Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Origins of player nicknames....?

    Not a fan of ‘nick-names’ (Marty loves to mention them during his commentary) but of those that we hear or have heard regularly in the past does anyone know where they came from.....I’ll start off with a couple

    1. Fingers / the lad with the mullet and swagger of a stride that played for Clare in their glory years
    2. Ger ‘sparrow’ o’loughlin - what da eff Is the bird reference about....?
    3. Cake - Shane Curran ex crazy horse Roscommon goalie
    4. Sambo mcnaughton from Antrim. Was he a big sandwich eater or something
    5. The Gooch......?
    6. James ‘cha’ Fitzpatrick.....
    7. Diarmuid ‘rock’ O’ Sullivan.....?
    8. ‘Totts’ or something similar - player for da banner again from 2012 to 2020 era....??

    https://youtu.be/rXxViCtI40k About 12:30 in this video it tells where the Sparrow got his nickname. I would say the Rock got his nickname because of his strength and Tots O’Connell because of him being small, don’t know about the rest.

    The Gooch, an older lad said he looked like an old doll. He would have been a young lad at the time.

    Getting a bit of ‘traction’ at last :)....another couple that came to mind would be two KK ones

    A few of them in here.

    Gorta - Irish translation for famine is gorta- not uncommon for extremely skinny lads in Ireland to be called famine... The Irish twist on this in Kilkenny is unusual but a great nickname for a hardy player.

    Cha is short for Charolais like the cattle. Because he was so blonde as a baby they said he was like a Charolais calf. It stuck and was shortened

    gooch is around my age and gooch was a villain / bully in different strokes sitcom in the 80s?

    hurlers have nicknames due to being inbred thus differentiating themselves from the rest of the panel with the same surname.

    But Gooch apparently looked like an old Goochie doll from the 80s as a kid and was called that by the senior players when he used to act as ball boy at training.

    Heard that was the reason a few years ago, just as well it was put out there. It could have been linked to the urban dictionary description!!!!!
