The suspension test used is absolutely ridiculous & I've heard is going to be changed following a court case. The test doesn't actually test the shock as such,it picks up an imbalance in the total suspension - ball joints,w/bone bushes,shock tops,weak spring etc so sadly it's a matter of going through it all
now with a fine tooth comb.
As an example,had a 407 like that-replaced shocks - failed.replaced springs next-failed. 1mm free play in a shock top swivel bearing,so it's something that irrelevant you're potentially looking for.

True,but joints would want to be unbelievably loose to feel much.Thats as much a wheel bearing check as anything.

Reality is that top shock mounts should be replaced when replacing shocks, worn top shock mounts could and do, cause suspension imbalances.

Our second car is a 2003 runabout, not abused and not huge mileage but tired now and suffering more from being idle as anything else, so at the end of its natural life.

Took it to my favorite independent garage on Tuesday to see what the actual list of issues were and I got

• Brake pads worn all around, front discs needed
• Front brake lines corroded
• Clutch failing
• Oil leak somewhere off the main block
• Three new tyres needed
• Battery mounting corroded, needs replacing
• Underbody corrosion, bad at the rear.
• One window switch and two binnacle bulbs not working
• Blower directional knob not working
• Wipers needed
• Rear window spray broken and dripping into cabin

Mechanic said bring it to the NCT I had booked for last night anyway, see what they actually picked up on.

The bugger was PASSED, with only an advisory on the age of two tyres!!

The NCT is a joke lads.

None of what they told me was wrong, it was still on the lift when I called back for it and he put a flashlight on the underbody. He told me to carry on with the test as they may only pick up on a few points and just repair those, but he did say it depended on which Test Centre, which tester etc. That inconsistency can't be right.
