Pillar Bedding

I recently purchased a thumbhole stock to be fitted to a Sako Quad rimfire rifle. How do I go about pillar bedding the stock. There is a hole close to one of the action screws in order to facilitate barrel removal. Between the two holes there is about 5 mm. Do I have to glass bed the stock at some stage.

I've pillor bedded about 5 or 6 rifles, have a look here for ideas. It's a Sako .308 but the same will apply to most rifle bedding.

If I pillar bed the action do I need to glass bed the action too?

Excellent idea using the gas fitting as a pillar.

    IMO yes.
Your replicating the exact shape of the action into/onto the stock. Therefore giving the best fit of the action into the stock.
I do the pillars first, then the action.

Would it not be better to just have the pillars bedded and therefore have just two points of contact. Therefore less chance of the action changing it's shape if the stock happens to move somehow. Is it possible to bed the pillars first, paint the stock and see what happens. Then at a later stage if I wanted bed the action.

What is the inside diameter of the brass gas fittings you are using as pillars Clive.

No. The idea, is to make one solid connection between the stock and action. With the pillars as part of the unit as well. Using Devccon 11011steel epoxy as the compound. It will not shrink as it cures and goes as hard as a rock.
You can just put in the pillors but it won't be a 'bedding job'.
With the action bedded in the stock if the stock should swell or strink then it won't effect the POI.

That plumbing fitting is used for bedding a 10/22. The action is flat at that point of contact. Hole size is just under 6mm so it was drilled out.

That epoxy goes off in 5 mins. Is that enough time to have everything ready. A slow setting epoxy would be better.

The bottom of the quad action is flat too. Picture attached. One screw anyhow. Any suggestions for the one near the trigger.

The Devcon is slow setting, and gives you plenty of time to get the parts in place. I used aluminium tube for the pillars on my rifles, B&Q, Woodies, Homebase.
Do a Google search on pillar bedding for more info. I did a CZ 455 thumbhole stock, and put it into an old Bruno stock. Had to nearly cut away all the stock where the action sat.

Here are photos of the bedding job on my CZ 455 into a Brno stock.

What kind of thickness can Devcon be safely used. What kind of torque can be applied on the action screws. I can get a loan of a wrench that gives the applied pressure.

If I can remove the trigger unit and the magazine well what is the procedure for replacing them.

As the devcon is a steel epoxy resin then most any thickness can be used. And let's face it your not going have that much on a bedding job.
If you going to put pillars in as well (as you should), then you can tighten the action screws up until you start to crush the pillars, and I'd say the threads will strip first.
I cut shapes of the trigger unit and mag well out of polystyrene. Your not filling up that part of the stock, only under the action where the it sits on the stock.
Look at the CZ 455 job I did on FB link above.

    Devon 10110 1lb £211.27 on Amazon. Mmm.........

Unavailable at the moment. Any idea where I can get a smaller quantity. How much is needed around the pillars to hold them in place. I would think 2mm should be enough.

I used the Devcon 11012 (the UK PRODUCT NUMBER) about 40 Euro for 500g kit.

If I have to put the Devcon along by the trigger unit and the magazine well what would be the minimum thickness of it that can be safely used before I run into issues of cracking the Devcon.

Do I use some kind of thread lock on all screws when they are being replaced.

I used pillars that were a couple of mm longer than the depth of the action screw holes to lift the action a little off the stock. I then fitted thepilars. Then with a Dremal I removed some of the stock where the action woulsd normally sit to give a good bed of Devcon. No need for any thread lock on the screws. Just do them up nice and tight. I can't do the job for you, so do as much research as you can.

FEEL the PAIN and Do It ANYWAY

Do a search to find all the info you'll need.

All help appreciated. When you have done it already a lot of the pitfalls can be avoided. Thanks for the information. I will probably put a few pictures up when I get started. Won't be for a couple of months though.

Just a quick reminder. Use plenty of shoe polish, and buff it off. Plenty around the action screw holes, polystyrene, etc.
It's what will stop the Devcon sticking to the metal.

Buff it off. I presume you mean cover the action with it and remove the excess with a cloth.

Any of ye know if the interior of the stock can be made water resistant before I put the epoxy resin on.

The resin will soak in a little and keep any water ingress out.
Then you can give the inside of the stock a lick of varnish to cover any bare wood.
When you see the finished result of the devcon in your stock and against the action, its a mirror finish.

Anyone in Ireland sell Devcon. It is made in Clare. Can't seem to find any Irish stockists.

Not sure if this is the same that they use in US.

JBWELD will do the same job however, its in a putty form and working time is limited.

that is a liquid form of the epoxy and far to runny.

That is the cheapest I've seen it. Add 21% import VAT and it is still good value. I'm still using the same pot I got years ago.

My advice, read up and watch as many YouTube videos as you can until you get the confidence to make a start.
One of the best information websites on bedding and why to only use Devcon.

Still cheap for the best bedding epoxy.
Are 'Address Pal' still taking parcels from the UK?
