It was the matches that made the crucible not the venue.

Maybe it was the venue that made the matches (for the players??)

    We have a winner...

    Delighted. Great comp Omack cheers

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,625 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

    Stunned by that result!
I voted for the Crucible but thought it would be heavily beaten

It is so iconic though, and the players genuinely seem to love it

I think it's one that captures everyone too. My mum's not into sport but loves the snooker. I have fond memories of being allowed to stay up late to watch it. Of watching it with my granda. I'd say a lot of people have similar memories :)

And of course, great tournament Mackers! Thanks for running another great one :)

Yep, voted against my own nom there, memories of watching the classic finals in the Crucible were too strong.

Great contest Omack, thanks for running!

    Whaaaaaat????

I don't believe it! (in my best what'syermansname voice)

I thought Croker would absolutely romp home, nearly didn't bother voting on that basis!

Great game Omackeral, even though i only really got into it in the latter stages. Thanks for running, another goodie!

Here's how the voting went down.

The Crucible raced into a 5-0 lead via cdeb, MicksJaguar, necro, HeidiHeidi, SineadSpears.

Croke Park pulled two back via JP Liz V1, alchemist33.

Electric Nitwit and bubblypop went tit for tat with one each.

2 for the Crucible from Zaph and Kolido put the Sheffield venue out of sight.

Croke Park fans Sawduck, KathleenGrant and BrianBoru00 couldn't do enough to save GAA HQ.

That early start out of the blocks really stunned me and there was no coming back. A wildly unpredictable result I think. I think the venue may only have had one nomination if I recall.

Ah balls really thought Croke Park would win, snooker must be more popular

Another brilliantly organised and run tournament Omack, thanks for all your hard work. Genuinely surprised at the winner and even the fact that it made it so far. Chalk one up for the little guys.

    I'm baffled to be honest...

To mind there could have been serious challenges from [1] The
    MCG
    1280px-2017_AFL_Grand_Final_panorama_during_national_anthem.jpg

    What a stadium
    ...

    [2]
    The Birds Nest stadium
    usain-bolt_ap_m.jpg

Everything going for it except history where 12 years means its only really a toddler...

    [3] Wembley
    wembley-stadium-87434432.jpg

    football2807a10.jpg?width=136
and of course for the olympics

    WireAP_9775f598a88446f6b182904c4a4a998c_16x9_992.jpg
    including some not nominated

[4] The Big House -Michigan Wol erines American Football team

    [5] Notre Dame Stadium
    stadium-article-image-1265x720.jpg

    [6] The Boston Garden
Championships won for both the Boston bruins in Ice Hockey and the most storied franchise of them all - The Boston Celtics.

    5ac1fa38454685faa8c1ee4eb9e1eeba.jpg

    [7] --> Preliminary round.. Club football/soccer round
personally I'd have selected Anfield- the whole YNWA would have trumped everything else -the closest challengers would have been Dortmunds ground and Camp Nou...

    [8] --> Preliminary round .. . . .Quirkly/something different
A - Eden Park (home of the greatest rugby team)
    B-
    B - Rangers

    C-Anfield
    D-Old Trafford

    E-Camp Nou
    F - Westfalenstadian

    G- Maracana
    H- Azteca

    I- La Bombanera

At the end of the day- -
    - American stadiums suffer because of the amount of high quality capactity ones.
    - Soccer similarly but pushing Anfield through cos of so many great European nights.

My QF/top 8 lineup would have been .....

    CP
    Birds Nest
    Wembley
    Michigan
    Boston Garden
    Anfield
    Westaldstadian
    Cheltenham
    .................giving SF of......
CP beating the beautiful Birds Nest primarily due to histroy............
Wembley beating Michigan -ticking boxrs everywhere...
Anfield - one of if not THE GREATEST club location anywhere.....
Westfalstadian beating what was a great but limited option for spors events
    ...........................................
CP because of the meaninfulness of the history......
    Anfield

The meaning to everyone involved means CP is a hands down final winner.

    Please update when comple...

Croke Park - only MCG, Maracana and possibly birds nest would compete

To mind there could have been serious challenges from [3] Wembley
    wembley-stadium-87434432.jpg

Had it been the old Wembley with the twin towers, then I'd say there was a case for the overall winner there, it was the very definition of iconic. The new Wembey, not so much, take away the arch and it's not massively different a lot of other large stadiums built in the last 20 years.
[7] --> Preliminary round.. Club football/soccer round personally I'd have selected Anfield- the whole YNWA would have trumped everything else -the closest challengers would have been Dortmunds ground and Camp Nou...

They sing YNWA at the Westfalenstadion too. :) And the Yellow Wall > The Kop, imo.
At the end of the day- -
    - American stadiums suffer because of the amount of high quality capactity ones.

I think American stadiums fell short in this competition due to lack of familiarity, as much as anything. The same is probably true of some of the other venues for more niche sports, or the likes of La Bombonera, which some non-soccer fans probably wouldn't have come across before.

The mad thing about the Melbourne Cricket Ground making the semi final is that it wasn’t even nominated. I added it in to give Cricket a token representative. I actually had the Crucible on the wild card list too until Electric Nitwit proposed it at the 11th hour

My first reserve for wild card was Stade King Louis II in Monaco

You didn't count tc20's and my pm vote for the final.
    That'd make a draw?
    #JusticeforCroker 😂 :)

    Great tournament though
    Thanks for running it

Delighted with the result. You would have got great odds on that winning from the outset.

Very surprised MSG and Wimbledon were eliminated so early.

    Great tournament as always Mack.

    #JusticeforCroker :)

The offer via pm was only for the semi final I’m afraid. I couldn’t really go beyond that and have votes for draws of matches that haven’t happened yet. When I said give me your list in order of preference, was in case your top two met in semi final action. Either way, I received more reasons for for Crucible Theatre and they were very strong personal ones two eg being allowed to stay up late to watch!

Plus, the underdog winning was a nice change of pace

Croker is up BIG, but the crucible is trying to STEAL the vote, but we won't let that happen!

    Hahaha fair enough.
    Great comp
