The UK Met Office have named Storm Bella now.

An interesting system that will drop down from the Northwest Saturday and bring some very strong winds and heavy rain with risk of snow on high mountains.

Worst of winds look to be West coast and then Southwest coast.

Keep an eye out for Met.ie warnings!

If it's anything like Bella from Fair City we should be safe enough, a lame affair :D

ECM has been fairly consistent over the last few runs, bit stronger on this in W Galway, Mayo, Clare and Kerry all very high end yellow and touching Orange level criteria ( gusting over 110 km/h ), quite strong in Donegal, E Galway and Limerick and W Cork also.

On balance between all the models looks like a high end Yellow along Atlantic coastal counties, more so towards the coast but could get to Orange level or perhaps they will use an Orange Marine Warning to cover the coasts.

Very wet, parts of the country could get around 30 mm in about 12hrs

A deep peace and tranquillity out here.

We need this today of all days; so folk can enjoy Christmas, visit folk and just BE without storm and wind.

And with the prospect of the coming storm to please others!

Seems a perfect Christmas all round!

My cat called Bella has arrived on my shoulder..

    CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS TO ALL!

Very large system with a big Wind field, high end yellow along Atlantic coasts, might just nudge into the Orange wind warning level for a time along the W, SW especially Clare and Kerry, highest gusts on exposed headlands and high ground.

It's not that big a system. That map projection really falsely magnifies it. Look at the size of Iceland...

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,766 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

It doesn't matter what map projection you look at , it is a large system with a large wind field with a lot of associated fronts and troughs. The Met Office Fax chart's shows it well.

The wind out here is wild and strong already. I have just been out to bring fuel in. and it was... interestingly.... gusty.

Dark, deep grey sky to the east, with three dusky - rose horizontal streaks across the skies.

Exhilarating but enough buffeting . I will heed the opinion of my neighbour-islanders. The man I was talking to yesterday is headed for 70 and was born here and sailing these waters since he was six.

Grand day in Dublin so far. Beautiful the last couple of days. Yesterday was the nicest Christmas Day in years, partly cloudy with sunshine and about 3-4 degrees in the afternoon, lovely crisp cold

Storm Bella is smiling at the start, not a good sign :pac:

A wet and windy evening for most but nothing to bad. Looking at the airporr TAFs, none give any gusts above 50 knots.

    Malin head gusting 54 knots (100 km/h) @ 11am

surprised there's no county orange warning anywhere looking at those charts to be honest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 529 ✭✭✭Goldfinch8

Malin Head gusting 57 knots (106 Kms) in the midday reports.
The wind has also started to pick up in the past half hour in this part of Mayo.

ECM and ICON are looking that bit stronger than the other models but the French models are never that far off so would lean towards them. Strongest on the coasts and a good blow across Ireland but not a storm in the true sense, got a feeling Met Eireann wouldn't have named this, being so adamant that the Met Office called it.

Kerry does look that bit strong later tonight in the high end yellow maybe touching Orange level on the coasts for a few hours.

A sudden greater severity out here. Nasty out there so am glad I made preparations.

Ferocious. Seems my neighbour islanders were correct!

Gusts quite strong already...wasn't expecting much with this storm but the strong wind combined with the coldness really makes this different...the windchill makes it feel below freezing out there

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,108 ✭✭✭boombang

Beginning to pick up in Letterkenny. Wasn't that wild earlier today though.

It's not that big a storm, but it's really brought some very dramatically dark skies to the south coast. Could just be the fact it's so short a day, but it feels darker than a typical storm.

The windchill is the most noticeable things about this, other than that it's a standard winter system. jeez to think it was 23 years ago that we had that major storm on this day. Beer by candlelight in the pub that night!
