This confuses me, I thought it was the rounded times? not the decimals...not that it made a difference to me, but I was rounding to nearest second on each split.:confused:
I was going by the following

... Let's say 6.1 to 5.8 classifies as a 1 sec split drop. Happy for everyone to show avg pace, actual pace, garmin, polar or strava whatever gives you the best score.

so either way works...whichever works best.

That made a big difference to my terrible effort of last week, it went from -5 to 7 points. So if I had actually stopped on 10km, I'd have improved my score by a whole point. hahaha

Had a go at the medium risk version this afternoon.
My splits are a lot better on Garmin but despite hitting the stop button bang on the last mile beep it says I did 10.01 miles so will go with Strava instead.

    Mile 1- 8:46
    Mile 2- 8:44
    Mile 3- 8:11
    Mile 4- 8:11
    Mile 5- 7:37
    Mile 6- 7:37
    Mile 7- 7:04
    Mile 8- 7:02
    Mile 9- 6:28
    Mile 10- 6:25

Think I'm ok for 5+ points with that as part of getting the bonus points for completing the 3 different risk category runs?

I tried this today - it didn't quite go according to plan.

I was planning to start at 6.10, increasing by 10-seconds and finishing at 4:40. The actual times were:-
    6.07
    6.01
    6.00
    5.36
    5.33
    5.19
    5.06
5.00 <== The only km on schedule!
    4.55
    4.52

It was a full progression run according to Strava ... but Strava also has the distance as 9.98 as against 10.02 on Garmin :(

Here's mine from this morning. Any ideas of anything fancy went right out of the window at the start when I noticed that lap pace was still set on miles, even though pace was on km and lap distance was km!

I think i'm missing a midlife risk attempt from earlier but i done it again for the craic

    I think i managed 11 points with 1 1sec (2 *22 is not good enough!)

    Laps Avg Pace
    1 05:31
    2 05:29
    3 05:07
    4 05:07
    5 04:46
    6 04:46
    7 04:24
    8 04:22
    9 04:01
    10 04:00

Should be OK for 10 points this time around. Strava changed it to 9.99km but thankfully Garmin is a good friend!
No bonus points although I'd happily take one for managing to close a clip on my sports bra that opened in km 7 while still running!!!

It was too nice a day. I had to ruin it with another bash at this. I'd no plan but to try and run as narrow increments as possible without going the wrong side of the split. I'll need to speak to the judge on this one.

    https://www.strava.com/activities/5039259470/overview

    1 - 4:53
    2 - 4:51 -2
    3 - 4:50 -1
    4 - 4:46 -4
    5 - 4:46 -0.3 according to Garmin
    6 - 4:45 -1
    7 - 4:39 -6
    8 - 4:33 -3
    9 - 4:29 -4
    10 - 4:21 -8

I kind of lost my bottle after the apparent even split on the 5th km but Garmin gave says it was 0.3 seconds quicker (attached). Is it 0 points or is it 10 plus some bonuses? Or worse a -2 for an even split?

Also, were some folk using manual laps as opposed to autolaps?

    6 - 4:45 -1
    7 - 4:39 -6
    8 - 4:33 -3
    9 - 4:29 -4
    10 - 4:21 -8

    10 points
    -2 for the missed split
    +2 for the 2x 1sec drops
    10 points total

I'll update final table tomorrow. Been swamped the last 2 weeks. 1 idea for April and might suit 20k radius and better weather. Open to any ideas people have, thanks.

Or if the series has run its course, so be it.

Fair play for taking it this far. Gave me a bit of a laugh anyway.

Fair play for taking this on, and all your efforts over the last 3 months.

Could I suggest a simple 5k TT on the last weekend in April? It would be the one year anniversary of last year’s virtual event, and seeing as we’re still in lockdown, it might be a nice way to mark it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,208 ✭✭✭shotgunmcos

Ideas to keep it going in April (all from participants)

    1. Strava Art
    2. Take Feb predicted number as Par to sprint a 200m
    3. Anniversary of Boards 5kTT at end of April.

Any others? Will I poll it?

Edit: Just noticed The Strava Boards 5k TT Club is still active so this could be a runner for April? Be interesting to compare to 12 months ago too and see who has been training and who fell off the wagon :)

I'm happy to set it up and manage but might need an assistant or 2

I suppose it would be poor form to suggest something and not to put my hand up when you request volunteers. I’ll give you a hand, shotgun.

So weekend of 24-25 April? Any objections folks? I'll close this challenge and set up Aptil 5k TT by Friday

    3 04:39 1

    Sounds good to me.

My only objection is that I won't do great with the month of running I have planned!

Cool, its a thing so. I'll set it up this week.

I will admit I never warmed to this particular challenge from the get-go, and sure enough this run turned out to be an annoyance, spent looking at the watch and calculating paces rather than enjoying the evening. My job is spent working with numbers and usually the day's run is a respite from that... Adding insult to injury, tree cover messed up the signal and so pace was hard to gauge correctly. My aim was for steady 1s decreases, however I was all over the place and ended up with a mess. If there are points for attempt I might grab a few, but doubt any permutation has me scoring for this month.

Still- its good to try something different, thanks to MCOS for generating some interest, and roll on next month.

10 points for the attempt minus (4x -2) for missing 2 splits = 2 points total :) Enough to move you 3 positions up the table :D

I enjoyed that a lot doing the simple progression. I don't know how some of you went for the hard options. I was getting stressed just trying to 5ish seconds faster and not lose points.

    March Table Final Update :)

A few late moves. Hopefully I haven't missed any updates.

Kander and ReeReeG made the biggest jumps.
axe2grind was the only person to hit a perfect challenge, well done!
I think jamule had probably the most attempts :D
My personal and most other favourite update was dubh geannain :D
    1. 5:43 - missed my 5:40 planned start
    2. 5:30 (-13) - okay I'll get into the swing of this. Steady now.
    3. 5:13 (-17) - NOOOOO! Need to reign in or I'll be into 10 k pace by the end.
    4. 5:02 (-11) - So close
    5. 4:53 (-9) - So close again
    6. 4:43 (-10) - Finally
    7. 4:29 (-14) - Useless. you got cocky kid.
    8. 4:23 (-6) - YES 10 seconds I thought. NO when I realised I was working off the wrong number when I got home.
9: 4:09 (-14) - It really is a nice day to be out
    10. 4:00 (-9) - Just make sure it's a progression at least.

PS - I now hate my watch. The lying b*****d.

Not as popular as the previous challenges but thank you to all who participated again, particularly those giving each challenge a go. Its just a bit of craic to add spice to training with no events on the horizon. Next month will be something a bit more familiar ;):D

Great thread! I was so tempted to give it a go a couple of weeks ago, but no where near ready yet. I've learned heaps from following this mind you and will try it further down the line.

Fair play everyone who did it. Its great to see how you can toy around with things when you have the skills!

Can I suggest age grading the 5k to make it competitive? Happy to help with that process.

Yeah, I kept it simple again but we can add it to the series. Used your final table to facilitate just that ;) ReeReeG is helping with this years spreadsheet so maybe she can leverage yours?

Leverage away! It can be adjusted to actual age (rather than category) if preferable.

Can a man run his 5k TT the day before the actual event, asking for a friend........
