Seriously, how hard can it be to livestream lessons?

Me and OH were discussing this, and it does sound like something that should be easily done, but if you think about it there are complications.

For example my kids, like a lot in Donegal, go to a schools where there is more than one class in each room.

Now, for the teacher to teach their room, they could have up to 3 different age groups in it. To do that remotely they are speaking to 3 different groups with 3 different pieces of work. It's easy to do it in person, but remotely it brings issues.

And take my 3 kids. They are in 3 different classes. If they are to be taught remotely, then they need 3 laptops to be schooled at the same time. And if im working from home that's 4 laptops needed.

Not as simple as it sounds.

I suppose in a situation like yours, you could try chromecasts to TVs (no interactivity), or cheap tablets.. though you'd prob need fairly decent broadband to cope with 3 streaming classes and a person working from home

Why would they need to lie to justify lockdowns and other life saving measures? Nobody benefits from the entire country being shut down.
I didnt mention anything about lockdowns so please be a bit more careful with your replies..

And even if you don't want to believe the daily case numbers the hospital admittance and ICU numbers are there to see.
Those numbers come from the same sources.

Ask anyone working in any of the hospitals and they'll tell you exactly how real the numbers are.
Ann this is a big issue. I have talked to nurses, care attendants, catering staff etc working in LUH and they all tell the same story that the official figures dont tally up with what they are seeing in the hospital. Think back to what we would now call normal times and you had the HSE/Dept Health saying there were X number of patients on trolleys awaiting beds while the nurses union were consistently adding 15 - 20% on to that.

In my opinion a strict 4 to 6 week lockdown is needed to try to give some kind of stability after some of the stupid antics before and at Christmas.

I'm heading to work around the county on Monday but can't go more than 5k at the weekend.

So are they telling you there are less people in intensive care than the official figures, or less people in the hospital sick with covid? How big is the discrepancy between the official figures and your figures?

Does anyone else think that the daily figures are being used for political reasons or justification of certain actions? Personally I have a huge doubt on the reliability of so called stats that are being provided by official sources.

Bit of a conspiracy theory is it not to say the government are lying to us about how many cases we have?
What are the reasons or justifications they're aiming for?

There are lies, and there are statistics. I've already given examples of how statistics can be manipulated, without lying, to paint a very different picture.

Here's another little snippet. I posted about the numbers of staff at Letterkenny hospital some time back. Curiously, I haven't heard a word about transmission into the community since then...

My daughter's sister in law works at the hospital. She lives with her parents, and one brother.

He, in turn, works with my son in law. All of them currently infected with covid, including two of my grandchildren.

I don't hear any anecdotes about how that outbreak spread into the community in the daily briefings. Strange, that - or is it?

There are two places your daughters sister in-law could have gotten the virus, in the hospital or in the community, you're convinced she got in the hospital and spread it to her family, perhaps it went the other way?

Remember that everyone that works in the hospital also lives in the community, the hospital is not the source of all the virus in the county.

No, the hospital is not the only source of the virus - however, since my daughter's father in law is in the vulnerable category, they were being as careful as they could be. So, the hospital is certainly the most likely source.

Even if it weren't, the point still stands. Hospital workers who contracted covid-19 ( through no fault of their own, obviously) - are likely to have transmitted it to some of their family and friends. It beggars belief that none of them did - yet we haven't heard a word about it. (Nor can I recall having heard any figures for transmission from Nursing homes, residential facilities, etc. - yet we know there have been outbreaks, therefore there had to have been some transmission into the community.)

So, why not? If it's possible to state with certainty that person x went on to infect x number of people, then why are we not applying the same rule to schools, hospitals, residential homes, nursing homes, etc?

Statistics are interesting - depending what way you choose to interpret/present the facts you can tell a whole range of stories without ever telling a lie...

they were being as careful as they could be.

FTR, I'm UK so am speaking as such.

I run four supported living services. Up until last week, covid free and then a staff member tested positive. She's the most careful person I know, has sacrificed everything family wise to avoid bringing it into the service.

Thankfully, due to PPE at work, she has avoided being a spreader, something she is hugely relieved about.

Simple fact is, lots aren't following guidance and it only takes a momentary lapse.

The UK strain is feckin rampant, sorry about that.

Don't pin all the hopes, keep your distance.

So just home from work. After two weeks of staying in a bubble and restricted movement I was working with other people today. Construction. All the chat today was about another complete lockdown like last spring which I support whole heartedly and will adhere too. But why if this is going to happen did it not happen today before thousands of people left their bubble to go back to work. Seriously think our government is great at bolting the door after the horse has bolted

Have to agree. There was a wonderful opportunity missed but then again what do you expect.

In a similar mode we have this crazy situation where it seems the dogs on the street know that schools wont open next Monday but "officially" there wont be any decision made until Wednesday next. All this despite the fact the Education minister has repeatedly stated that the schools will open.

52 new cases in the county today or at least thats what we've been told. Over the last 3 days we have had figures of 339, 194 and todays figure of 52. At a time where numbers are increasing all over the country our numbers are decreasing. Wouldnt it be great to think that we are all on the up and up but it aint that simple.

I was talking to a mate today on the phone and he came out with a very good take on the current situation. He said up to recent times we were hearing numbers being mentioned daily but these days we are hearing the number of people that we know personally.

Seriously fukced off with the whole thing now. Can see why some people don't give a damn, work tomorrow again hoping and worrying that you didn't stand to close to someone or you didn't touch something and end up taking it home with you. And then you have clowns who can't make a proper decision that everyone knows will have to be done and should of been done before people started to mix again.
Can't stand listening to them crying about numbers now, they new what would happen and we all new that they opened up 2 weeks to early.

So what are the real figures from your sources then? How many more/less than the official ones?

I don't think that's what he meant just that were all hearing of more positive cases among people we know than we ever have

I wouldn't pay any heed in the daily numbers for now due to the backlog - there's around 11,000 swabs across the country that haven't been included in the case reports. The daily numbers will be skewed and potentially vary greatly until that is cleared.

Was more on about his chat about the figures, Muffler seems to know people in LUH that are telling him that the official figures are out of whack with what they experience, just looking for him to share that info, so we're all better informed. Are things worse or better than Nphet are informing us they are and by how much?

Just look on fb at tge schools alert page. Big discrepancies between figures they are getting and what the depts are telling us.

Construction closing apart from social housing and emergency refurbishment.
Why could they not have made this decision before thousands went back.

I don't know what Mufflers sources are telling him. Mine tell me that there are more patients with covid than the official figures suggest.

One example is on a day recently where the official figures stated something like a dozen figures (sorry, can't remember the exact figure), there were also 19 suspected cases. All of the staff knew these patients had covid, but the test results hadn't confirmed it, so, it went down as a dozen. The official figures are always lagging behind the actual figures.

What else is happening, I cannot say - but any mention of the official figures to my sources results in "Aye, right!", - at best...

Suspected is the key word there.

These suspected cases can't be included in the figures until they are confirmed as positive cases and then there may be a delay in a day or two until these are recorded as such.

    Obviously

So your 'sources' don't dispute the numbers of confirmed case that we are being told about?

Don't know why we bother with testing at all, when all we have to do according to you is let some member of staff throw their eye on them to confirm covid or not, would save a pile of money at the same time.

On rte this morning they said there were still around 9000 cases pending to be released into the daily figures.
This came about due to a computer glitch when changing over or something along them lines over Christmas.
So looking to get accurate figures is going to be near impossible until they get all the backlogged cases released.

    Well thanks for the sarcasm.

One reason for the discrepancy in numbers is the delay in test results.

I'm told it's not the only one.

How do you think staff try to control covid spread in new admissions? Yup, by "casting their eye over them", and doing their best to segregate those that are "suspected" cases...

Then again, maybe we should also believe the official line that schools are being closed because of the risk involved in travelling to and from school only, because kids somehow miraculously stop transmitting covid the second they enter the school gates...

Personally, I'll listen to the staff on the ground, because "official sources" in this Country have a less than stellar record where sharing facts is involved.

You, of course, are quite free to accept what you are told, even where the official figures being released don't add up, even with the barest level of scrutiny...

I don't listen to him at all, actually. I'm not a fan in any way, shape, or form.

My opinions are formed by cross referencing official sources, finding the discrepancies, eliminating possible reasons for those discrepancies - such as delays in test results, for example - and then checking with sources that I know, that have no earthly reason to lie...

New year resolution, don’t listen to Claire, Pat or Greg. Avoid papers and news. Heads down for a month and review. No point in people arguing about stuff they can’t control. Listen to music etc. that’s my plan. Say safe.

If pointing out the absurdity in an argument is sarcasm then I'm guilty.

So give figures from your sources, how much are the official figures out by? What is the true rate of infection in the county?

If you're not gonna give hard figures you don't really have any 'sources' you're just repeating gossip.
