We all know TV has ruined non firearm owners' perception of guns. That is a given.

What annoys me, and the reason for this thread, is what are some of the silliest things you've seen. Doesn't have to be mind blowing, even subtle things only a gun owner would know.

Watching re-runs of The Wire (season 1 so far) and Omar is pulling a heist. He is carrying a side by side shotgun and just before he enters the drug house, as he is lifting the shotgun, someone decided it would be more theatrical to add a sound effect so stuck in the "Ka-chunk" sound of a pump action being racked.

One of my personal favorites, from a while back, was discovery channels rendering of a bullet going down a barrel.

My favourite are the "silencer" sounds -Phhttt, Phhttt.

But on a side note, when I was applying for my .223 and wanting a moderator I gave a reason that I didn't want to disturb livestock when shooting, my RFD invited the Super ( who lives very close to him) to hear the sound of a "silenced" rifle. Job done.

That is a rarity and something i'd love to have seen.

Magazines in movies/TV hold about 1000 rounds each.
The gun users can track their target through a scope from a standing position without a single shake, they practically have hydraulically damped limbs.
    Scopes have 1000 X magnification.
Bullets don't kill the hero - they merely enter and neatly leave their bodies leaving nothing but a bad cut for an injury, the exit wounds are clean, the bullets never expand nor tumble or smash bone.
If it's a scoped rifle being used - the elevation turret must be incessantly adjusted both up and down.

This is the main one that annoys me.

And the first priority in treating TV GSW's is to get the bullet out as quickly as possible :)

Excuse my French, most TV today is total utter crap, reality this, reality that, people living their lives on a phone, so called reality stars only known because of their stupidity.

    That's my rant for today.

Old TV westerns & modern shows - shooting locks off jail cells and strong boxes, magic, opens every time and no ricochet.

It's perfect aim with a 90 degree pistol hold that gets me.
Along with super soaker levels of recoil :D

In contrast the current re-run of the A-Team on Gold is doing its bit for shooting sports. Plenty of ammo action but little or no related damage apart from jeeps constantly flying threw the air and landing on their roofs, to be followed by all occupants making a dizzy but relatively intact exit:D

That is because on TV guns are being used as weapons not tools.

The Gangsta stance.Hold up and over your target,, hold your crotch with your free hand, and PUSH da "Yeet cannon" at that target while cussin to make the bullets fly out all the quicker.

    Westerns
the 60 round revolver 120 round Winchester. The magic saloon tables that break in two when someone lands on one, but become utter kevlar when the hero is hiding behind them in a gunfight. Not to mind the neatly drilled flesh wound, that hardly stains the good guys white shirt after getting hit by a 45cal lump of unjacketed lead.

    2world war films
Every tool holding their STEN or Schmeisser MP40 by the magazine while firing!! A sure way to jam either gun that would have earned you a bollocking from your Sgt or Unteroffizer depending back then.
Pulling grenade pins with your teeth! Who needs that tooth enamel?

    Modern-day
shooting pistol gripped pump shotguns from the hip. Wholly inaccurate in real life.
Ditto for the hold above the wall, window, etc SMG /assault rifle and just waste ammo randomly spraying bullets at your enemy.

Utterly bizarre and incomprehensible scope reticles.

All good points Grizzly, the scopes i forgot about! Older movies the 'snipers' have a basic duplex crosshair, yet the shooter uses no hold over or under for any shot. Magic reticle is bullseye at every range!

In a World were the intelligence agencies were gleaning thier Intel off the media and then briefing the media based on this Intel, what do we expect.

My favourites are muzzel flashes even pre CGI. Purely for theatrical effect as are most on screen explosions, especially the cars that fall off the cliff and nearly always explodes.
But a common gun one is when the character very purposely racks back the slide on a semi auto pistol and moments later for dramatic effect and usually to drive thier point across thumbs the hammer to the rear. Similar faux pas are made in countless scenes were the character has a bolt/pump/lever action fire arm that they have just chambered a round on screen and then, again for a sense of drama, they recock and chamber a round.

Although who doesn't like the sound of a pump action being 'shucked', unless your on the buisness end of it. Ahhh I miss the old pump action, guaranteed to raise a few eye brows.

The one that annoys me actually has real life consequences.

Most baddies when shot in the movies drop down dead instantly. So Joe Public now thinks that one shot is enough to subdue even the most determined armed attacker and that he/she/they (pick you favourite pronoun :D ) couldn't possibly continue to pose a threat after he has been shot once.

This has given rise to a whole pile of gobsh1tes who think that it's murder when the police force have to shoot someone multiple times to negate a threat.

As an aside, there's a young wan down near me who keeps posting about the George Nkencho shooting calling it a racist murder and has now gone and got an ACAB tattoo. So now she's permanently marked with something that means All Cops Are Ba5tards. Seriously, what the fcuk goes on inside some people's heads.

Although who doesn't like the sound of a pump action being 'shucked'.

Also, when you would pump a pump-action to bring the cartridge up...you'd then place another cartridge in the magazine underneath to ensure it was full and ready for action......never saw that happening!

In most bank robbery or hostage movies : -

Police sharpshooters on rooftops, standing near the roof edge (usually has a little wall that you could pop a bipod on) but shouldering the rifle instead and taking aim at the bad guys about 200yards away. Glad I'm not a hostage.

Still on reflection, could it happen here in real life ? :D

Another thing I hate is the persistent use of the Steyr AUG or the H&K G36 in sci-fi films. Naturally they have bits of plastic attached to them here and there but you can clearly see what the design is around. Great rifles but really is that what Hollywood things we will be still using in the 24th Century in elite military units ?

Not to mind really smart in a covert scene.Let the bad guys know what you have and your general location from racking a round.

Forgot the other one. LAZERS. Has no one ever tried one of these things in bright daylight? The dot is washed out immediately in bright sunlight, but somehow in the movie universe they still show up perfectly on the bad guys chest or forehead.

As well as the SPAS12 shotgun. But it shines in a movie prop gun role because it is absolutely useless and potentially dangerous as a real-life gun.

But using tarted up guns as some sort of futuristic zapper is nothin new. Albeit utterly annoying
The Imperial army in Star Wars were toting MG42s and Sterling SMGs.Han Solo's blaster is a Mauser C96, The Mandalorian is packing a Bergmann.

Aliens Space Marine corps personal weapons were Thompson SMGs in a clamshell housing, along with some modded pump shotguns as grenade launchers. Ditto MG 42s and Cpl Vasquez was using an HK VP0Z as her PDW.

In my Airsoft days I used them cause I thought they were cool and functional. Until I actually turned up at some of the games and realised I couldn't see them at all. If you wanted one that bright for daytime, your into laser etching steel plate strengths!

Admittedly, in some of the forest games and cqb they were mildly functional. But once your out of cover or in sunlight, no chance.

Fire a single shot indoors at a range with no hearing protection and you'll be in pain. If the calibre is big enough, it'll rattle the fillings in your teeth.

The movies make it look like the bang from a bang stick doesn't affect your hearing.

John Wick fires billions of rounds indoors and outdoors with seemingly no effects on his hearing.

And there's Kenau priding himself on being realistic with his gun handling. Only guy, I know who went out and got himself some pro training in gunwork in Hollywood.

Much of the reason why you see the same guns time and again is because they are procured for shoot(filming) from the same specialist prop company time and again. I’ve been on a film set and seen the special firearms prop guy literally walk on set hand the actor the weapon, the shot is filmed and before the actor moves the firearms guy is straight back on set and takes the firearm from the actor.
Useless info, but Bruce Willis pistol in Die Hard was the actual same pistol used by Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon

Depending on what a director is looking for, realistic is not always entertaining.
Michael Mann went all out in Heat and got his actors trained on a range using live rounds, also he used the actual sound of the blanks firing in the getaway shootout sequence.

At least it was a shotgun. I’ve heard the same sound for an unholstered handgun.

12+ shot revolvers were another peeve of mine.
Endless supply of magic self reloading magazines.

A big one that gets me. Is a large caliber firearm, or especially a shotgun. When shot at a target sends then flying off their feet and through the air. With zero reaction force on the shooter.
Somehow manages to get it wrong twice in two directions.

    I've shot a 10 shot revolver. It was only a .22 though.

The scene in Django where Django shoots Leonardo DiCaprio's sister is a ridiculous example of someone going flying after being shot. It is entertaining though, in a funny way.
