Looking for a smallholding or farm to rent

Hi everyone.

I have been renting a house in Kerry for the last 8 years and have been asked by the landlord to start looking for another place to go as he wants to sell the house next year.

I'm looking for a house on some land where I can have my chickens, rabbits, veg garden and dogs. I've spent the last few years building up a nice veggie patch and have beautiful hens and I'm disheartened about having to pick up and start all over. I'm willing to relocate to just about anywhere so long as I have the freedom to be self sustainable, ie, vegetables and animals.

If anyone knows of a place please let me know. I have good references so I'm trustworthy.

Hi there

Best of luck with move - just a comment but i would suggest that you try to buy something for yourself however small as there is little point in building something up only to have it taken away or given to someone else. If you rent again you will find yourself in the same position at some point in the future.

Sorry to hear about your plight I will keep a look out and pm you if I see anything suitable. Unfortunately in the last 12 months people are after realising the benefits of living out in sticks. I was in Leitrim for a short stay in the summer and there is parts of it as beautiful as any part of Kerry but a lot cheaper and not as touresty as kerry. Have a look up around there you might get something nice.

Thank you for replying. Unfortunately I'm in no position to buy anything. I agree one hundred percent that it is best to buy as one isn't then at the mercy of the whims of a landlord. But I've never had money or a career or a stroke of luck in that department. Still, I count my blessings for what I have and what I've experienced. If you know of any place please keep me in mind.

Thank you for your kind reply. Yes, people are coping on to life in the country and its getting a bit tough to find a place that ticks all the boxes. Unless you have an endless amount of capital! My partners father was from Leitrim and I have driven through there. Thanks very much for keeping an eye out for me. Tis hard times now and harder yet to come. We have to band together. Thanks again.

We all like chickens etc., but most farmers I know are fearful of having dogs roaming around and potentially killing sheep. It happened to me and it was a neighbours dog. The average farmer is simply afraid of complications.

Ireland is a truly mad spot... I'm currently in rural Donegal and the amount of empty & derelict places is startling.

The fact that you are willing to move anywhere means you should be able to find something. By the sounds of it all you need is a house with a large garden. There is plenty of these around the country - although the houses may not be in great shape.

Also I would take pictures of your current garden to show potential landlords that you keep it well. Landlords would be concerned that you want to rip up the garden for veg plots so you need to be able to show that you can maintain it well.

A small farm would be expensive to rent - What is your budget?

Hi Linda

I would suggest parts of county sligo, leitrim and roscommon.
There is a lot of "poor land" located within 5 - 10 miles of many decent towns
like carrick on shannon. Lots of small cottages also - may be in poor condition but I would assume rents would also be very low.

Some of these would not be on daft or myhome but you may find them in other ways of via word of mouth / boards etc...

There are many vacant houses with gardens in the countryside but most of them are in poor shape, hence not rented out. A lot of these houses are damp so be careful of that if you are looking at old houses. They should be dry-lined with no signs of mould or damp. But Ireland is a big enough space and if you are able to consider many locations, including those less popular with tourists, then you should certainly be able to find somewhere suitable and not too expensive (although COVID is keeping the market quiet at present).

If you are considering Leitrim then there is a lady farmer who is a regular poster on here called Lady Haywire who farms in Leitrim and might be able to give you a pointer or two if you message her. Best of luck with your search!

Yeah, not worth it financially and leaving themselves a possible big problem in trying to regain possession when they want the property back.

Also you can't rent out a substandard property even if the tenant is happier to pay less rent for a lower quality of accommodation.

Yea.
Rental market is completely dysfunctional at present.

We have a property rented ourselves and currently to a family member after a terrible tenant. We will likely mothballl it afterwards rather than bring strangers in again.

I know on Instagram my wife follows an auctioneer from the west, maybe Mayo.

She seems to specialise in cheap Irish properties many with a bit of land.

Suggest you look around West Cork
There are old houses & neglected pieces of land as it had a Population decline & hasn't enjoyed the tourist & inward migration that Kerry experienced.

Well! Sorry, not been online here much as the cat broke my laptop.....wet paws on the keyboard....:rolleyes:
New laptop now & it arrived installed in Dutch....so that was a fun fix too.
Ie actually been keeping an eye on this thread & an eye out for anything suitable. Thereś lots of empty places for sure but as to whether owners are actually looking to rent them is a different thing entirely.

linmad, there's a place I know of which was being rented out near me in Leitrim, but folks have moved out to be closer to work. Land was being used for horses, roughly 6 acres, maybe a bit more. I'm going to give the owner a bell to see if he's renting it out again but the issue might be it's quite a large house, 2 story 60s type so I've no idea of what the rent would be.
