Advice on recent Octavia 172 purchase

    Hi all, long winded post!

Got herself a 172 reg split headlight octavia 1.6 tdi. 115bhp? I think.

Anyways it wasn't a main dealer purchase but an indy garage. Its not due an Nct until july I believe. Traded in her basket case 2010 passat and gave €10000 plus €200 for additional warranty including dpf filter plus he said he would pay for the upcoming nct. Most of its service history is from a carlow dealer but some of it is missing but he said he would furnish her with it on Monday including timing belt mileage that it was changed and due.

First off car dealer said it would be serviced before purchasing so I asked dealer to replace two tyres, rear pads as they are fairly low. He agreed.

He rang about 5 days later said car ready for collection serviced etc, he said couldn't book an nct for another month. I had about 4 hours sleep in two days so was in no form to go through the car and took him at his word that everything was replaced. Paid the balance owed (secured it with €500 deposit).

So after a decent nights sleep she went off and washed the car, when she got back i had a look over the car both rear tyres were the same low thread ones from before and the rear pads were also not done.

Checked the car for oil it was full but manky and i know diesel engines will have the oil kinda dirty even after a service but it dont have that thinned out dirtyish look if ye get me.so it looks like the interval was reset on the dash but nothing actually done. Also one of the dipped beam headlight bulbs was completely missing!!

Now the last thing is there is a noise from the front left when turning left more notably at low speed and if the surface isn't perfectly even. Almost sounds like a top mount to me but im not sure. The car has only covered 200km since friday.

Apart from that the car drives well no warning lights on dash decent performance ect. Engine is louder than expected but most reviews i have read state that as normal around town but its very quite while cruising along at main road speed. Its averaged 49mpg since putting diesel in which is very good in my eyes.

Is there something common I should look for on the suspension on these that causes this noise? Havent worked on many octavia's ive owned a mk1 for a while im guessing it has similar under pinnings like a golf/passat which im fairly familiar with.

I think its on a longlife service interval it says 30000km until next service. He said the timing belt isnt due until 180km theres 140km on it now.

Any common issues i should look for?
What oil/filter would be recommended or should i just get them at the dealers? i was thinking of shorten the interval to 15000km and do one myself and when the 30000km one comes up get skoda to do a service for the service book to help keep the cars history upto date help hold some future value too.

Also it looks like it was leased to a farmer or vet the add said 1 previous owner, from cleaning the manky engine bay today finding straw and that under there lol is why i make this assumption also the exterior has a nick/scratch/chip on nearly every panel! Not too bothered about those once the car remains reliable for the next 2/3 years.

She hasn't noticed the suspension noise but i have sadly so i might have a word with the dealer tomorrow about it.

    Thanks

The long life interval of 30k is the leasing company figures. If you buy the same privately it will be normal 15k. Change to 15k interval.

My leased superb is 30k interval (different engine to yours) and I had to top up the oil at 25k as oil warning light came on (orange not red). Also, as it was leased it will have been serviced in Skoda for mileage up to 100k and then it goes out of warranty and they switch to independent guys. Nothing wrong with that but you will have history up to 100k only.

I would assume nothing has been done and get it serviced for your own piece of mind. Somewhere you trust.

Standard interval is 15k, but extended interval is 30k. There’s no difference in the servicing for either interval.

They are particular about oil. Most 5w30 oils out there don’t meet the spec.

If the dealer did indeed only reset the clock, that’s potentially a very long time without an oil change unless you act on it.

I’d be curious as to whether the fuel filter has been done too. For peace of mind I’d book it into a Skoda dealer for a €250 major service which will cover service plus fuel and pollen filter, I think air filter is in that too.

More Importantly they will do a health check on the car, suspension, brakes etc. They also do a video showing what they’re checking.

It doesn’t sound like you bought a particularly good example (reflected in the price though) so it’s important to try and get it back on track.

It presents well but a bit on the average side but it was reflected in the price as you said. sticker was €13,450.

Nice jump for her from a 2010 passat both cars have 1.6tdi but the octavia's performance is miles ahead of the former it was showing everone of its 200,000 miles!

Im not exactly impressed with the dealer considering he agreed to do service and some work and didnt bother! Although looking at the google reviews 60 odd of them 50 are 5 star and 11 are 1 star borderline horror story. His average looks good at 4 star but the devil is in the poor ones. Warranty work might be like pulling teeth.

I will look at changing the interval to 15,000 on the dash id prefer them at that anyway. Reliability is the most important thing here anyway.

The history in the car at the minute only goes to 60,000km I asked herself and she said some of it is missing there was more there when she viewed it, the dealer says he has the rest of it but left it at the workshop.

The €250 service sounds very reasonable will probably get her to do that after i do a service on it myself to keep her going for the next 10k, the oil has to be vw 505 or vw 507 rated i think the latter is long life?

I would suggest getting it into the dealer ASAP, as you can then go back to the seller with the issues they find.

Even get the €150 basic service and you’ll get the health check with that.

You can check when the next service is due through the touchscreen. I think the only way to set it for 30k interval is by connecting it to the computer, I think the push-button method sets it to 15k.

The next service according to the car is in 363 days 29,700 odd km but i am of the belief it was reset and the car untouched!

I will probably have to talk her into that as such were both fairly strapped at the minute had to pool resources to pay for it as the passat had about 2k spent on it in the last 12 months ontop of the 3k purchase price really got sold a shed there privately on donedeal.

Was hoping for a better experience through a dealer even if not a main dealer. But i see your point about going back to seller with the skoda health check outlining any issues.

Ill look on YouTube there and see if theres a video to shorten the interval but not a big deal if she goes to skoda can request them to change it if it needs the vag com as my vag com is useless lol.

Also I forgot I noticed today one of the front tyres with good thread has a bulge in the sidewall :(

That will tell you all you need to know about how well the car was prepped.

Let them know straight away about the tyres, lest it be argued that you damaged the front tyre after it went out.

While it’s in getting the service, ask them if the air filter was done, or if the oil filter looks to have been touched recently.
If/when they tell you it wasn’t, suggest the seller pays for the main dealer service. I would be skeptical as to what aftercare the dealer will give though, based on what you’ve said so far.

You also get a years AA cover when you do a Skoda service.

Just a quick update, managed to talk her into the skoda dealer service now rather than me! Handy. I gave her a few questions for them following colms advice about if they think it was serviced recently as there has only been a few hundred kms since collecting the car. Also too find out what exactly they will be replacing and the costs plus not to stray from whats agreed upon without asking if its wanted first!

I haven't had a great experience at this particular main dealer's my mother bough a new car there and got fairly done over for the services and a warranty job was almost pushed off to outside the warranty period too but its the nearest one and with covid and only one car between us at present it's probably the only feasible option.

Skoda dealer nearby wants €180 to do oil and filter, no price yet for the major service for some reason. He also said the last time it was at skoda for a service was 2018 which isn't great considering its 172 bit strange unless mileage was put up at a staggering rate.

Also forgot an extra €25 for courtesy car.

Go on to Skoda website, it’s €151 for minor, €199 for major, and €252 for major with diesel filter

Now obviously the garage can ask what they want, but I know I got the online price.

    Will do that shortly.

thanks for the input, might look to the next nearest skoda altogether as im a bit biased against the local one anyway

Would you be able to do the air, fuel and pollen filters yourself and just get Skoda to do the oil and filter? Skodaparts.ie do great deals on genuine parts, the fuel air and pollen filters are straightforward to do yourself. If there's a VW Audi or Seat dealer nearby you could get them to do the oil change either.

I did that last time. Only saved about €60 doing it using Bosch air filter, Mann pollen filter, and a genuine VW fuel filter from motor factors with discount which was a lot cheaper than from Skoda. I’m sure if you went for cheapest option there’d be more saving but I wanted to do it right.

They’re all quite easy to do, especially fuel filter compared to other cars.

I had an awful hangup about using Al Hayes, my local dealer, but their service dept was actually excellent.

Did you check skodapartsireland.ie? They regularly do service pack deals which are very good value.

Id agree, its easy maintenance and very similar to the previous passat 1.6 tdi which ive been keeping going until it was traded in only thing wasn't done by myself was the Ecu had to go to a specialist to be refurbished.

Checked online there put reg in and the prices are as you said good to know.

Yeah had bad experience with my local dealer mother and aunt both did actually, aunts car's sump nut came off I believe shortly after a service!

Flatbedded away they filled it with oil and called her to collect it no damage done, she told them keep it and she wanted a different one wouldn't blame her if my new car dumped all its oil out.

Regular party trick of the old 1.9...
    Did you look up skodapartsireland.ie?
Here's a link to a service kit, an absolute bargain for €110 https://www.skodapartsireland.ie/product/kodiaq-service-kit

The car was 2015 as far i i can remember so 6 years ago she got a replacement octavia in the end.

My uncle is getting a kamiq in july again shying away from local dealer for the next nearest one!

Just had a look there reasonable on skoda parts prices all told ill pass on the site to the mrs she wants a boot liner and a few other bits too so she can see whats on offer.

I usually got mann or bosch stuff off mister auto and if I was stuck id got to motor factors i still get a trade discount in there but cant beat online prices on most stuff really.

Can't blame anyone for using another dealer I bought mine in Waterford as the local dealer gave me a dreadful price on my 172 trade in. With covid I haven't been back to them for servicing but if I change next year I'll go back to them.

Skoda might do a service pack even in a used car, pricing is very attractive

They do, and it works out quite well too.

Can I ask how you did fuel filter? I used to do mine on old golf 1.9tdi (great car but tax a killer) - I currently have 1.6tdi seat leon and would like to do it myself but a bit wary as I've read that you need to have the vcds thingy to prime it

It’s only a case of removing the few bolts on the top, I then drained out the diesel with a makeshift pump I made from a spray bottle. Swap the filters then throw a drop of diesel in, cycle the ignition a few times and off she goes.

I always left the diesel in the body and gently lowered the new filter into it, it always looked perfectly clean (the diesel that is).

Maybe I’m just over-cautious, I gave the inside of the canister a wipe too, just in case.

Thanks for the info - thats the same process I used in my old golf
Will give that a go at my next home service

I was just terrified of getting an airlock and end up spinning the battery flat, me being over cautious:pac:

Completely forgot to update this, car got full skoda service including fuel filter for €240 was good value saves me doing it.

They put a 15,000km sticker on windscreen but reset the computer to 30,000km. They said the car was definitely not serviced / touched in the last month like claimed by seller.

That said they said its in fine fettle only requires tyres now, i thought the pads were a bit low but they recon theres near 10k left in them.

So all in all the car was good value that its all checked out and its ok but id fear for a regular punter who probably would have done another 30k on already overdue oil and filters.
