Well at least it looks like we’re all in the same boat so maybe they’re just not sent out yet. I’ll let you all know if I hear back from admissions

Ok so I have some positive news for you. Admissions came back to me to say they haven’t received the HPAT results yet from ACER so shortlisting hasn’t begun and won’t until they get the results later in the month.

At least we all aren’t out in the cold yet anyway. I hope that helps you all with the nerves for another while :-))

Out of curiosity, are people here applying for graduate medicine also and awaiting GAMSAT results?

  • Registered Users Posts: 43 Duffleboxie

I’m wondering if anyone could advise.

Is it possible to apply to mature entry medicine in the same year that you repeat your full leaving cert?

In other words, will the CAO allow you to be considered for both the mature entry route and ALSO allow you to compete with school leavers if you are sitting your full LC in the one year?

    Many thanks

While this is something which you'll have to figure out on your own independently because I'm not an expert in the intricacies of the CAO system, my advice is: probably not.

RCSI has the same CAO code for undergraduate and mature entry medicine (RC001), so that appears to me to be a fork in the road where you have to specifically choose how you wish to be considered.

I hope this helps in some way.

HPAT results available on your CAO portal. Best of luck to everyone

I did well enough on the HPAT but I suppose it doesn't really count for much since RCSI only use it as a cut-off and TCD only use it to decide between two equal candidates, or so I've read. (As I'm a graduate I am ineligible for UCC and NUIG mature entry). I assume most here are in the same boat and were aiming for the RCSI cut-off - I hope you all got good news.

How did everyone do? We’re a shockin’ year with the auld groupchat updates! Is there another forum somewhere?!

Ps. *Secretly hoping this means there’s less of us and not that everyone’s at home scheming about how they’ll dominate at the interview!!

Hi sorry, I was pleasantly surprised with HPAT result. Thought I did better than expected. Preparing to submit to RCSI , haven’t heard anything from anywhere else.

Hey, I was quite unhappy with my HPAT results -148. I still got called to submit documents by RCSI. Does this mean I'm still in contention or does everyone get asked to submit documents? I would have thought their cut off was a lot higher than 148!

I am also awaiting GAMSAT results. They're due out last weekend in May as far as I know!

RCSI look for an average or competent HPAT score so at that you were probably in around 50 percentile so you meet that criteria. Their cutoff changes depending on how strong applicants HPAT are each year. They say they look for 150-155 upwards but some years it seems it can be a good bit lower. So you are certainly still in contention. Meeting HPAT cutoff simply allows you move to next stage as far as I can see

As a matter of interest what was gamsat like ?

    In a word: lethal.

Section 1 is somewhat similar to Section 2 of the HPAT. Section 3 of the GAMSAT is worth double relative to the first two sections and there's about 70 questions in that section alone (which are, I suppose similar, to Section 1 of the HPAT in terms of problem-solving skills needed, but they're all based on actual subjects: biology, chemistry, maths, and physics).

Part of the difficulty of the GAMSAT was the fact that it ran for about 5 hours, however due to COVID, we had to do an online sitting which meant splitting the test up into two days - Section 1 and 2 on a Tuesday and Section 3 on a Wednesday (I found that very advantageous).

I studied chemistry as an undergraduate and have been working in a lab the past few years. How about you? Did you also apply to TCD? Haven't heard anything from them yet.

Did you do that in UCD? What kind of lab is it?! I’m actually in my final year of my undergrad. It’s awkwardly specialised and I fear I won’t be anonymous if I say it but it’s definitely not science related! No I didn’t apply to trinity as a mature because I was late with their application but with chem you’ll be right up their street! Do you hope to get GEM? I’m actually retaking my whole leaving cert again to compete with the school leavers as well. The whole thing is a long shot for me but i always wanted to have a do-over on my LC!! Love torturing myself!

No I went to UL and I'm working in a lab in Cork :) Honestly fair play to you doing the leaving cert again, that's the one thing I have been avoiding. I did the GAMSAT for the GEM route yes, but I studied for the HPAT so much I didn't put much effort into studying for the GAMSAT due to burnout so I'm not getting my hopes up. I might consider taking a year off work and study for the LC if I'm not successful this year.

Does anyone know any current or past students in RCSI that went through the Mature Entry route? I received the email from RCSI and I'm curious about the difference between the current/past students' backgrounds and careers etc. were. I'm a 2.2 BSc holder and I've taken the GAMSAT 3 times to try gain entry in the UK. This is the closest I have ever been

I know of two students who are currently studying IN RCSI having gone through the Mature Entry route. Both studied and worked in nursing. Deadline for document submission is quite tight - getting the references is quite tough!!
