock me if they don't.

I'll believe it when I see it. It's only taken 3 years and €800,000. They've missed various dates. Yes Covid has delayed things but remember it took them over a year after they removed the gates just to start the tender process!

That's not a part of the proposals unfortunately. This is the scope as described:

The project involves the removal and disposal of existing road surface and relaying of new road surface, taking up, cleaning and relaying of existing granite kerbs and the removal and disposal of existing footpath and relaying of new footpath surface.

Other ancillary works will include installation of traffic calming ramps along the 2.5 kilometre stretch of road.

These works are entirely unrelated to any proposals included In the recently published Phoenix Park Transport and Mobility Options Report.

It really is strange how long it has taken. How could the refurbishment of gates take 3 years?!

Maybe they got Cecilia Giménez in to do the refurbishment.

Why was this not done as essential work while the park had reduced capacity, now when things are opening up you have a major section of road closed both to traffic and pedestrians, what a joke, can no one plan anything in this country.

Contractors can't work. Emergency works only.

While you're right that these most severe restrictions will begin to ease in a few weeks, theres no question of things even approaching normal for many months yet, so its as good a time as any to do this work.

What concerns me is any attempt by the OPW just to chuck in a cul-de-sac at the end of the job as one of these "trials". They had better not try to subvert their own consultation process.

Be surprised if they didn't. Leopard...spots...

Main car park at the Papal Cross apparently now closing at 6pm each day. What about the people stopping off after work in the evenings for a walk or run after work. Makes no sense to me!

There must be some reason for that, makes no sense that they would start doing that as the evenings are getting longer, it's been open late all winter.

The side gates are closed, no parking on chesterfield avenue, papal car park closing early now apparently and in general attempts at removing cars.

I personally think people will just start going elsewhere and a few years from now we’ll be wondering why the park is so empty.

They won't because they see it as nature reserve first and an amenity a far distant second.

It was busy in there today but everyone managed to park. I use any of the three carparks on the southern side of the 15 acres and always get a space handy enough. Nice to see it so busy today.

Everywhere park, beach etc is busy today I reckon.

Open the pubs and shops and the park will be back to being pre-covid popular.

I was parked in it on Friday from about 7pm to 7.50 and no sign of it closing when I was leaving. There *is* a sign on the barrier at the entrance saying car park closes at 6pm but that is the second time in recent weeks I have been there at that time without any issues.

In the last few weeks small signs with bikes/people/arrows have been installed on wooden sticks at each junction on the new paths on Chesterfield Avenue. If I'm interpreting them correctly the intent is that to keep bikes off the old cycle paths (and walkers off the hard shoulder cycle paths). Confusingly they also seem to want to enforce one way walking on the new footpaths.

If you've seen the signs, you'll know what I'm talking about. I might take a picture next time. Doesn't make any sense to me, even if segregating people walking in the opposite direction might have been the intent at the "max fear" stage of the pandemic.

Does anyone know what this is about?

No signs at the old paths, so I suppose they're still OK for two way walking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,052 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

I'd say they left any attempt to do something like that 12 months too late. People are just gonna do whatever they like, short of walking on the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 21,282 ✭✭✭✭Stark

The one way walker signs have been there a while (totally ignored of course). They tried those in my local park but gave up on them. Saw one old fella give out to someone walking the other way one day and she just looked at him confused and said "yeah, thanks".

    Wasn't she right too?

I'm all for legitimate public health measures but thats a load of nonsense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,652 ✭✭✭IngazZagni

Yeah those arrows on the footpaths have been up for months. I get the point of it but it's totally ignored so really just a waste of paint.

Separately I have noticed the need for Zebra crossings on Chesterfield Avenue. There's effectively no official crossing point on this entire stretch. There's a line near Castleknock which is not in line with standard zebra crossing road markings so basically they are expecting people to J walk and dodge traffic in a public park..

Trying a way one system but no pedestrian crossings.....

On Chesterfield Avenue, runners on the outer paths and walkers on the inner paths. Would it work?

I'm taking it that you mean inner as the one closer to the road? Vice versa would be better. Nobody likes walking beside the car traffic unless they have to, much nicer to walk further away from the fumes and noise and under the leafy trees.

Inner path is smoother as it doesn't have as many tree roots, so would be better for runners.
