Changing my car 1.6 diesel for an automatic

Hi looking for some advice,basically changing my car 1.6 diesel for an automatic,best deal I have got so far is for a 211 Ioniq,drove one today for a short time and liked the car nice spec on it,I know there is a newer model coming out but I won't be able to afford it,basically wondering about charging,I live in a terraced house so presume I can't get charger installed on my front wall,I can get one installed in my partner's house no problem but deal hyundai are offering for free charger you have to move to energia and she is just into a new contract with her supplier,how much to install one yourself and how much will full charge cost and how much to fully charge from public network and any other things I should know please feel free to inform me thanks in advance

The new ioniq isn't as well respected as it's 2016-2019 model here. The summary being, why would you pay ~34k for an ioniq which can't properly fast charge (typically see rates below 50kW, thus taking over an hour to charge from low battery to near full on a fast charger. For similar money you'll see the new id4 city in a few months, or a second-hand Kia eniro (a well respected car here on boards). Similar money would get you an id3, which is well worth a look.

As for the ioniq...
A charger could be got and installed from 500-1500 depending what you get. IMO, get one yourself and get an electrician to install it. There's €600 grant to install one, but the bill would need to be in the owner of the cars name. You could perhaps get your name on your partner's utility bill to suffice.

The car has a 38kWh battery, so let's use that figure from empty (there will be some heat losses, but let's ignore that for now, these are rough numbers). A good 24hour rate for electricity is about 14c/kWh. So from empty that's €5.30. A night rate meter would be half that or less, so €2.50 or so.

ESB charge 26.8c/kWh on their prepay plan, so that'd cost just over €10 to fully charge.

Home or ESB it will take over 5 hours to charge from empty to full on a 2021 ioniq.

FYI, the "new" version isn't the ioniq car. Hyundai are using the ioniq name as their Ev range. The car coming later this year is the ioniq 5.

Appreciate that thanks looked at an id3 but they want a little more than 4k more than what I can get the ioniq for,and the VW salesman is related to my partner,I was offered the id3 for 20k,ioniq for 15,800k and a 2020 ioniq for 12,900,can also get kona for 20k but 16k is about my maximum

ESB charge 26.8 C/Kwh ? seriously ? that's an enormous jump from what I remember just a short time ago ?

Was that a bare arsed price with paddy spec. Second thing is you should bare in mind that you’ll have no diesel bill when calculating you’re budget IMO .

In terms of home charger do you have a dedicated parking space? Is there a public footpath so would the cable need to cross the footpath?

There is a 600 euro grant for home charger from seai but you need to meet certain requirements., including dedicated parking space.

What is your daily commute (round trip) and what is your typical long distance trip round trip?

Generally it is not recommended to get an electric vehicle if you cannot charge at home.

Its probably better value to buy used, particularly as the prices of EVs may come down with more mideks etc.

You might be best to hang on to diesel until you can home charge. Some people installed overhead metal swing out gantries to avoid trip hazard and fed cable out letter box, up over the footpath and down to car.

Thanks for advice,need to change now as partner is back driving after spinal surgery and consultant recommended an automatic car for driving,she has a driveway and can charge there,have done the deal to get car today,she drove it liked it very smooth to drive,unfortunately hyundai do a tie up with energia for free charger but she has just switched provider so that's out can anyone give me an idea of price for a charger as besides esb nobody putting prices on website thanks for your help been very informative

Find a charger yourself (post about it in the charger thread on this forum) and pay an electrician to install it. Can be done for less than €600 and then there's a €600 grant, so net Zero.

Pay a "specialist" to source and install a unit and you'd likely be paying €1000+ , and then there's the €600 grant.
