I know where there is one for sale, if that's any good.

I remember shooting one maybe 15 years ago, it seemed like a bit of a toy at the time, I know the one I fired was not very accurate compared to a ruger at the time.

I handled one in a Naas gun shop about 30 years ago. Liked it and the way it broke down so easily and was going to buy it, but in the end i bought something else. Sorry Grizz, thats the sum total of my experience of them. Never seen one since.

    What do you want know??
Small gun, sloppy chamber, inconsistent barrel mating, handy for short range, cycles subs, doesn't like stingers. Not threaded.

Scope options are best suited to barrel mounted scout scopes, dovetailed directly into barrel.
Comes with 7 and 10 shot mags.

Trigger gaurd made of crap plastic. Rimfire technologies make aluminium replacement gaurd. The sear is non adjustable but you can gunsmith it to get it to fire better..
The trigger group is near identical to model 60 except no lifter..
Best groups 1.5 at 75 yards..
    Again sloppy chamber..

Looks like the sort of a thing, you'd buy for a young lad, for the weekend, if you lived in the states

It's a "survival rifle" but also an every day unit. Hand for packing away. Handy if yer on a bike or live in apt or housing estate and what to keep a low profile..

Handy if ye can walk to your shooting grounds..

Weakness is the barrel receiver insert. This is a push fit into the receiver on one side and threaded on the other for the barrel nut.
& if ye over tighten it you'll loosen the bit that's meant to stay rock solid.. in receiver and then no mater how tight yo make the barrel nut you barrel will still be moving..

Mag holder also forms the lead-ramp to chamber and is made of die-cast metal.. it can be cracked by (I think) hammering the action with stingers. as above.

There is not really much after market stuff out their.. some trigger guards and some cross over items from the model 60s.

The manual claims that it handles 17hm2 but I never seen the barrels offered.. also they could have offered a range of twist and cambers for the barrels but the didn't.
Aguila 60 sss will cycle it but keyhole at a rate of 1:6 as the micro grove 1 in16 twist won't stabilize them..

Feeding from a mag restricts you to long rifle only, you can get shorts in to her but it's a mess if she won't cycle.,
Floberts are a a real PIA to drop into the chamber.

If you want the ability to shoot various sizes of 22 rounds in a take down then you need something else.
The feel of the gun is ok but there's nowhere smooth to hold the forend...stock.

If you change the stock you find that if it's longer than the recover you'll struggle to get the barrel nut tightened.
    A bi-pod is also a challenge..

Ramline Stocks used to offer non-folding tacti-cool stock for the m60 that you could custom fit..
Factory stock is hollow at the rear.
Also you need a c-spanner or a coin to tighten the barrel nut but the factory nuts only have 2holes and if you stock is modified or you use a standard reciever scope that's extends over the barrel nut- you have difficulty tightening it. as you can only engage on the nut at, say 3 oclock and 9 oclock.. Extra holes on the nut would allow you to engage at different positions and effect tightening..
The threads on the nut are not interrupted so it's 6-8 turns to get it snug. They are also coarse which means you need to apply a higher rotational force to the nut to get it snug up.. and this places pressure on the interference fit of the barrel retention insert and its splined cross pin

Have you considered a Henry copy of the AR-7 survival rifle Grizz?

Which is exactly what I want it for,a trainer rifle for my rather petite GF.

Sure have, but in about the same category of availability, and more or less on par with the Marlin for accuracy.Tracked down an original Armalite version here, which is the best of the whole bunch apparently, but the owner would rather sell his kidneys rather than part with this one.:)
Importing from the UK at the moment is just a joke with the costs and paperwork.
The French are overpriced[as usual] .
It's an illegal firearm in Germany on par with owning an SMG.
The Italians want double the selling price in police and customs graft to get it out of Italy,if one is available.
So unless there is someone here that wants to sell theirs in Ireland?

Thanks...Sounds like you had one at one point? That's a good review of what can be wrong with a gun.

OK so don't feed it stingers, or hypervelocity stuff , don't use pipe wrenches to tighten down the barrel nuts, replace the trigger guard with an aftermarket accessory, watch the sear for problems, possibly get the chamber recut. Don't expect sub MOA match- accuracy,or go burning a brick of 500 .22 in it every weekend.:P
    Have I missed anything?

I added a few points to the main post above,, I would have thought that a marlin mod 60 would be better. Neat and less complected as GLs like

You wont be able to simply re cut the chamber. The outside diameter of the barrel is say 20mm but there is a 3mm wide ridge ahead of the chamber which exists for 3mm of the barrel length and it is onto this that the barrel nut places it thrust to sung the barrel into the retaining sleeve thus allowing the barrels face (with extractor cuttings) to terminating flush with the inside face of the receiver body. Head spacing is formed by a rebate within the bolt face..
A new chamber would only be possible with a barrel liner or a new barrel with an outside diameter of 26mm thus allowing you to form this shoulder which is essential for the nuts relationship.. Note that any dims provided are not verified as being real but only provided as a metric by which to explain the barrel profile

Are you looking for light weight, short length of pull, general compactness, or a bit of all them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭tudderone

if you don't want to go the semi-auto route, cz do a lovely little youth model that would fit the bill as regards size and weight.

Might be an idea to contact these folks:
    https://wojski.com.pl/pl/p/Kbks-samopowtarzalny-Henry-AR-7-US-survival-Rifle-22-lr/540
    https://ostoja.stargard.pl/index.php?jezyk=1&menu=5&podmenu=11
    https://sklepsnajper.pl/produkt/henry-us-survival/

The last of those has AR-7s in stock, the former 2 list them on their sites.

Never ordered firearms from Poland before though, so not entirely sure how easy/complex it would be.
Can't imagine it would be massively different from Germany though.

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

E450/480 for the Henry AR7 new here in the IRL/Uk/EU region. Plus various highway robbery shipping and import cost too.:(:(

Think we are gonna run with the Marlin.

Why not the ruger 10/22. Endless combinations of parts and tuning you can do with them, easy to find and not expensive.

Yeah, for what you are getting that is pretty nasty alright.
I wonder what price a 2nd hand buckmark carbine would go for.

Always thought it was a pretty light little plinker.

Or maybe the ERMA M1 22 clone?
    https://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=12884638
€230 and 2.5kg is nothing to sniff at.

    Or as tudderone said, 10/22.
If LOP is a problem with the standard stock then toss it into another with an adjustable butt and move til it feels comfy.

Or go the whole hog and pop it into a 10/22 mg42 stock and get the AA tripod.
No need to hold it up at all then! ;)

Basically its a question of weight and price guys...I would have gone a 10/22, but finding one in my budget price is another story. And as she will be shooting it more than I will be,hopefully...:D
