3rd place and winning 17 points is......

Audioslave - Like a Stone submitted by
    Necro

I love Cornell and the super band Audioslave are one of my favs. Admittedly it wasnt a track I loved when I first heard it, but man did it grow on me. Now I consider it a top tune.

It feels more Soundgarden than RATM compared to other Audioslave tracks, and Cornells powerful voice carries it well. Love it.

    Its half past 8 mate.

Big sass from someone yet to place..... *changes scoring*

Its a wonderful track, and while the person submitting it doesn't think its the best song ever.... I really love it.

Its a great track and one I was happy to continue playing repeatedly. Love the music, and the vocals really complement it well. Its a really beautiful track and I can see why you like it so much, especially the finale of the track. Big 80's/Blonde vibe off it and a band I shall defo seek out. Fantastic choice.

Bottom of the pile this round and getting 1 point is....

Dermot Kennedy - Giants..... submitted by

Let me state I do not understand this country’s obsession with Dermot Kennedy. He's grand but absolutely nothing special, very cookie cutter. Like he’s grand, but why so many rave about him I just can’t grasp.

That said the track is an easy listen, and I don't hate it, but it's a bit bland for my taste sadly. Soz.

Ah sweet, was fully expecting last. Glad to see the homegrown talent getting due respect here. I was covering my bases earlier when I said its not the best, it is actually one of my faves. Saw her live a couple of years ago. Pure class.

I was pre-empting last place and getting the sass in early. My bad. Carry on, old bean, you're doing great. :D

A great track that my better half introduced me to years ago. A belter of a track, its catchy, gets me nodding my head in approval every time and singing a lot each time. Great vocals and sing-a-long-able lyrics, An underrated gem of a song.

It has that get stuck in your head quality and just gets better with age. Top marks here.

    Mustang shelly - 80 Points

And 12,9,4 and 2 points available, its now clear Shelly and Fixxxer cant win.....

This sounds like a sinister Christmas track or even a cheap rip off of Lord of the Rings. Joking aside, it has nice dirty riffs and the harmonies are very good indeed. The operatic vocals are bold and haunting and they mix well with the sounds. A nice track, but wouldn't class it as best song ever material and it doesnt blow me away on repeated listens.

Collecting 9 points after claiming 11th spot is...

Metallica - Damage, Inc - , submitted by
    Fixxer

Fixxxer goes to the Metallica well once more with a different kind of track.

The opening I have always loved, like a baby being born expecting a nice welcome on the outside, only to be met with chaos.

The fast pace is always something I enjoy and I find it hard to not enjoy it. Overall a great track, that's splendidly enjoyable.

OK, folks in at 8th spot collecting 12 points is...

Phobe Bridgers - I Know The End , submitted by
    ShaneU,

Have I listened to this artist before? No
Have I listened to this song before? No

A lovely ambient beginning with beautifully soft vocals. But its all about the build. The song grows and grows until the amazing finale. Further listens just help me enjoy this track more.

Its a very enjoyable listen and hard not to appreciate. Would have placed higher only for the competition above it.

and..... collecting 2 points at 18th spot,

Paul Brady - Lakes of Pontchartrain submitted by
    Phatkev

Have I listened to this artist before? No
Have I listened to this song before? No

I have work mate called Paul Brady, but that's as close I come to knowing the artist. A big change from your last entry, so its a surprise. Its a very easy listen, but truthfully its not typically my cuppa.

Its nice piece for what its worth, it brings thoughts of lying on my back in a green grassy field on a day of doing sweet FA. Vocals are lovely and compliment the music very well. I wasnt mad on repeated listens though.

While I can appreciate its place in the world of music, I cant have it on my playlists. Sorry Kev.

That means our overall winner with 108.5 points is.......

Well done Shane, nice to get the W fo sho ;)

Jolly good show beaker, I'll take my 4th from bottom after a dismal early showing :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,636 ✭✭✭phatkev

Ah well, cant win win them all and it will remain a firm favourite of mine. I think this was the actual version I sent you (still dont think it would have scored any better), same song/artist but with the addition of Andy Irvine who would be one of my music idols. I've always been fascinated with how the two of them managed to make such a complex song sound so simple

Thank you for organising beakerjoe. 8 categories was definitely a lot of effort for you, and it was really enjoyable!!

I can easily say I took on too much. Lessons have been learned.

While I would do 8 catogories again, I will give myself more time to listen. I felt I delayed the game waaay too much for my liking compared to others. How Necro did 3 categories excellently in less than 24 hours is beyond me

I was thinking me, lets say 10 or 12 players.

Each player submits a song I dont know and havent heard before.

I listen to all songs live in 1 take and score them after each song based on a set criteria. Out of 10 Eg, singalongness, lyrics, vocals, instumentals etc

    Its a rough idea

Grazie Beakerjoe, glad you liked some of my submissions. My highest finish in a Walrus. Congratulations on victory, ShaneU.
