Always wondered what would happen if one of the aged jazz/blues (or blues/jazz, if you're a Spinal Tap fan) musos karked it in the interval between recording Hootenanny and Dec 31, do they have artists or some extra numbers on standby? What would they do if word came through at 10pm on Dec 31 that they'd snuffed it? "Oh fcuk it we have to edit them out quick!!!"
Couldn't possibly admit on air that it's recorded weeks in advance

Gonna sound like the late Lord Reith here, but TV was better when it had a mission statement to "Inform, Educate and Entertain" - in that order.
Open University late at night and early morning was an amazing idea which really democratized education - people who didn't have money or free time during the day could still achieve higher education and reach their potential. Harold Wilson might have been an aul eejit imho but that initiative stands to him. Kipper ties and black and white Maths 101 lectures and all I'm partial to your abracadabra

And the unemployed or occasionally off sick from primary school could watch Rock School.
