My question was whether the RT test was the same as the NAAT (both are PCR, but the website specified NAAT and I don't want to be turned away when I land in AMS); they don't do the antigen here, and I don't know if I'll have the time to do it at the airport (I'm nearly 4 hrs away).

Someone else has since explained that NAAT is a type of RT.

The mob who vilified International travel will be the first lot whinging when we are cutting public sector salaries and reducing investment in public services as a result of reduced government income.

Have we ever even had a direct flight to Barbados?

Likely you due to demand after vaccination and holiday destinations only allowing in those vaccinated. UK will probably be a far larger market for this travel this summer unfortunately.

Good book when there was a direct route. :(

Blame the zero Covid people and RTÉ. Economic treason.

I would also blame the government for pandering so easily to these people, but I guess that it's just much easier to blame something that they know is not really the problem than tackle or admit to the real issues

Moved my June flights to October. Hopefully, the mob will have run out of steam by then and hotel prisons will be a memory!

You'll miss the start of outdoor dining and 10km limits if you go in October :pac:

    Same same

NAAT is Nucleic Acid Test, PCR is type of NAT but there are other process like SDA that are also NATs but are different from PCR

RT-PCR specifically is Reverse Transcription specifically its a type of PCR process that produces cDNA from an RNA template. The complementary DNA can be amplified.

Aer Lingus is a British airline.

    But our national airline

/edit/ actually Ryanair probably is now.

The destination is irrelevant. The point is that Aer Lingus are moving 4 aircraft to Manchester from Dublin. This will equate to hundreds of lost jobs from the Irish economy in terms of crew, engineers and support services. And it’s only the start. Of course they are responding to a foreseen demand from the UK and Manchester in particular after the collapse of Thomas Cook but the fact they chose to move aircraft previously based in Ireland is a good indication of the negative affect the governments decisions are having on the economy and livelihoods.

But sure all you are doing is finally coming to your senses. People were advising months ago on here not to be booking flights for June. They were apparently a "mob".

Whereas in your own case, you are apparently reasonable in now deciding not to continue with plans to go in June....because it took you a few months extra to realise the bleedin' obvious!

Newstalk: Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary says he believes people from the Republic of Ireland will use Belfast 'as a means of escaping' this June

Michael O'Leary has said he expects countries across Europe to stop 'locking people down' from June.

"There's a 24-hour news cycle at the moment feeding all this hysteria - we're still only in the middle of March, and I think the situation will have changed markedly by the time we get to June/July/August".

On the new routes from Belfast, he said: "We think a lot of people from the Republic of Ireland are going to use these flights as a means of escaping to Portugal, Greece and Italy in the earlier part of the summer - even while Ireland's vaccine programme lags considerably behind the success of the UK programme".

He might be right but last I checked Michael O Leary is neither a doctor or a scientist so I wouldn't take his word as gospel

Well a GP is an epidemiologist, virologist, general deity and the head of NPHET so O'Leary probably might aswell probably give it the medical profession a shot considering how blurred the lines have become over the last 12 months.

I dont know in scientific terms whether an RT and NAAT PCR are the same but for the purpose of what you need them for, i.e. entering the Netherlands, I can tell you that the PCR and the rapid antigen tests done at Dublin airport by Randox are the ones you need. They are accepted by KLM to board the plane here and will be accepted at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam

Neither is Michael Martin or Eamon Ryan and they form 2/3 of the sub committee that make the decisions on restrictions.

While Varadkar is a GP, Martin is former teacher and Ryan used to sell cycling holidays.

A safe pair of hands between the 3 of them :pac:

Yea it doesn't look great but Varadkar is just playing to the crowd I think here on this one.

Next week he will be supporting the EU travel pass thing which enables unrestricted travel if Vaxxed or negative tested ...that should be in place from June once this wave on the continent gets suppressed which is likely to happen sometime late April.....once this wave is getting suppressed thoughts will turn to reopening for the summer season.

I normally think O'Leary is a clown but this time he is spot on, people are going to be "escaping" Ireland via the North, if I have I will do exactly this.

How can anyone say travel is over for our lifetime. Ridiculous hyperbole and not worthy of this forum.

EU will give him a swift telling off if he starts adding more EU countries to that quarantine list. They probably put Austria on there just to see if they could get away with it. Once the current surge is over, can't see how we'll be allowed to quarantine EU travellers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,262 ✭✭✭Tazz T

The quarantine list will be scrapped the second Micheál or Leo find out that it's no longer popular. So about 5 minutes after we get the majority of the populaton vaccinated.

Or when they realise the hotels only have an occupancy rate of 0.2% because there are no non-essential travellers coming in from quarantinable countries.

My brother lives in New York. He says things are so loose and relaxed there with restrictions. His friend flew over from Ireland last November because she was so fed up (then!!) of restrictions in Ireland. She expected all sorts of Covid checkpoints upon arrival in the US but there wasn't anything at all.

They ran out of Covid passenger tracker forms on the plane and those that managed to get one to fill out ended up throwing them in the bin in JFK airport as there was nobody and no place to drop them off in arrivals!!

    468 to 203, that's a very decisive margin.

Relax, ok lifetime was an over exaggeration. But can you see travelling anytime soon? They are planning to add a “lot” more countries on the quarantine list as it is. Not to mention Varadkar letting us know we may never get below 500 cases a day. It’s hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel.

What do you think will happen?

Ah for god's sake Mickey 32 I normally like your posts and share your views but that particular post was right up there at the top of the hysteria /hyperbole scale.

Times are indeed grim and for those of us for whom travel is a way of life, indeed one of the only reasons we stay on this island, it's very worrying and very frightening. So let's not go frightening ourselves even more!

Firstly Varadkar is a spoofer, we all know that and plays to the crowd, we all know that too. So I wouldn't even listen to him. Secondly, our Govt are useless, no doubt but are they really that insane and really ready to commit such political suicide as to let our travel infrastructure collapse completely and ready to risk the ire of the EU who we'll no doubt need when the economic fall out unfolds? I really don't think they'll let it go so far.

And travel will never be over while there are loads of us still willing to pack the case and yank out the passport :pac:

Europe is going to be in a different place in 2-3 months. This wave is going to come to an end just in time for the summer season.

By early May cases on the continent will be bottoming out
