Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Hi everyone,

    Have a tikka tactical, looking to rebarrel it,

    What gunsmith would ye recommend?

    I had a rebarrel done in Dom's Custom Rifles in Wexford. He did a 6.5 Crerdmoor barrel for my Unique Alpine. Excellent work. He was showing me the Proof Research carbon wrapped barrels last time I was down. Pricy things, but they look amazing.

    Beyond that I don't have any experience with other gunsmiths for rebarrelling.

    Be careful who you go with , Fabian Connolly would be my reccomendation
    Dom seems to have mostly good reviews
    I've had a rifle I bought second hand which was rebarreled by a butcher down southern direction... That I had to then get cut and rechambered because of the absolute horror job that was done on it previously I've seen better threading in a junior cert metalwork class:pac:

    ^ THIS^ above is why the trade of gunsmith should be a regulated apprenticeship guild trade here and separate from being a gun dealer.
    They are as different as being a motor mechanic and a car salesman.

    But I suppose,like most things firearms related,it will take a serious accident or tragedy before heavy-handed and irrevelant Govt regulation is applied to regulate this.:rolleyes:

    I was in awe how someone would let such a shoddy job out , I had 55,000 psi next to my face with a hatchet job :(
    Luckily the issue was rectified before I had a pipe bomb for a rifle

    Not one to be a claim over little things , but if that rifle blew up that man who did the original job wouldn't be left with a red rotten cent in a civil suit , he was fairly popular a few years ago so it makes me wonder how many ticking time bombs are out there :pac:

    There is just not enough trade i would imagine for a gunsmith to go off and train abroad, come back and set up shop. Anyone i know in Ireland who works on guns does it as a sideline to another trade or job.

    Asking the government to regulate the trade of gunsmith is like handing a monkey a machine gun, it doesn't end well for anyone.

    Pity as there were literally dozens of world class gunmakers and smiths across Ireland once upon a time.

    I sent mine over to the UK to be rebarreled
    No more expensive than having it done here and its proofed as well.

    Funny, I rocked up to the guild looking for the start but the shop was shut :pac:

    Same as other similar issues, we haven't got the critical mass for such luxuries.

    Edit - not disagreeing with you, it's not a job for anyone "handy" with a lathe.

    I do believe we have one lad here on boards shooting that is and has almost completed his German apprenticeship in Germany on being a gunmaker from Ireland...In fact, it was so unique the Irl Times did an article on him as well.

    So, yeah would I use someone like that compared to "J Fuksticks& Sons cattle handling equipment engineers and gunsmiths?"
